Killer Heart: A M/M Enemies-to-lovers Urban Fantasy Romance (Cursed Hearts Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 542 ratings

Raised to hate them. Trained to kill them.

Witches are evil. They’re everything that’s wrong with this world. My unit is tasked with finding and killing each and every one of them.

Until he comes along. Caleb Carlyle.

My next target.

Silver hair, small with a big-boy attitude, and an offer I can’t refuse. Trade my cursed, frozen heart for his broken one.

When we join forces, witches and hunters turn against us. Now we have to rely on each other for survival and I know this won’t end well.

Rule number one of witch-hunting? Never trust a witch.

Even when he comes in such a gorgeous package.

Yet his honesty surprises me every step of the way.

Is it all a lie? Or are there darker forces at play here? And if witches aren’t evil, who is?

Killer Heart is the first book in a gay urban fantasy romance series.
It’s filled to the brim with magic, heart-pumping action, and steamy times.
Book 1 contains
enemies-to-lovers and bi-awakening and ends on a HFN minor cliffhanger.

Read now and immerse yourself in the curse of a lifetime.

First in series (Cursed Hearts). Paranormal. Enemies to lovers. Dual POV. Wade’s whole existence revolves around killing witches, he can’t have any type of relationship as he’s been cursed not to love, so his only focus is doing his job. When empath witch Caleb proposes that he and Wade work together to find out who might be betraying both witches and hunters Wade agrees if it means he might be able to end his curse. Thus starts an adventure that includes a varied world build with many types of supernatural beings, a ton of secondary characters, some evil some not, and a deep dive into Caleb and Wade’s attraction and the repercussions of them exploring something more. There is quite a bit of information as this is the start to a series, and a lot of twists and turns to the story as many hidden truths are exposed. Entertaining and definitely intrigued to see where the series goes. HFN as the story has a soft cliffhanger as the series continues.

I had read the prequel novella and fell in love with the world so was super excited to read this one and it did not disappoint. I’m a huge fan of magical stories, and the world Lawless built here was beautiful and intriguing. I thought I was going to hate Wade in the beginning but honestly, I loved him and all his brokenness. I also usually hate enemies to lovers, because it seems to be hate sex then straight to love, but here you got to actually see them fall in love and the progression made sense. If you’re a fan of enemies to lovers, Magic, witches, gay/bi for you, broken men figuring themselves out, and more twists than a roller coaster, this is the story for you. I might die waiting for the next one!

I'm sure this is a lovely book for someone else, but I found Wade and Caleb tedious. They are intentionally vague with everything and while it serves their purpose because they do not trust each other, it does not help the reader.

The plot drags because so much time is spent inner monologing in the middle of action, and even more time repeatedly second guessing each others motives. There are continuity issues within the story at 48% and frankly I had to stop after that, because I could not see myself devoting any more time to this.

I do like the idea behind it, and if one could be beyond the very few spelling and grammar issues I found then, it might easily be a four or five star book. Best of luck to the reader and the author.

I rounded this up because I liked the characters, and the prequel novella, but I do have some issues with this book.

The magic system is really inconsistent and seemingly cumbersome as its described in the book. It seems to be that each witch has an innate power, that's what makes them witches. In order to access this power, they have to be kindled by another witch. If they want to use magic outside of their innate ability, they need to have access to spells that are bundled inside small gems. Going by the explanation in the book, witches are simply a magical version of Pokemon.

But, if this is the case, why don't the witches put a greater focus on developing their innate skills as both offensive and defensive weapons rather than simply relying on the prepackaged spells? Surely, with work and ingenuity, an empath can figure out some effective combat uses.

I felt that the memory bit was awkward. Having read the prequel, I was confused about Caleb's lack of familiarity with Mother Red Hat and even Wade's name. I think that this would have been less jarring if we had mauve started the book out with Caleb first waking up with no memory and having things explained by Graham, then jump forward 5 years. This would give the reader a reference, but also help the reader sympathize with Caleb's feelings of betrayal.

This was a fantastic urban story! Enemy to lover. Wade is a witch hunter in the Blade Force. He’s believes that witches are evil and must be put down. But he meets Caleb a witch who is powerful in his own right. This story had so may twists and turns, but ohh my, so freakin good!! I couldn’t put it down! It does leave us with a HFN. I’m voluntarily reviewing from an advanced copy that I received.

Where do I start? I found this book when I was searching for a M/M romance involving a male witch. A story about a witch and witch hunter with a bisexual awakening really appealed to me. This story transported me into another world I was happy to escape to. At first I wasn’t sure how I felt about the way spells work in this book. I decided it was creative and then when it was tied in with the Tower of London and a raven, I absolutely loved it. Wade and Caleb in the wine cellar put me on an amazing high. A part of the story did pull me out of that world and I found myself just reading words on paper. I feel Wade was made to do too many things when he was badly wounded to move the story forward. I think Hew could have magically helped him to make everything he ended up doing more believable. I love ravens and England. Rhys did pull me back into that world and I will read on. Rhys promised thirteen familiars (shape shifters for witches) will arrive on my doorstep for a chance on mating for life if I leave an Amazon review. I believe him. I am hopeful again.

This book kept me hanging to the edge of my seat, never a dull moment! Witches, witch hunters, phoenixes, trolls and so much more inhabit the London of Killer Heart. I loved following Caleb and Wade around one of my favourite cities.
I loved the characters. They start as natural enemies with what seems to be an unexplainable attraction to each other; but, as layer upon layer of lies, spells and half truths is peeled back, their true selves are revealed and them being together is not unexplainable anymore!
Very good performance by the narrator, captivating and on spot with the different characters!

This was a great start to what promises to be an interesting and entertaining series. I loved the worldbuilding and how the witches created and used magical spells - so unique without being overly complex.

The storyline was intriguing and I loved the little twists that occured throughout - some of them I definitely didn't see coming, yet they worked so well with the overall story.

The characters I couldnt help but love. We get the story told from both Caleb and Wade's perspectives which really added to their development and depth. I loved how their relationship evolved, and the chemistry between them was palpable.

I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series, and keen to explore more by this author as well. Definitely a book I would recommend if you like a bit of fantasy with your MM romance.

Having read other books and stories by this amazing author I can tell you be is not one to sit nice and sAfe within the same genre churning out the handbooks over and over. Not many would choose to do an urban fantasy after his fantastic Greek novels , whodunit of his amazing fairytale updates.or write something with such gorgeous characters and impeccable worldbuilding. A brilliant read and I can't wait to read the second book. 5/5

It took me a while to warm to the authors writing style and even longer to warm up to Wade, however it was worth it all in the end. Lots of revelations in the last quarter and everything is set up nicely for book 2. A great read
