Extraordinary Things (Star Shadow #4) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 109 ratings

Leo and Caleb have been through hell—addiction, destruction, and even a five year separation—but they’ve come through on the other side with their love stronger than ever.

Caleb knows he’s earned Leo’s forgiveness. He wants to believe he deserves it, but just when Leo needs him more than ever, a voice in his head insists that maybe he doesn't. It’s so loud, he can't block it out. So loud, he’d do anything to silence it.

Including risking everything he and Leo, and the rest of Star Shadow, have built together.

Extraordinary Things is a continuation of Leo and Caleb's love story from Terrible Things. It should not be read as a standalone.

This is a streaming tale that leaves us on the ocean shore. It’s a fitting culmination of a journey of emotional travail. We, like our heroes, have come out better for it.

Continuing Leo and Caleb's love story from Caleb's POV was a nice way to bookend the series.

It was interesting to get inside Caleb's head and get their relationship from his perspective. It's what was needed and allowed me to get a better idea of who this character is.

Extraordinary Things is satisfying note on which to end the Star Shadow series.

Extraordinary Things is the Star Shadow book I didn't think I wanted, but after reading it, it turned out to be exactly what I needed. I was wary over the idea of Caleb and Leo requiring a second book, but while they may have seemed happy enough, certain things in the third book clued me in that maybe there were issues that still required resolution. It's easy to say you forgive someone, but truly letting go of all the hurt and resentment and getting to the point of trusting the other person is a whole 'nother matter. There's also the notion of forgiving yourself and dealing with feelings of guilt and inadequacy. There was no denying how much Caleb loved Leo and vice-versa, but these two still had to contend with certain hurdles that could complicate both their personal and professional partnership. The angst was ever-present (yay!), the romance still swoony (yay!), and the tension palpable once again (yay!). Beth Bolden has ended this series of hers on as high a note as she began it. My suggestion? Read the whole series in order, but if four books sounds daunting, the first book followed by the fourth one may give you enough of an appreciation of how far Caleb and Leo have come, proving that even from the most terrible of things, the most extraordinary of outcomes can still prevail. Five stars.

Leo had forgiven Caleb for leaving him, imploding the band when he left. Star Shadow had come out the other side, bigger and better than ever.

Caleb had never forgiven himself for hurting Leo. The doubts piling around him, making him doubt himself.

Leo was the fire that drove Caleb. His reason for breathing.
Leo felt the same. “The pain is a reminder that joy exists”.

This was a nice ending to the Star Shadow story. Well written. Even though it was Caleb’s story it showed a lot of insight to Leo’s thoughts. I think this series is my favorite of the author’s work.

Caleb and Leo, the OG Star Shadow couple, are back again with a continuation of their lives after a second chance at massive success. Everyone is paired off and living their HEAs. Caleb and Leo head off to Fiji for a vacation. Well, a working vacation for Caleb. He's recording a solo album!

I loved getting a view of Caleb's thoughts, feelings, and struggles In Extraordinary Things. He's still carrying his baggage from his addiction and the damage he caused to his personal and professional relationships.

He was just a mediocre bass player in an ex-boyband, an addict who'd never truly recovered.

My heart was broken and mended and ripped apart again...just to be put right back together again. Caleb is the hardest on himself out of anyone in his circle. Some of the damage is still there, lurking in the background; but, for the most part, the boys in the band have forgiven him and have moved on.

Some of the best parts are the Interludes where the reader gets Caleb's POV of scenes from Terrible Things.

Bolden creates perfect harmony in writing Caleb's process of recording his solo album and his working through his remaining issues. These two things went hand and hand, making Caleb and Leo, and Caleb and his bandmates, stronger in the end.

Extraordinary Things was a lovely send-off for Caleb and Leo, and Star Shadow.

“The simple things are also the most extraordinary things, and only the wise can see them.” ~ Paulo Coelho

Although Leo and Caleb, of ‘Extraordinary Things’ by Beth Bolden, are back together, they have a long way to go before they are on an even keel. In some ways, things are wonderful. They are surer than ever that they are meant to be together, but are so busy being happy that they are afraid to rock the boat by bringing up issues that they need to confront. If Leo and Caleb continue to tiptoe around issues they have been trying to ignore, it may fall apart all over again; this time... forever.

It’s taken Leo and Caleb two years to get to the point that they are able to try again, to overcome the hurt feelings and begin to build trust again. Leo has forgiven Caleb and sincerely wants to work on their relationship. Caleb does as well, but he is haunted by his past and terrified that Leo will change his mind and leave him. In this case, he is his own worst enemy. Leo may have forgiven Caleb, but the problem is, Caleb hasn’t forgiven himself. His lack of self-worth and doubt color their relationship, affecting it negatively by standing between them and making any real progress. Caleb simply doesn’t know how to proceed.

When Caleb is offered an opportunity to cut his own album, Leo goes along, even though it is supposed to be their vacation. Leo is frustrated with Caleb. He has tried his best to show Caleb that he has forgiven him and wants to be with him for the rest of his life but wonders if that’s what Caleb wants. Leo doesn’t know how long he can stand the tension between them. With Caleb spending so much time recording, taking away from their time together, he gets even more frustrated. When Leo’s mother falls and breaks her hip, Leo needs to leave immediately, strikes out at Caleb, telling him he doesn’t want Caleb to come home with him. Instead of telling Leo that there is no way he is going to let Leo go without him, Caleb shrinks from the confrontation. His old fears of abandonment and insecurity raise their ugly heads and freeze him into indecision. Caleb lets Leo leave alone, thinking that his worst fears are coming to fruition, that Leo doesn’t need him after all.

The feelings between Leo and Caleb are so intense that they took my breath away. It also reminded me that, like many others, I can be my own worst enemy. Communication is one of the most important elements of a relationship and things aren’t always going to be easy, fair, or comfortable, but it’s the uncomfortable discussions that enrich a relationship and make it grow more secure and fulfilling than it was beforehand. An important element in Caleb’s recovery is self-forgiveness. Without it, he and Leo would never have had a chance. It’s a lesson everyone should be mindful of. Thanks, Beth, for giving Leo and Caleb their opportunity to have their happy ever after.
