Once upon a time, there was a stunningly gorgeous mage named Nikki.

They were trapped by evil, horrible Jaeggi mages for ten long years until they were rescued by the brave dragon named Gunter.

The grumpy red knight swept in, carrying them off to a fair castle, where they lived happily ever after.

That’s how the story’s supposed to go, anyway. Nikki would really like to have that fairytale ending, please and thank you.

It’s too bad Gunter is oblivious and the Jaeggi are interfering. Nikki may just have to cook up some explosions to help both situations along, because they’re determined to get their happily ever after.

Is there a magic how-to guide on things that go boom?

Nikki is non-binary and prefers they/them pronouns. There may be a bit of confusion when reading to separate Nikki's pronouns at first, but it's really not a hurdle. If you're incapable of dealing with that, then step off now.

    That being said...

This book is long. Justifiably long. Not only is Gunter and Nikki's love story told, but also Nikki's rescue, and the culmination of the series - the vanquish of the Jaeggi. While I have read the other 3.5 books in the series, it has been a while. So, the prologue covering the rescue of Ravi which gained Nikki's freedom, along with others, was a nice to have. The book stands alone, though, enjoyment of the book and a bit more of the worldview would be assisted by reading the others.

The story itself was wonderful. Gunter, the clan's historian is grumpy and has longed for his mate for 500 years since the Dragon War. Nikki, a rescued, untrained, untrusting mage comes along and seems to be the one person Gunter can deal with having in his library (so called dungeon). Nikki finds Gunter soothing, safe, calm, and smoking hot. From the first sight Nikki has of Gunter on the battlefield, they know Gunter is their mate, their one and only. They can't wait to be taken in Gunter's arms... so what is taking Gunter so. Darn. Long?!?!

This is a wonderful book, and I love the hope we're left with in the end. But, I'm wondering if there wouldn't be some followup, with the way several openings were left. After all, the other Dragon clans found no mates... and all the ends created in this book aren't _really_ tied up... so, maybe? hopefully, there might be more...

Edited 9/17/21 - Just from the author's newsletter:
"Starting in early 2022, we will begin working on a spin-off series that focuses on the Valerii Clan (the ice dragons of Brazil).

I don't have many details to share just yet. We haven't figured out much - not even titles of the books or the new series. I do believe we will be seeing more of Dimitri (from Embers). I also think we're aiming to keep this series at three books, but all things are naturally subject to change.

We will have more details about the Valerii in the spring of 2022."
So, YAY! More dragons to come!

As sad as I am to see the last book in this series, I am also stoked! And what a way to end a series with a bang! I want my very own dragon. I might be a mage. Wonder if I could make my way to Germany for mage testing? Oh my gosh I love these books! We met Nikki at the end of Blood and knew they were going to rock Gunter’s world in all of the best ways. They are terrified of the Burkhard mages at first, but the love and kindness eventually wears them down. Having a sexy and lovable dragon to guard them and stay with them certainly doesn’t hurt. And Gunter finally has a reason to venture forth from his library dungeon. This book sees the final battle to take down the monstrous Jaeggi once and for all. This book has its hilarious moments (drunk dragons!) and its sweet tender moments as Gunter helps Nikki work through their trams and find a place of their very own among the clan. A truly amazing book. This entire series is going to be comfort rereads for me. I can tell you that already. I can’t wait for the follow up series.

A Smoldering Finale to the Scales n’ Spells series in Embers by AJ Sherwood and Jocelynn Drake. Embers finally gives us the story of the grumpy dragon we have all come to love in Gunter and his mate Nikki. When Nikki escapes from the Jaeggi who have been holding him hostage for power since he was a child, he’s thrown into Gunter's arms for safekeeping. Nikki feels an instant connection for the dragon, but I loved how Gunter was totally oblivious to what was going on between the two in their early stages. Nikki claims Gunter long before Gunter realizes what Nikki really is to him. Gunter and Nikki work thru their individual insecurities to form a strong mate bond. We are brought to the conclusion of the long fought battle between the Jaeggi and the dragons, bringing all of our favorite dragons and mages back together to the Grand Conclusion to the story. I loved this entire series, and how the author’s brought us so many different characters, all with their own twist on relationships and what it takes to make them work. I hope that they continue to bring us stories of Dragons and Mages from the other clans so that we are able to get updates on our favorite characters and the children from these fantastic pairings!

This has been a great series and I'm a little sad to see it end but it definitely ended on a bang. In this book, the scene with Gunther and Alric drunk shifting was pure gold. I laughed so hard I was crying. I was also very glad that Ravi was prominently featured in the book. He was always my favorite. The final scene between the dragons and the Jaeggi was enthralling and satisfying. To be honest, though, I was a little uncomfortable with Nikki's pronouns in that sometimes when they were used I was confused as to whether it was about a group or just Nikki. I had to go back and reread portions several times. However, that was my problem and really did not detract from the overall story. Also, I would have liked to know what happened with Lina and her family and the others rescued from the Jaeggi. Again, not a detraction and, in my opinion, this was very well written.

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as I expected, loved it! 😊

The final book in the Scales 'N' Spells series, it's a wonderful finale to a series I absolutely love 😊

I love Nikki, such a bright, energetic, mischievous and creative character, but understandably has a lot of issues. Gunter is so caring, patient and loving as Nikki works through their issues.

All the dragons and mages are there, working towards achieving their goal of defeating the evil Jaeggi clan 😊 I would recommend reading the series in order, to understand who all the characters are, and how they relate to each other (and because I think they're great, fun stories!) 😀

5.0 out of 5 stars Gelungener Abschluss
Reviewed in Germany on December 20, 2021

Read the whole series in a week, it's addictive! And I totally LOVED each and and every couple introduced. I wish there would be another book just to see the turbulences of parenthood in the clan. No doubt I'll re-read this series, it has it all: action, romance, mages and dragons!
