Two-Man Team (Stick Side Book 5) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 420 ratings

One wrongful arrest ruined Kris Xappa’s image—and made his NHL team look bad. Now, with orders to keep his head down, the last thing he needs is to develop feelings for his younger teammate—and best friend’s brother. The fact that he can’t stop thinking about their one illicit kiss doesn’t mean anything.

Rory Stanton is perfectly capable of taking care of himself and doesn’t need his brother’s best friend keeping an eye on him. Sure, he likes having Kris’s attention, but he’d rather have it for entirely different reasons. Too bad that one kiss they shared wasn’t enough to convince Kris to take a chance on him.

When an injury lands Rory in Kris’s care, will these teammates be able to see past the obstacles to become a two-man team?

Amy's lived with her head in the clouds since she first picked up a book as a child, and being fluent in two languages means she's read a lot of books! She first picked up a pen on a rainy day in fourth grade when her class had to stay inside for recess. Tales of treasure hunts with her classmates eventually morphed into love stories between men, and she's been writing ever since. She writes evenings and weekends—or whenever she isn't at her full-time day job saving the planet at Canada's largest environmental non-profit.

An unapologetic introvert, Amy reads too much and socializes too little, with no regrets. She loves connecting with readers. Join her Facebook Group to stay up-to-date on upcoming releases and for access to early teasers, find her on Instagram and Twitter, or sign up for her infrequent newsletter.

Two-Man Team is a great addition to Amy Aislin’s Stick Side series. While the book is a stand-alone, I think it is enhanced by having read beforehand a couple books of the series, namely On the Ice (Mitch and Alex’s story) and Risking the Shot (Tay and Dakota’s story). Most, if not all, of Aislin’s books are at least peripherally interconnected and I really enjoy the universe-building that she has done and continues to do in Two-Man Team.

As is true of her other characters, both Kris and Rory are very likable guys. Despite being semi-celebrity millionaire hockey players, they are very down to earth. Aislin’s main characters are multi-dimensional; she is quite skilled at letting the reader in to see and understand her characters’ motivations and feelings. By extension, the progression of Kris and Rory's feelings for one another seems natural, which contributes to the sweetness of their love story.

If you’re looking for a sweet low-angst feel-good love story, you’ll enjoy spending some quality time with Kris and Rory.

*I received an ARC of the book and am leaving a review voluntarily.

Two-Man Team by Amy Aislin is the fifth book in the Stick Side series. Kris Xappa has found himself at the tail end of bad press after trying to help de-escalate a fight at a friend’s bar. He is now trying to keep his head down and finish out his final season without being labeled a troublemaker. He finds himself being tasked with caring for his best friend’s younger brother and teammate, Rory Stanton, after he breaks his leg. After a precarious drunken kiss, Rory finds it hard to ignore the growing affection he feels towards Kris as he cares for his safety and well-being while he heals. Kris is not “out” so the closer they get the harder it is to hide the secret of their ever strengthening relationship. But news finds its way of getting it out and Rory and Kris must decide where their futures lead.

Kris Xappa is a good guy wrapped in a bad boy exterior. He regularly volunteers with organizations he has founded and is working on a non-profit to run after retiring. He has always known Rory through and recalls the struggles Rory faced with bullying in his younger years. Once Kris allows himself to open up his protective heart to the now adult Rory, he finds himself drawn to the sunshine and positivity that Rory brings to everything. Their compatibility and chemistry translates to high heat bedroom scenes and warm and fuzzy moments in between.

Rory Stanton is such a sweet man who only finds himself hurt when helping an elderly neighbor decorate. He hesitates to have Kris watch over him while he recuperates because he knows he has feelings for Kris and doesn’t think there’s any chance of them being reciprocated. Rory can take care of himself and has worked through his childhood struggles with bullying but watching him lean into the care and comfort Kris provides was so sweet. Rory can’t put his past completely behind him and is shocked as his new found family of teammates fully embrace his creativity when it comes to painting wooden trains. Rory brought so many smiles to my face while reading because his charm was palpable.

Amy Aislin’s hockey world is one of those familiar places that just feel so good to go back to. Toronto’s team is filled with familiar faces from previous books that provide support to these MCs as they work their way through their careers as professional hockey players as well as their relationship. This book would be considered low angst from an action perspective but had plenty of emotional moments where you felt for both Kris and Rory.

4 stars for Rory and Kris finding comfort and love with a side of snuggles and waffles.

This is one of my favorite books in this series! I mean all of them are fantastic, but this one got to me in a different way then the others did. I loved everything about this one and I just wanted to live between its pages. One of the things that I really loved about this one was that we got a pansexual main character! And really in general, this series has been one of the best for having a huge variety of lgbtq+ characters. Especially the ones that don’t have a lot of representation.

Kris was so lovely throughout this whole book even with all the stuff that got piled on him. I hated every time someone posted something about him that was out of context or just a straight up lie or when he was outed by the media. I’m just glad he had Rory to lean on. And Rory was a literal ray of sunshine! Even after breaking his leg in the dumbest way possible. He deserves all the waffles and cuddle he could ever want. I loved that he was able to lean on Kris when he was hurting. I also really liked that we got to explore Rory’s childhood memories, both good (his big brother’s best friend {Kris} standing up for him, painting miniature trains, hockey) and the bad (bullying to the point of having to move schools). I also loved that we got to see Kris building his charity and all the struggles that came with it.

This book was just lovely. I swear, each book in this series is better than the next. And I can’t wait to see what else is in store for this series. Two-Man Team is getting five stars from me! 😊

This pairing is the sweetest ever.
Kris is just a huge teddy bear and the struggle when he realizes he is into his best friend's little brother is real. It's so cute and fun to watch his infatuation unraveling.
Rory on the other side is already catching feelings and the only way to go is towards Kris.
It is really delightful to see how Rory tries to show Kris how he feels, but the huge teddy bear is hilariously ignorant.
Add a hockey team to the mix and Rory's older brother and this story gets really fun.

The flirting from Rory needs some work, he’s been hiding his feelings for Kris for awhile. When injured he realizes his little crush isn’t going anywhere and it may not be just one sided. Kris takes care of an injured Rory and realizes he’s not just that shy, once bullied kid he used to be. Together they face Kris’s obstacles that keep coming up and Kris helps Rory find confidence in himself. Another good story in the series. I’d love to see the story of the bartender and the hockey player in an upcoming book. ;)

It has been a great wet winter exercise to start at no. 1 and read the series in the right order this time. This is the second hockey series that I have done. It's great because you remember the characters and the basic story line but the details still feel great to refresh.

4.0 out of 5 stars Une histoire pleine de tendresse et de douceur

    3.5 *

4.0 out of 5 stars Great character-driven series with some hockey 🏒 thrown in...

4.25 stars from me. I've really enjoyed this character-driven series from Amy Aislin, although touting the series as a hockey one is a teeny, tiny bit of a stretch tbh...there really isn't that much hockey in any of the stories I've read [and that's all of them 😉].

Understand that Emery and Felix will get a story down the line and a little novella for Darragh and Mac, but happy that Rory had his own HEA as he's a great character. Kris is pansexual, and maybe that's a first for me 🤔.
