Sophie : A Sweet Historical Romance (Orphan Train Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 224 ratings

She’d happily give him her heart - if only it wouldn’t cost her the only home she’s known

Sophie Brooks thought she had everything she could want in life. Friends, loved ones at the orphanage where she was raised, a job that gives her purpose, and a chance to help children every day … what more could she need? But a chance encounter with a handsome stranger has her wondering if a life—and love—outside the orphanage might be exactly what she never knew she needed.

Renton Robert Rexford III has never wanted for anything. Until he meets Sophie. The charming, intelligent beauty draws him like no other. But, thanks to a disapproving benefactor who threatens to pull the orphanage’s funding, his pursuit of her could cost Sophie everything she holds dear. She’s all he wants in the world, but how can he ask her to give up so much when all she’d get in return is his heart?

It’s not long before Sophie is forced to weigh her loyalty to the only home she’s ever known against the needs of her heart. Can love prevail—or is the cost simply too high?

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Wendy learned to read when she was four years old, listening to her mother read great stories to alleviate her loneliness when her big brother started school. Ever since, she’s had her head buried in a book. Wendy loves words - historical plaques, signs, the cereal box - but her first love has always been novels, especially of the historical variety.

About fifteen years ago, Wendy’s husband dared her to write a book instead of reading them all the time. While she didn’t think she could do it, she gave it a shot. To her shock, it grew into her new favorite pastime. It started out as a hobby and has become her full-time career.

Wendy believes firmly that everyone deserves a happily ever after. She creates worlds for her readers to escape the everyday for a little while, leaving them feeling upbeat and refreshed when they come out the other side.

When not reading or writing, Wendy can be found traveling the world with her husband, the best adventure companion. Follow those adventures on Facebook or Instagram or join her newsletter on her website wendymayandrews dot com

This tale of a wealthy man and a poor orphan lady is a sweet fairytale. It's clean and includes a few interesting facts about some of the story elements at the end. I appreciated both those things. Since it's a novella, it's also short. So if you're looking for a sweet, short, clean, historical romance, then you should try this one.

Setting: Spring 1854, New York City

This was a very sweet and tender historical romance that although short, was still a joy to read. It's also clean with only a couple of chaste kisses making it appropriate for teens too. That being said this was an emotional read that deals with young orphans, so it not only pulled at my heartstrings but even brought tears to my eyes and a smile to my lips on more than one occasion.

As for Sophie and Renton, I loved them both. Yes they could have used more development, but for such a brief tale the author did pretty well nonetheless. And since the entire story takes place in a matter of days, I appreciated the flashbacks four months earlier showing us how this couple met. In the end it was really a beautiful little love story and a wonderful way to pass an hour 😊

Heroine: Miss Sophronia Brooks (Age: 19)
Hero: Mr. Renton Robert Rexford the Third (Age: Unknown)
Length: The kindle edition ended at the 93% mark on page 48 and location 705.

A great book about an Orphan nd a man she meets but is not allowed to take serious. The characters were entertaining as they were living in the town. A must read for those who enjoy historical western romance kindle books from Amazon at a special price and from a delightful author who keeps me wondering what next.

A really sweet romance from another time. A grown orphan is falling in love but she works at the orphanage where she grew up. A nice short story that I read during commercials in the movie I was watching!

A fun an interesting launch for a series that brings diverse characters on stage, based on actual events. Sophie is well-drawn as a caring, strong protagonist and clearly enchants Mr. Rexford.

Sophie and Renton's story is a good start to the series. I liked the fact that he didn't give up on their relationship, even when she tried pushing him away. Sophie has a big heart, and her compassion shines through to the orphans in her care. This is a sweet and enjoyable read.
