Swimmer meets drag queen romance is MM gold!

An Olympic hopeful college competitive swimmer and a drag queen… Having read the previous three Midwest series books, this one at face value seemed like a strange pairing, both for a story and for this series, but I was here for every aspect of this unlikely romance, and enjoyed it as much as the other books in the series, and that is a lot. Swimmer Ian has suffered a lot of loss in his young life, and the connection he makes with Ricky/Rosie after a drag performance is unexpected and powerful. Missteps and external forces challenge their viability as a couple, however, and it is anything but smooth sailing for them. I found compelling their mutual vulnerability as they strove to achieve the trust required to sustain their love, and the uniqueness of the drag component in their relationship. One of my favorite tropes is found family, and this story benefits from the strong presence of the three established couples from the previous Midwest books. LGBTQ+ characters supporting and loving each other through life’s ups and downs, functioning as a surrogate family that complements or replaces actual blood family is an essential message of positivity and community. Ricky and Ian are one of those couples that stay with you long after the reading/listening has concluded, and I don’t mind that one bit.

I did enjoy this story but parts of it were hard to read. Some of the flashbacks felt awkward it’s the way they were stuck in there. The dates being out at the beginning of each chapter make you think everything is set during one time during the story but it really isn’t. It made those parts kind of difficult to figure out. I loved everything about Ricky. He is fabulous, both as himself and as Rosie. Ian just had to get his head out of somewhere dark and see how toxic his swim coach really was. He also had to wake up and realize that everything wasn’t about him, not that he was too terribly arrogant to begin with thanks to the personal losses he had suffered in his life. But he does have privilege and he knows it. I love the other drag queens and their friends too. The audiobook of this was ok. Again the story was good but I didn’t really care for the narrator. His voice kinda put me to sleep.

Brigham Vaughn delivers a compelling end of one of the best M/M sports romance series I’ve read. Everything about this book calls to me. The author delves deeply into emotions and it is the kind of read that is impossible to put down.

The characters are amazing. I’ve never read a book anything like this with Ricky and Rosie. I love how the author made it clear both were vital. Then Ian stole my heart from the very first moment. I’m a huge swimming fan and Brigham Vaughn did an excellent job there. The relationship between the two characters tore at my heart and even demanded Kleenex at times. Not only that but the author truly added depth to each of them individually. Their stories touched my heart. The world-building was flawless and vivid.

The storyline is captivating. It wasn’t predictable and I love the author’s ability to weave such a tale. This is the type of love story I want to read, where the characters are so realistic and nothing is taken for granted. While it can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend the entire series. I enjoyed every cameo in this and I’m already waiting for whatever the author publishes next!

ADVANCE AND RETREAT is book 4 in the "Midwest Series" and this is my favorite couple. Ricky has been a thread in the previous books and I have liked him from the beginning. Rosie and Ricky and I would totally be friends IRL.

What I loved about this book in particular is that it had a realness about it. I think because of a few of the secondary characters are a little older there was a different depth to this story (Irving, I'm talking about you!!! I want to read his story too)

While this is book 4 in a series, it can ABSOLUTELY be read as a stand-alone. You will not feel left out or feel like you are missing anything.

I've been waiting for the bittersweet ending to this series and I was not disappointed.
Ian and Rosie/Ricky were so sweet and tender together.
Both have bern tremendously hurt in the past and both had some growing to do in order to be the best version of themselves and for each other.
Honestly, I wanted to knock them around a bit at times.
There's just such a multifaceted depth to the author's characters that makes them so realistic and relatable that you tend to immerse yourself in their world and they almost become friends you could imagine in your life.
A beautiful story about being yourself no matter the cost and recognizing your own self-worth.
