Absorbing

This is the best book in the series so far. I wanted to read it in one sitting but did it in three . Everything from the election through murder and loss and towards the neat ending kept me glued to my seat. It is always soothing to realize that amidst all the turmoil people go through, friends are there to care and help. This is what Spice town conveys all the time. If only there is such a place wouldn't the world be a better place.

All Spicetown series of cozy mysteries

I enjoy all of the Spicetown mysteries as they are easy to read and the delightful characters are engaging. It is good to be able to read a book that comforts your mind that there is a town where most of its residents get along especially the mayor with almost every citizen. I recently lost my husband and this writer connects to losing a spouse and the painful aftermath.

So good

I love the spice town mystery books. I think I know who done it. But no I'm wrong. Just so well done. Will Conrad and Cora become a item? I feel like I'm right there with them trying to figure who's the bad guy or woman is. Keep up the good work. Can't wait for the next one.

book 7 is great

I can’t believe there is only 8 books in this series. I just finished 7 and I really like the characters. I am hoping Amanda and Bryan get engaged, maybe even the mayor! I hope there will be more books.

Love Spicetown

The characters are wonderful. I would like a mayor like Cora Mae in my town. I haven’t read these in order but it doesn’t matter. Each plot is self contained.

This book opens as Saucy arrives at the police station, he notices that Chief Conrad has a new hire, Gwen Kimball and is pleased that he hired a woman. The main reason he's here though is to report the theft of election signs. All down Dill Weed Drive the signs for Hobart Emory were taken and replaced with ones for his opponent the incumbent Larry Langley. This is very upsetting to the community, and they want something done about it.

In the meantime, Larry Langley believes he has information to prevent Hobart from running. Larry believes Hobart is still receiving money from the city contract with the quarry even though he sold it years ago. Cora tells him he can bring it up at the meeting but advises against it since it would put a negative cast on his own campaign.

Larry Langley has been a bit volatile lately and simple conversations have escalated into screaming matches. This is not a good look for a councilman.

Then we have Miriam sending out notices of a meeting about starting a homeowner's association. She had promised not to get involved with her subdivision that way and it looks like she may have changed her mind. Nobody wants Miriam calling the shots for them.

Dorothy is setting up a meeting for a merchant association. She needs ideas of what the merchants would want from the association, what they can provide that will be beneficial to them.

At the debate between Hobart Emory and Larry Langley, Larry loses control of his temper. Cora and Conrad take over the scene and Cora gets Larry out of the way while Conrad helps Hobart and his wife leave.

We see Hobart as he's speaking with his farm manager Ted. He's not happy about equipment being left out. Hobart's new hire Mickey seems to be the one to blame and Ted recommends firing him and rehiring Kevin his nephew. Hobart just wants things done quickly and correctly.

As Conrad is checking on the truck that was seen on video of the person taking the election signs, he gets a call from the Sheriff's office. A body has been found at the lake and is identified as Hobart Emory.

He and Gwen update the Mayor and the Sheriff's office has handled the notification to Hobart's wife, Arlene.

There are many things to be considered in the case. The farm, the election, the quarry and what it all means for Arlene.

Some very interesting facts come to light, including some informative election laws. There are definitely some twists that I didn't see coming and the reason for the disappearing signs was unexpected.

I love Cora's involvement in the community and how her door is always open to help. I love her friendship with Conrad and I wonder if they might get together eventually. They seem to be such a good fit.

I am already reading the next book.

Another enjoyable read in the series, though it seemed to me this one was much slower paced than the last book. The question of who killed Hobart seems to be in limbo through most of the story, along with the question of who will be the next town counsellor. I can't imagine an election being held with only one viable candidate but Spiceville goes ahead with it.

Because the crime was discovered in the Paxton area, a detective from that city is investigating hit-and-miss with not enough time to do a proper investigation. He seems to show up day after day for a couple of hours and ask a few questions. This frustrates Police Chief Conrad as well as the towns newest police officer. Meanwhile, Mayor Cora tries to help Hobart's widow deal with the loss of the one who's "always looked after everything." The author makes a good point about men who think they'll live forever and the wife can just relax and leave all the financial affairs to them.

I believe there was more potential for suspense in this story, several times where I wondered if the author was going to go there, but she has chosen not to pursue those opportunities, rather going for a more low-key community affairs story.

A little more editorial polish wouldn't hurt. Superfluous actions like hand/arm movements, and thoughts repeated. I noticed a couple of places where the characters met and said a few things, then seemed to meet again with a proper greeting.

Spicetown

Welcome to Spicetown where the characters in this small town live a life solving the current murder. Life is not boring for the mayor, police chief and the town council as they all focus on solving the next crime. Welcome to the new police dog, Briscoe. Be ready for the twist and turns as you end up wishing you were part of life in Spicetown. Culprit is always discovered at the end. See if you can guess who it is. Can't wait for the next book.

I’m not a fan when an author takes the time to build , introduce and write a story with a character and than they disappear from the series. You make friends with these characters and don’t hear how they are after the horrible situation they were written into.
