The Graves Files: Case Two: A Monster Hunter Urban Fantasy Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 30 ratings

Training day is hard, but Devil's Night can be deadly.
Call me Graves. Not just because it's my name, but because if you're a baddie of the supernatural type, I'm going to put you there or die trying. If you're a new recruit to the monster hunting game who needs to be tested…that's what waits for you if you're not careful.

Which is why I have to put this kid through the paces. He's slow. He's weak. Even worse, he's whiney. Just why the organization wants him tested is beyond me, but here I am on Devil's Night letting him duke it out with a miniature golem we created to prove he's worthy.

Except I'm clenching the spell he's supposed to use to de-animate the creature, so I really can't expect the kid to protect himself.

What else shouldn't I expect? The gargantuan golem right on its heels. You know, the one we didn't create…

If you loved case one, this installment of the fun and sassy urban fantasy series will get your heart racing for all the right reasons.

Thea is a NEW YORK TIMES and USA TODAY Bestselling Author who writes action-packed urban fantasy with dark themes. She used to have a black lab at her feet when she wrote, warming up the calves. Now it's just a cuppa tea keeping her warm.

Whether she's finding ways to lure Isabella Hush into the Shadow Bazaar or throwing the switch on a new monster, her characters are usually deeply wounded individuals struggling for redemption. The romance is slow-burn but worth it, and the humor just might have a touch of Canadiana.

She's a huge fan of Patricia Briggs and Laurel K Hamilton and hopes you'll enjoy slipping into the skin of the characters she's created.

This was very interesting. Not what I expected from Thea. Full of twists you do not see coming. Quick read for me because I just loved it. A must read.

Our heroine has the unenviable task of breaking in the new guy. A process that might just break her.

This is book two of the series, but it does pretty well as a standalone. The essential bits are covered early on.

This is an urban fantasy story with a very dirty and gritty feel to it. The story is intriguing and quick paced, with an enjoyable storyline and a fascinating setting. The characters are also nicely done and I particularly like our heroine who has a bit of spunk and some definite snark. There is a lot of action in this one, as well as several twists and turns that keep things interesting. Overall, I am really enjoying this series and hope to see more.

Highly recommended.

Vicki Graves is a Monster Hunter, but right now, she is acting as a tester for a new recruit to see if he has what it takes. Not her favorite job and one that goes horribly wrong when another monster appears after the "test" Golem is vanquished. And, the new recruit disappears.

Graves isn't looking for a relationship, but she feels drawn to two of her fellow hunters, Scott and Chase. All of the hunters' skills are tested when a huge Golem starts wrecking havoc during Halloween. Will Graves and her fellow hunters be able to take away the Golem's power? Who is behind the Golem's appearance? Is it a fellow hunter or someone else?

This was an entertaining short book, full of action, magic, and just a hint of romance. I loved the characters and the story. I will definitely be on the lookout for more in this series. Thea Atkinson is a great author and her books always draw me in and entertain me. I was given the chance to read this book by the author and chose to review it.

Vicki Graves is a monster hunter and she's tasked with evaluating potential hunter, Saul. The boy turns out to be a disappointment when he can't handle a small golem, but that's not the biggest surprise of the night. Vicki and fellow hunter Chase must destroy a huge golem that appears out of the blue on Halloween. These two must protect the vulnerable children out trick or treating while the monster is bent on absolute destruction of everyone in its path.

Oh my goodness, where does Ms. Atkinson conjure these monsters from??? The master storyteller has done it again with a new fantastic and riveting Graves episode. I read it in one sitting and couldn't stop turning the pages until the final word was read. Good thing it was a shorter book because everything else in my household came to a stop while I finished the story. I love Vicki. She's such a badass, but she tries so hard to relate kids and it was good to see her trying to expand her people skills. There are so many twists and turns in this story that I recommend carving out enough time to read it in one sitting. Highly Recommended

Another fun and kooky adventure for Vicki Graves and the rest of the hunters crew. There’s a Gollum on the loose causing problems; some good action in this story. An entertaining read! The only thing I don’t like about this is the romance aspect; I’m not into no string flings, and wanting to sleep around with anyone. No heart or passion to that type of connection. The romance is very limited here, but I’m not sure I want to continue on to the next books if the romance is going to be emotionless; I’d rather have no romance. The supernatural elements are entertaining, so I still may give the next book a read. This book is a short read; I like that there’s a different case for each book. I gave the first book a 4 rating; I liked that one better than this one, so I’ll go with a 3 rating for this one.

Vicki has a hot date. One she is destined to never go on. Joy has assigned her to evaluate a new hunter prospect but things are not looking good for Saul's chances. His practice golem is only three feet tall and it is kicking his butt. Vicki can defeat that one but the ten-foot one that takes its place is another story. Where did that one even come from? And where did Saul disappear to? So begins a Halloween night from hell. Vicki just hopes to eventually get to go on her date with Chase - not smelling like a sewer.

Case 2 continues on where Case 1 left off. The action is so well written that I couldn’t put it down. The twist at the end is startling and could lead in many different directions from here. The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that I felt the ending to be contrived: the loose ends were suddenly put together and everyone lived happily ever after.
