Poppy Ogopogo, like a lot of children’s books, is a collaborative affair with words by Susan Faw and art by Alison Baker-Rasmussen. In children’s stories, the art is just as important as the words and must match with the text. It wouldn’t do to have a sweeping, epic tale of love at first sight and have all the pictures be charcoal drawings of demons. Unless it was about falling in love with a demon, but that probably won’t be a children’s story any time soon.

Instead of a story about demons, Poppy Ogopogo is perfectly matched tale of an Ogopogo who just wants some friends and the butterflies who make fun of her for not being a butterfly paired with gorgeous art to bring the characters and actions to life. It also confirmed my bias that butterflies are total jerk-faces.

By and by, catastrophe happens and Poppy finds herself in a conundrum. Whether or not to save the butterflies who treated her like dirt. It’s the perfect lesson to teach children and teach them early. And often, if the state of the world is any indication.

If you want to know what choice Poppy makes, you’ll just have to buy the book. It’s a great tale for young kids, especially those who might have an interest in xenobiology (yes, it’s a thing). But even those kids who probably wouldn’t want to spend their lives hunting down Ogopogos, Sasquatches, and Chupacabras should still be able to get into the vibe of beautifully-written story and the gorgeous artwork

What a beautiful and delightful and sad story. Poppy is always made fun of. The story shows her struggle to help or let her friends suffer through their misfortune. Perfect for everyone

This is a children's story with a moral, a story of bullying and hurt but also one of bravery and kindness. Poppy was different to the butterflies so they made fun of her and called her fat, making her lonely and sad so much so that she had to pretend play with imaginary friends till disaster struck Ann and her friends and they asked Poppy to save them calling her friend. It is a story of a big hearted Ogopogo who forgave her friends in their time of need, and went to their rescue, living on in their tales recounting her bravery and suddenly turning her into a hero which she deserved to be. This is a story of growing up and of acceptance of everyone, no matter our differences we all have something to give to others. Well done Susan for this beautiful book for children, written in rhyme, which I still enjoyed reading and loved the beautiful illustrations too. Poppy is a great character who I am sure you can write many adventures about and teach many more morals to young children through this lovely character.

To me this book can be a symbolism to a child that they should learn regardless of anything else in the world that they should except themselves regardless of any self doubt they may have about themselves and know they can be as fierce as the bravest lion. That bullying should not be accepted but defeated. This new book by author Susan Faw showed this lovely and convincingly .. it did have a poetic like feel about it but was easily understandable and a joy to read. I can see it being read again and again as new words and understandings will be discovered. The illustrations flowed beautifully along with the story and was drawn with great qualities that gave great pleasure to the eye.

Cute story with a moral that is woven quite well into it, but isn't the main focus of the story. The main character is well done.
