Silent Night Dynamite

Rate this book
Mayor Cora Mae Bingham has a new friend that has come to town to straighten up the coal mine’s failed finances and keep the pay checks flowing faithfully through the holiday, but his financial fixes may cause some unanticipated fallout.

Canine Officer Briscoe helps find a missing photographer, but the developments turn dark when the police begin to probe into her marriage. Only the dark room offers some light on the situation.

Despite these concerns, the citizens of Spicetown have a full heart at Christmastime and are busy preparing for the community play and choral presentation at the Community Center. Spicetown’s eccentric millionaire, Grace Keslar, is having a holiday party to celebrate her new business ventures, but Cora isn't certain where her invitation got lost.

Even when Cora Mae thought she knew everything about everyone in town, Harvey “Saucy” Salzman finds a way to surprise her!

This was my first visit to Spicetown but it won't be my last. I was looking for a Christmas-themed mystery read and this book delivered. Richey deftly handles multiple characters and even new readers such as I get an immediate sense of the history and personalities of the residents of the Midwest town. The mystery is intriguing, well-paced and interwoven against the Christmas activities of a small town I look forward to my next visit!

Spicetown Christmas Dynamite

I have read ever book on Spicetown mysteries so I like knowing the characters to understand where situations are going. It is a friendly town with little conflicts. I don’t like how many times they clarify a characters role but I’ve enjoyed the series.

Whole series

The whole Spicetown Mystery series was awesome to read. Richey as description of each character helped me imagine the scenes she wrote about. I hope there will be more in this series

In the previous book Amanda and Bryan get engaged. Now she's in wedding planning mode. This book opens with Saucy stopping by the mayor's office after paying his water bill.

Amanda and Cora are discussing wedding cake flavors and Saucy tells Amanda that Vicki could make anything Amanda chooses. While she doesn't do cakes for the Fennel Street Bakery, Saucy says she will do special orders. Saucy also has a part in the Christmas play, although it's changed from the original A Christmas Carol to A Comfort Falls Christmas. Cora hasn't heard of it and Saucy won't enlighten her as to the plot.

We meet Walter Slope who recently came to town, he's the new manager of the Paxton mine. He prefers being in Spicetown since he has fond memories of spending summers with his grandparents, it's also closer to the mine itself.

He also gives Cora an amended blast notice, they are closing off damaged and unused tunnels to help prevent accidents. He ends this meeting by asking Cora to dinner. That doesn't go over well with her.

We meet Grace Keslar the eccentric millionaire widow, who owns a mansion on the border of Spicetown. She's the talk of the town as she invites people to her Christmas Party. They're also talking about her plans to open a wellness spa.

I love Marmalade Magnolia Bingham, Cora's cat. We don't see a lot of her in these books, but she's much loved by Cora and Conrad.

Peter Jessup is very much surprised by a call from the sheriff's office wanting something of his wife Jane's. He's not at home but they think he is, so he has to leave his girlfriend Olivia D'Asaro. Someone called and reported her missing, they thought it was him. He hasn't seen her since he left home early this morning. They don't talk much at all anymore.

We again see Grace Keslar as she hires some new help for her home. She's also going to be offering rooms to out of towners who come to visit her wellness center.

Briscoe is very much a hero in this book, even though it takes a while, he does find the missing woman unfortunately she's not alive.

A lot happens in this book, between the woman's injuries, damages to the wellness center that's still under construction and unscheduled blasting will keep you on your toes.

This book is the perfect segue to the Keslar Mansion Mysteries. Since I've read those already, I am looking forward to the next spin-off featuring the Carom Seed Craft Corner, coming January 1, 2024.

The Spicetown series is set in a small Midwest city with friendly folks who know each other and Mayor Cora knows something about most of them. The mysteries are quick, easy reads; interesting but generally not too suspenseful. This one held my attention all the way through.

In this story the police have a missing-person case to help the County with and Mayor Cora has a suave new mine manager inviting her to lunch. A well plotted, fairly fast-paced story but some of the characters seem really dense. "It's just a little bomb, won't do much damage."

A couple of details could have been more developed, like the camera location and the missing film. (Do cameras have rolls of film these days?)

Keslar's mystery

A story of finding ome.mystery after.another. Names changed NY Mrs Kevlar to suit her fancy, to opening a bed & breakfast and a spa. While city employees figure out the crimes happening around town, Mrs. Kevlar plans the big Christmas party. Loved this story.

another good one!

I always enjoys the characters in this series but I especially liked Grace Kesler. She is quirky and her renaming of people is highly amusing. As I have read these books and this one as well the characters have become like family. I always look forward to the next book. They can’t come out fast enough!
