Publisher's summary

Even the great may fall.

Wu Ying's idle winter, one filled with training and recovery, is thrown awry when his Master and Elder Yang return, injured. The Three Seasons poison fills Master Cheng's veins, slowly killing the powerful Elder. His only hope - a rare antidote. But the ingredients for such an antidote are scarce and located in the deepest wilds.

Together, Wu Ying and Elder Yang take it upon themselves to embark on a Second Expedition to acquire the necessary materials. It would be a dangerous journey through the State of Wei normally, but in the shadows, enemies await to finish the job. Wu Ying is once again pitched against dark forces as a Sect war looms.

The Second Expedition is book 4 of the A Thousand Li series which focuses on immortal cultivation, eastern philosophy, wondrous martial art styles, and spirit beasts. The series draws upon the long tradition of wuxia and xianxia works and will thrill those looking for such high flying fantasy. The Second Expedition is written by Tao Wong, the best-selling scifi and fantasy LitRPG author of the System Apocalypse, the Adventures on Brad and the Hidden Wishes series.

For the record….

For anybody that reads reviews for an entire series before deciding to jump in on something new, I figured I’d leave this review here for you.

I mistakenly obtained and listened to this title thinking “The Second Expedition” was the 2nd book in the series. The first book is called “The First Step,” but on my phone, it just shows “The First…” unless you click on book details. So why am I telling you about my dumb mistake? Because I couldn’t tell it wasn’t the next book. That means Books 2 and 3 are clearly not that progressive to the story. I don’t feel like I missed anything in the middle two books, and after this book ended, I see no reason to go back and purchase them. I’ll buy Book 5 when it comes out, if like this one, I’ve ran out of other things to listen to, but I can only deduce that very little, if no progression of cultivation happens in Books 2 and 3. There were two things I kept thinking I must’ve missed while falling asleep with my headphones in, and that was the matter of his finances and his breakup with his GF, but knowing what happened to his finances wouldn’t have added anything to the storyline, and previous reviews about his relationship were bad anyways, so I never rewinded the story. Most likely that part of the MC’s story happened in Book 3, but meh… This is no Will Wight “Cradle” cultivation series. It’s decent and worth listening to when you have no other books you’re interested in, but you could easily skip from Book 1 to Book 4 as I accidentally did. Up to you. Just thought I’d share my experience.

Delicious character progression, plots uncovered, and power developed. The pacing this series is like a perfect drip of nirvana and just so. darn. satisfying.

Very good

I feel like the series gets better with each book. I love the struggles and hardship that moulds the main character. Can't wait for the next audio book.

Another great book in the series

Once again the author has outdid himself in this excellent novel. I would’ve given him five stars on this story but unfortunately the ending was a bit of a cliché and unlike the other books in this series the author has stayed a bit away from that type of ending. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Well done

This series continues to be the best written series by Tao Wong. The characters have an incredible amount of depth. There has yet to be a book in this series that did not suitable character progression. Also, I must say the pacing is perfect. I can't imagine how intricate the plot outline must be. well done and can't wait for the next one.

On a Roll

Another great edition to the series. This series is the best cultivation story out there in the market. It's unique, original and remains true to its roots. It's been fun journeying the thousand li, and I look forward to the next book. Keep them coming!

Continued greatness

per usual, Travis Baldree is amazing. I truly love his narration.

the story was great. I love the pace. others think it is too slow, but I appreciate the journey. If feels more real: not drawn out.

*if the author decides to kill off Liu Tao Hei, I will stop reading/ listening to the series. Tao Hei is my favorite character.

I'm looking forward to book 5.

I can't wait for book 4

So this book was pretty darn good only a few small issues, mainly are main character broke up with his Gf off screen, well them splitting is fine it feels lesser having happened off screen.
The beginning of the book has good tension, but then sorta slows not working with that tension however the middle and end of the book are fantastic.
Even with that said this whole book just reminded me of old martial art books i have watched and i love it!

What a ride!!!

I found this series by and enjoy it a lot. I like the slow build up of the MC so there will be more books. Way to go Tao Wong!!
