Into the Iron Shadows (Shadows of War) Paperback – July 19, 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
On the heels of escaping Belgium, Evelyn Ainsworth is facing yet another invasion. The Wehrmacht is advancing faster than anyone expected, and all she wants is to reach England before the Nazis take Paris. With smuggled documents in her possession, and a fellow evacuee who carries secrets of his own, she must escape once again before France falls.
German bombers are wreaking havoc on Allied troops trying to reach the coast, and RAF Flying Officer Miles Lacey is frustrated. Despite flying daily patrols, his squadron has yet to engage the enemy. He’s itching to get in the fight, but nothing can prepare him for what’s coming.
As Panzers race to the Channel and the Luftwaffe dominates the skies, a storm of evil sweeps across the continent. Amidst the chaos and destruction, only the strongest will withstand the darkest storm.
And march into iron shadows.

About the author

CW Browning was writing before she could spell. Making up stories with her childhood best friend in the backyard in Olathe, Kansas, imagination ran wild from the very beginning. At the age of eight, she printed out her first full-length novel on a dot-matrix printer. All eighteen chapters of it. Through the years, the writing took a backseat to the mechanics of life. Those mechanics, however, have a great way of underlining what genuinely lifts a spirit and makes the soul sing. After attending Rutgers University and studying History, her love for writing was rekindled. It became apparent where her heart truly lay. Picking up an old manuscript, she dusted it off and went back to what made her whole. CW still makes up stories in her backyard, but now she crafts them for her readers to enjoy. She makes her home in Southern New Jersey, where she loves to grill steak and sip red wine on the patio.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2022Now having read books 1-5, I can only hope there is more to come. The five books have covered two years in Evelyn's life from 1938-1940. Now France has fallen and she is hunted by two NAZI agents as she tries to get back to England and safety. Author CW Browning has woven so much detail into this saga that I feel a kinship to young Evelyn and her family and friends. I now know them well... and it simply cannot end here. Signed, "Waiting for more."

Characters are too lucky
I will finish the series if I can find other books
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2021I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The story involves an English woman who is an accomplished MI6 agent in the early days of WW2. She clashes with German agents and troops as she serves the Crown in Norway, Belgium and France. The book also involves other characters who are RAF fighter pilots who battle the Luftwaffe over Europe. The author also makes you feel as though you are in England and Europe in those tense early days of the war. A great book and series. I highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2021The German Army is advancing much faster then expected. They face very little resistance. Belgium and France have fallen. There soldiers are surrendering. Resistance groups are splintered with no one to give them direction. Survival is day to day. Civilians are also targeted to strike fear in the general population. They are succeeding. Britain is Europe's only last chance to survive. America has not yet entered the war. The primary characters in this book are now learning first hand the horrors of war. Another excellent read in this series!! My highest recommendation!!

Hard to imagine how, but they seem to be getting better 😊
Hope she goes through the whole war. I'll buy every one !
Highly recommend !
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2021Not much happens in this slow and meandering story. It’s made more challenging with the many code names and jumping from story to story. Little conflict (other than the war in the background) and little reward. Neither a tragedy nor a Hollywood ending.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2023Just finish the pen ultimate book in the series, all keep you wanting to read the next. Not sure what I'll do after I finish the next.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable
I have read all the Shadows of War series and while they are enjoyable I have one small issue. The author constantly refers to England when WW2 was fought by Great Britain and Northern Ireland not just England. As a proud and passionate Scot it’s an oversight I can’t ignore
