Grave New World (Grave Digger Mythos Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 544 ratings

The Council Gods Are Brutal. The Lesser Gods Are Worse. I'm All That Stands Between Them...
You won't find me in the lore of the gods, but I'm there, hidden between the lines. Whenever the lesser gods torture humanity, creating armies of supernatural beasts to rain hell down on the innocent, it's my job to stand against the tidal wave of pain and death.

I like my job. It's fun, even if the gods are a bunch of bastards.

But in the thousands of years I've been running this gig, I've never seen the lesser gods pull together as a team. They've always been way too selfish and power-hungry for that.

Until now, apparently.

Perses, one of the lesser gods, has somehow managed to corral them into a unit of death and destruction, and the council has recognized their creation--me--isn't capable of handling it alone. So, for the first time since I've been doing this, I'm being forced to run a team of people who need to learn the ins and outs of what I do.

It ain't easy, especially since my new crew wasn't exactly built for this kind of mayhem. That's what happens when you take a bunch of normals and gift them with immortality, I suppose.

If we fail, the lesser gods will find their way onto the council, and that'll spell doom for the world as we know it.

My name is Grave Digger, and this is my story.

It's true - gods are jerks. So when they get out of line - as they do - that's where Grave Digger comes in. But he's only one, whatever he is, and when a god and his allies get up to serious no-good, Grave needs help. Easy-peasy, right? For a millennia-old loner who doesn't play well with others.Right.Grave is the least likable guy you'll come to love, and his team is bucketloads of fun to watch navigate one heck of a learning curve. Enjoy!

Ok, I’ve always thought that JP Logsdon has a brilliant sense of both wit and sarcasm, and he has never failed to elevate “snark” to an art-form, but THIS book…. THIS BOOK has left me speechless and (metaphorically) lying on the ground writhing in laughter.

And the plot and storyline are pretty damn good, too!

So tell me, what more do you need? Hilarity, awesome characters, and a great story… from where I’m standing I don’t think you could ask for much more.

And, if you thought you knew how good Logsdon can write, you’re in for a surprise because he has clearly leveled up. ENJOY!

Definitely a unique and very thoughtful take.
I am a devout Christian and I feel the need to point out it Could be religiously offensive to some, however, please remember it's a book of fiction and a small case "g' is being used. However a single sentence of 'well, obviously something created everything in the first place' would have removed my feeling of needing to note that. But people are sensitive, so I am tossing out that basically a few parts are probably going to be right on the edge for some people.

The story is well written. The characters are excellent.
Four stars instead of five is because there's so much more I wanted to read in regards to the gang - and I reserve the right to edit this review and change it to a Five in the event more character background and development occurs in book two, which I am about to start reading momentarily.

Very important to note this tale is actually Fun and will have you flipping over to Google to read up on all the mythology references And it will have you laughing out loud in several places - not that it's a comedy.

I enjoyed it and am placing 'Mister' (lol - read the book, you'll get it then) Logsdon on my list of writers to read more of in the future.

I'm not sure how I found this book but I'm glad I did. Fun read, I initially thought it would be a lot darker. Don't get me wrong, quite a bit of death and destruction, but in s fun way. 😉

The humor is snarky and the action is almost continuous which is difficult when trying to have an actual plot. Worth reading.
  • Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2025
Entertaining. Long winded. Funny. Gruesome. Could replace all the deities with politicians… and roughly have the same stories. Not for a Christian. …
Remarkable imagination, yet, it just drug on too long.
I will not be reading the next book
    Sorry.

All I can say is wow,! What a great start to a new world, and new characters. From the beginning this book is off to a fast and exciting start. And of course, there is a group of trouble makers, making trouble, but what is it that they are really after?
And my favorite character is Mitzy (surprise!). You won’t want to put it down once you start!

This great new series from JPL showcases exactly how the gods war went and how un beknown to the human race is still on going as the Gods use monsters against humans. Now comes out hero Grave a kinda anti hero gifted with powers by the Gods to keep everyone in line. This is a gruff kick ass immortal who as seen it and done it all but he seems to be quite likeable in his own way with an interesting backstory and of course cool weapons and abilties to plow through masses of monsters in well crafted action scenes. Wonderful engaging and typical of JPLs writing style.

4.0 out of 5 stars interesting mythology
Reviewed in Australia on August 11, 2022
Interesting story with gods and immortals and a fight between good and evil, with a few twists. The story is amusing in places, and I really liked Mitzy the dog, the characters are a mixed group, with some obvious references to Role playing quests with a hint of Dungeons and Dragons thrown in. The ending was interesting and there was a definite lead into the next story.
