Davey's Christmas Miracle

Rate this book
Davey hates Christmas with a passion.

He’s got good reason too.

Everything awful that has happened to him has happened during the most “wonderful” time of the year.

That’s why when he meets a guy who’s seemingly perfect in every way, he doesn’t believe it will lead to anything good, or long-term.

But maybe, just maybe, this year, Davey will get his happily ever after after all.

Davey’s Christmas Miracle is an insta-love holiday novella, inspired by the author’s real-life meet-cute.

Jingle Spell is a relatively angst free May-December Christmas romance between one MC who has given up on finding lasting romance (May) and one who has recently gotten out of a long term relationship (December).

Davey is a retail worker who hates his job, which is fair at the holidays, but I really wished he wasn’t such a bitch about it. There is plenty to hate about working retail without bugging his manager ad nauseum about time off and always being late. It made him seem too immature and hard to believe he was already giving up on romance. He didn’t have the greatest track record, which seemed pretty normal for his youth to be honest.

Davey muddles through his shift, nothing too much seems to happen and when he gets home he hits up a dating app because he’s a pretty lonely guy. He finds someone to meet up with and it turns out to be a customer he had in his line that day at work. They recognized one another, were pretty happy to see one another again and had a very nice date. I had hoped they would have had more of a connection when they met at the store earlier in the day, but nothing of significance happened and the description of them interacting was just a thing that happened rather than a meet-cute. It was an opportunity missed that would have given their connection more meaning.

The two spent time getting to know one another and did all the sweet dating things. It was obvious they were falling for one another and I liked their interactions even if their banter was a little stiff. It was good to learn more about Davey’s history and it explained a little bit about why Davey really just wanted to love and be loved.

While I said the story was relatively angst free there was a moment when Avery’s past came back around and it was a bit of a heartbreaker for Davey. It was relatively brief but kind of crappy of Avery. He redeemed himself, mostly. It was just a little quick, I wasn’t ready to forgive him just yet, but he has some pretty damn good words and they were definitely going to get back together, so Davey did what was best for Davey.

I do believe in the HEA for them even though their time together was short from meeting to I love you’s. I would have liked an epilogue, mostly for Davey. He wasn’t happy with his job and didn’t seem to have quality friends, so reading about him maturing and going for some happiness in all aspects of his life, with Avery’s support, would have been a perfect end.

This is an okay Christmas read for those who like low angst and most sex happening off page.

There's a few mistakes in the editing which threw me out of the story a bit but not enough to ruin it. I'm expecting one more run before it goes live will catch all of those and it'll be a nice festive romance for someone looking for an easy and angst free read.

It's also got a new cover on the latest edition and it works well at capturing the age gap.

One more holiday novella. I liked this one, but it wasn't too memorable. A guy who is recently single (as in less than 24 hours) meets a guy who is recently out of a long-term relationship (not as recent though). They make a connection on an app and decide to make a go of it.
There is an instant kind of connection in this story. Not quite love, but a certain *something*. And they are both exactly what each other needs just when they need it
I would love to catch up with these guys to see how they are doing in a few years. A HFN with a hopeful future.

Cute, low angst. Avery and Davey meet in a menswear shop and then later connect over a hook up app. Their relationship happens quickly but a sweet fluffy read, just right for a Sunday morning.

This sweet, at times frantic (there is a heck of a lot going on in Davey's head) rollercoaster ride of a book was such an enjoyable ride. Despite several brushes with whiplash and two adorably weird MCs the author managed to skillfully guide these two together by the end. I really liked the ongoing monologue in Davey's head, though by having that as the single POV I didn't get to know Avery as well as I would have liked. Although, that also allowed the author to keep the suspence going till almost the end. A thoroughly enjoyable and heartwarming read!

This is a cute Christmas romance, but had some issues that reduced my enjoyment. Davey’s narration is patently abrupt, and made me feel as if he’s an immature character. Also, I was frustrated by the deeply-rooted Queen’s English. In a story of two “Americans” in New York, for me that’s just a non-starter. Avery is a gem who Davey would be sad to lose, for sure. And Davey is sad after a predictable tantrum about the ex. Again, Davey acting petulant and immature made it hard to find him likable, even in the face of his sympathetic backstory. Expect an HEA once Davey figures out not fighting for Avery and what love they’d developed was the same as walking away.

A sweet holiday novella to warm you up.

Davey is newly single and having a horrible day. Late to work, customers being a pain and its the time of year he hates the most- Christmas. But a surprise meeting with a man who caught his eye during the day, may just turn his bah hum bug around.

Avery is new to the city and after "meeting" Davey at a store that day, when he finds him on a dating app, he decides to take a chance.

The chemistry is there from the start with Davey and Avery. But will Davey be able to get over his past and trust that Avery isn't going to turn into the love'em and leave'em like all the others.

This was a great quick Holiday read. The only thing that made me not put it at 5 star was that these were two men from the US and yet they were using British words... I still don't know what a Jumper is!? But a great story none the less.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Davey has not had an easy life and after he breaks away from his family he continues to struggle to get through life but at least he doesn’t have to rely on anyone. Avery is new to the city and looking for friends, their connection via a dating app helps to move them both in a new direction.

I felt bad for Davey, he continues to try and have relationships but they always end the same and he doesn’t see the point and keep it up. Avery shows him that they can build up a friendship first and then move on to more but will Avery’s past come back to haunt them both? I loved Avery’s gestures to show Davey what he wanted and how he feels, they were understated but perfect. They really built a solid foundation to get their relationship going and it looks like it will be lasting.

A sprinkling of christmas, a newly single man and an unexpected meeting, could it lead anywhere.

Davey has just become single and I mean just, his job sucks so his not feeling great so decides to get a hook up on a dating? site. Davey gets a surprise when a face appears on his screen, it a customer from the shop earlier that day.

Avery is relatively new in town and looking for company, his thrilled to see Davey on the site he uses.

What follows is the two of them getting to know one another, could Davey's luck be changing.

Its a sweet read and made even nicer by the fact they didn't jump into bed on first meet up. I liked both characthers, they were both open about their feelings and situation.

A quick and easy christmas MM read

Unexpected meetings turning into love are always perfect holiday reads. It's love wrapped in a Christmas bow!

Davey is a newly single guy. He doesn't seem to have the best luck in love and he's not a fan of his job. Avery is brand new to town. He visits Davey's shop earlier in the day and when they come "screen face to screen face" with each other on a dating site; you can't help but wonder if it's Christmas magic.

The book evolves from sad and lonely to sweet, happy, and lovely. Novellas are tricky because sometimes you feel like maybe you didn't have enough time to really feel and absorb characters and situations. In Jingle Spell, the author really fleshed out the characters well, the pacing was great, and dialog was wonderful.

This is what you look for in a holiday story.

✮ (¸.•´✶ "It hadn't been a dream after all...A man actually chose him over another. He was wanted."

First time reads from new authors are pretty iffy. Especially when you have to guess their writing style, their voice and your thoughts going in. But in interacting, I got to see a playful, and hilarious side of the author that came across in the words placed on the page.

He made Davey Grinch-like when a break up happened out of the blue. But then again, that seemed to be a recurring thing. So it was good to see him putting his foot down during the holidays as to not dating again. Then in walks Avery, sweet, willing to listen but not mister fashion forward. Turns out he is a recent New York transplant who himself is going through a break-up.

These two first meet when Avery shops at Davey's place of business and the younger man cannot help but admire Avery. Then an app hookup brings these two together with unexpected togetherness. How do two men, so different in thoughts and action, become so perfect for each other? If you like insta-attraction, slow burn, off the screen loving, then this is the book for you.

What I liked about it... sometimes fast paced, instant romance happens. You have to be open to what curves life throws you. And always be ready to fall in love when you least expect it.

I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion from the author.

Jingle Spell was the first book I read by this new to me author, Chris Ethan. I have to say I am a sucker for Christmas stories and the cover was too adorable to resist.

This is a very cute and simple novella, easy to read and light. A lovely way to spend a couple of hours before bedtime. Nothing complicated in the plot, just what I need in a holiday reading. Just two persons, Davey and Avery, who meet and find each other interesting, and later realize something more could happen with a future together made of new memories (and pictures, you’ll understand if you will decide to read jingle Spell) could be built. And what conquered me was that I really was able to see them still together in the coming years.

I recommend this new release by Chris Ethan, I will surely check the author’s other works.

The cover art by Ethereal Ealain is well done and so into the Christmas spirit and it fits the plot. I was gone as soon as I saw it.

This is the first book I've read by Chris Ethan and I was immediately pulled in by the characters. The plot is fairly simple; love, lost love, found love, maybe lost love, HEA. But it's what the author did with it that made it so good.

You have a character who has come to distrust all the romance and joy of Christmas because he keeps looking for love and it isn't returned. Then a chance encounter at work garners him the interest of a newcomer to town. Some simply romantic dates and a personal connection open him up to trying love one more time.

You must read this and experience the love, pain, doubts and joy first hand. It is a wonderful story just in time for the holidays!

This has been reworked and is a bit different from the original.
It's a very romantic Christmas story with the 2 mc's forming an instant connection, but with a little will they won't they in the form of ex drama.
For me, the sex scenes let it down, I couldn't get into them but they were short and I enjoyed the ending

Davey doesn’t hate Christmas time. It’s just not a great time for him. He is lying next to his boyfriend and catches him on Grindr, causing an early morning breakup. Now he has to deal with stupidity of the season at the mall while also dealing with a bitter boss. “He hated feeling like this, being so unlike himself, but he couldn’t help it. His soul was black and his mood was blue.” You feel for him. “All he wanted was a guy who could stay in a relationship with him for more than two months. It wasn’t too much to ask, yet so impossible to attain. In the six years since he’d come of age and out of the closet his most notable partnership had lasted five weeks and ended over what else? A text message.”

A customer with sad grey eyes and a sprinkle of salt-and-pepper hair buying a beautiful scarf makes the day a little brighter, even if said man doesn’t ask Davey out. A night out is what he needs, so off to Grindr he goes, where he talks with a sweet man named Avery, who of course is the scarf man and they make a date.

Davey really is pretty needy. He has a pretty terrible past and he’s always trying to make the next guy THE guy, which doesn’t usually work. But this time it just might be the right man as they get to know each other (and sort of have an insta-love going on). Up until this point, the book was a 4 for me because I liked both Davey and Avery and I appreciated how they were getting to know each other. Then a blast from Avery’s past shows up and his response to Davey left me cold. I lost respect for him and at that point, Davey was so low I just wanted him to find someone else. “Just his damn luck. Alone and battered, yet again.” I think it bothered me because Avery came across as so much younger and immature than he was supposed to be and had been up to that point.

So this is a sweet holiday story with two lonely men who find each other.

A Nice Novella- 3.5 stars

Jingle Spell is a short read that’s perfect to fit into your holiday reading schedule. For a novella, the characters are surprisingly well-developed. The dialogue moves the story along quickly, but gives all the details and chemistry you need to feel satisfied with this romance. The start was a little sullen but it set the stage for the changes within one of the main characters, so looking back, I like the approach. Considering the depth and emotion Chris Ethan managed to squeeze into a short story, I’m definitely interested in reading more from this author. I appreciated that this was a departure from your typical holiday, overly cheery book, but managed to still spark that Christmastime magic in the air.

Super cute, low angst Christmas novella. I love Rhys Everly's fresh writing, and though this is somehow a bit different from his usual style, what with so few steam, the book is still a joy to read!
Avery and Davey are adorable together. Having Davey’s POV throughout the book is super entreating, as his brain is a mysterious place conjuring up weird scenarios and rambling monologues, but for me, at least, this left me wondering what was going on in Avery’s mind, except for what he shared with Davey.

Wow this book hit me between the eyes. My word. I've had several characters get to me because they've been through things I have, and I am drawn to Davey in the same way. He thoroughly breaks my heart. But he CLINGS to hope with all he is and this book we get to see what happens.

Davey's day is just one great thing after another. (Note of sarcasm). He found out the guy he is seeing is playing on the Grindr app and apparently dating other men. So needless to say that didn't end well. Plus it’s freaking Christmas. The assholes are put in force along with the world's dumbest customers. His boss is riding him for being late and the main boss won't give him the time off he should be getting. He decides no more men. He's done. He's so tired of never being enough. Maybe he will cruise the apps for a one night stand off and on and that will be it. Until a pair of grey eyes framed in glasses looks at him and takes his breath away. While cashing his customer out, he runs through a dialogue in his head, but in the end decides, no. The guy is probably out of his league anyway. So when he checks a online app he is very surprised to see a message from Ave. (Short for Avery). And they decide on a drink. Drink turns into dinner and some of the best conversation either has ever had. And both go home alone. Over the next few weeks, Davey is full of doubts as they get to know each other, but he's trying to believe Avery really wants him for him and not sex. Especially as they haven't done it just yet. But the past comes back to haunt them and now it's time to decide….do they stay together and make a future together or call it quits.

I think Davey is the gay male me. Oh my word. The worries and the thoughts that constantly go through his head. Is he enough? Why isn't he enough? Why does he keep getting dumped when he gives his all? Why do they only want sex? Does no one want a relationship? Does no one want love? Oh Davey does. So so much. His heart yearns for that special man that will be just his. He's heard all the break up lines before. He's heard all the excuses before. So when he meets Avery, he is already set up for sex and it to be over. Even though that will disappoint him. And he doesn't want to be needy but damn. But Avery surprises him. He shows he's really listening when Davey talks. He shows he's interested. And even though the tension and buzz for sex is there, it's so much more. Avery wants all the things Davey does. But after ending a 7 year relationship, he's still getting over it. But something about Davey makes him happier than he's ever been. He finds himself smiling and laughing so often. And after what his ex put him through, he didn't really think he would again. Of course I'm in the background screaming at these two to just be together lol. But it takes time. It takes trust and faith. And when the past comes to the front, they have to learn what in life is more important. And who is more important. And they have to believe in each other that they aren't each other's past but instead they are each other's futures.

I will tell you, I really recommend this book, but it had me in such tears. I'm in such empathy with Davey and know how he feels. And it just tears at you. But in a good way eventually. Because he remembers hope. So I guess like Davey, we need to hope.

Jingle Spell is a relatively quick holiday read that is a bit insta-lovey, with angst brought on by the characters’ own insecurities. There is some character growth for Davey, who seems to go from his highly cynical outlook on life and people towards a more balanced attitude the more time he spends with Avery…though Davey does appear to have low self esteem even near the end of the story—at least when it comes to relationships.

While when Davey and Avery first started seeing each other I felt that spark of new interest between them, as the story went on I didn’t feel their connection as closely, and Avery actually seemed to become a tiny bit jealous when they’d be out together. When some conflict is introduced in the form of Avery’s ex coming back to see him, it also sends Davey backward a bit in terms of his attitude and self esteem again.

The story doesn’t really have any major drama, just the angst that is really self-created by Davey and Avery, springing from their own self doubts. One thing that did irritate me about this book is that it is set in New York City, however there are quite a few British-isms to be found throughout the story. There is also the matter of how a bar manager and a cashier in a retail store (not high paying jobs, especially a cashier) can each live in their own apartments without roommates and still have money to spend eating out and shopping seemingly without worrying about costs in New York.

Those concerns aside, Jingle Spell was a 3-star read for me and while there’s not a lot of on-page sex scenes, this story is still meant for readers 18+ for adult language and some sexual content.

Jingle Spell is a cute holiday read with featuring two sweet men looking to find happiness. Davey hates Christmas, all the festivities, decorations, people all over the place and just all of it. It doesn’t help that he was just dumped. He meets Avery while at work one day and thanks to a dating ap, Avery has tracked him down. Davey is determined to not to give his heart away so easily, but sweet Avery works his way in quicker than Davey thought possible. The two start spending time together, falling for each other but when Avery’s ex shows up it will test what they really have together. Davey is pretty sure that’s just his luck though.

These two are just adorable together, Avery easily breaking through Davey’s gruff exterior. Davey definitely hasn’t had an easy life and learning more about him broke my heart, he’s gone through some rough stuff for such a young man. He’s sure that he’s not good enough and that everyone will leave him eventually, but Avery seems to be testing that. He pays attention to him, listens to his stories and really seems to care. I loved that about Avery, just steady and wonderful and totally swoon-worthy! I liked these two together, they are a couple you can definitely root for, especially around the holidays.

This was a sweet, quick read without a lot of drama or angst, just a good paced story about two men who deserve love. It’s a story that brings out the magic of Christmas and romance and I enjoyed the sweetness. Chris Ethan does a good job of bringing these two together and getting them to their happy.

Jingle Spell is a sweet Christmas story. At first Davey comes across as shallow but as the story progressed and I got to know him I changed my mind. I love when that happens. Christmas can be a lonely time of year, especially for those not in relationships, and I thought the author captured the feelings of bitterness that often accompany that aloneness perfectly. Avery’s a nice guy, and I enjoyed seeing the two men’s relationship grow, although realistically they were both second guessing themselves. After failed relationships on both sides, it was understandable that they would, which I appreciated. I liked the way they took the time to become friends instead of just jumping into bed first.

The supporting cast were more stereotypical, but given the length of the story, and the fact that they were seen through Davey’s perspective, I think that was a reflection of his mood rather than a true representation of who they were.

One highlight for me, followed by an ‘aww’ moment was Davey’s description of the picture frames he makes as “keepers of memories.” I hope these guys have a long happy future together making memories to fill Davey’s frames.

I’d recommend Jingle Spell to readers who enjoy a sweet Christmas romance story, and men who take the time to become friends before they become lovers.

Davey’s Christmas Miracle by Rhys Everly is a very poignant story about 2 men who found each other at Christmas time. Davey can’t seem to find a boyfriend who will stick around with him for longer than a few months, even though he tries very hard, and can’t figure out why they don’t. Avery is new in town and has left his ex of 7 years and is starting over. Davey works in a clothing store when Avery comes in to buy some clothes. They feel a spark but he leaves without exchanging names. They find each other over an app and meet for drinks and dinner. Davey, ever hopeful, finds Avery to be sweet and wants more than a night with him but he is always worried that something will go wrong. Avery also likes Davey and finds him refreshing and real and wants more. The story continues as they date over the next few weeks, taking things slowly, which has never happened to Davey before, and this helps him to believe that things might be different this time. Then the ex shows up and they have to decide if what they have together is worth it. This is a short story that is very angsty but sweet as the two men get to know each other. It is even better knowing that Mr. Everly is telling the story of how he and his husband met, although I’m sure he changed a few details! I really enjoyed it and and can’t wait for more books from this author.

Just as Davey has decided that love is not worth the heartache, Avery enters his life. Will an online connection lead to more than just sex or was Davey right about love and heartache? Will the holiday season bring him a happy heart or is he destined to watch others find happiness?

Jingle Spell is a wonderful and amazing holiday romance that is full of hope and passion. There is never a shortage of happy romances this time of year so what makes Jingle stand out? Well, for me its the genuineness of Davey's heartache, the feeling that he is not only the guy next door but he could be you. We've all felt the loneliness at some point or other so it gives hope to those who have given up on love all while entertaining us with a wonderful story.

Novellas can be tricky little buggers. Short stories are expected to be short and to the point, novels are in depth and have plenty of time to put the characters through the wringer but novellas are in between and have to find the right balance of quick yet detailed. The truth is what makes Jingle Spell worth reading is its well written, with lovely characters, and its fun with just the right amount of drama and perfectly paced from beginning to end. I can't wait to see what the future holds for this author.

✔ Letto!
Carino, dolce e corto.
Per me è ❤ ❤ ❤ e 💋
