"I'm not going gay because of a pretty young man with pink hair and a gorgeous smile."

Parker

Divorced. Beaten down. Directionless.

They don't call me Officer Grumpy-pants for nothing.

But then a ray of sunshine with pink hair steps into my life and...

He changes my entire worldview.

Somehow I end up working in his bubble tea shop and trying to protect him from whoever is causing trouble in his life.

But who's going to protect me from these new, strange feelings for my sweet, Korean boss?

Hwan

He's big and grumpy and everything I imagine a Navy SEAL to be like.

But despite his intimidating appearance all I want is to put a smile on his face.

It becomes my new challenge and I will do anything to succeed.

I just have to be careful not to fall in love for my straight, gruff employee.

Love is the last thing I need in my life.

Even if he makes it look so irresistible, I will not fall for that mother-Parker!

Welcome to Mayberry Holm, a small island in the Atlantic full of crime, secrets and happily-ever-afters, and the ex-Navy SEALs that come to deal with them all.

Before you start Mother Parker, pick up the YBBB freebie Forever Asher first and give that a quick read.

Although Mother Parker could technically be read as a standalone, for context and some of the side characters, you'll want that background. I read it first and I'm glad I did.

This had a sexuality awakening, grumpy/sunshine, close proximity and a dash of danger with a protection racket.

With the dual pov it was easy to fall in love with Parker, he doesn't mean to be such a grump but he's had a hard time.

Hwan was adorable and I loved all the bubble tea stuff so much I want to try one - I don't like tea.

The whole set up of the team protecting the island is still in its early stages but I love where it's going.

Looking forward to both Joey's and Carson's stories

This was such a fun read with fun mcs.
Their grumpy and sunshine chemistry only lasted for about 45% of the book until the grumpyness finally wears off for the sunshine and he became a sweetheart, but that doesn't matter because I loved their dynamic so much, the chemistry is definitely there.

I always love a good opposites attract book. Expecially when it’s grumpy/sunshine. And I really loved how it was done in this book. These two characters were just super nicely fleshed out and they ended up really complimenting each other. They relationship and how they were developed made it sound like they were perfect for each other and I really enjoyed that.

Also, I really enjoyed the relationship in this book. It was super cute and the characters had really good chemistry and a good banter, which made the book very enjoyable to me.

A good sexual discovery is also one of my favourite trope in books and I really enjoyed the one in this book. It felt super relalistic in own it was done and that made it super fun to read for me. I really enjoyed this part of the book and had a lovely time reading it.

The plot of this book was a super enjoyable mystery that I really liked reading about and I thought that it was super fun to read.

Some parts of this book lost me a little and I didn’t enjoy them as much as I wish I did, but overall, I still really enjoyed this book.

This book was a very fun and cute read and I really enjoyed reading it.

A Joyfully Jay review.

Mother Parker is the first book in a series featuring former SEALs looking for redemption on Mayberry Holm, a process that includes finding love. Both MCs have had a lot of trauma in their lives. Parker had abusive parents and tried to protect his younger siblings, somehow, despite having little discernible contact for years while enlisted. Hwan’s father was horrible; he abandoned him when he noticed Hwan’s effeminate behavior as a child. His parents are both dead, yet Hwan has a strong support system with the Mayberry Holm community and his grandma. And his fans, who all want a look at the surly ex-SEAL learning the ways of bubble tea making.

This book was really just a lot of fun to read!

I don't believe that this series is intended to be taken too seriously. As per the prequel, although there is a suspense/mystery theme, it plays second to the relationships between the characters. Not just the romantic relationship between Hwan and Parker, but between all the cast members that create a found family on the island.

This is not a series where I'm looking for hidden meanings, heavy content, an exploration of stereotypes or the human condition. But you know what? I like it because I don't have any of those expectations.

This series is just light, relaxing, escapism. A story and characters that grab you and make you care about them. It often has funny moments, and a lot of the romantic feels I love in my books. A good dose of steam, a teeny tiny touch of drama, and a light but gets you thinking mystery theme, and this series ticks a lot of my boxes for an enjoyable read.

I would HIGHLY recommend that you grab the free (for this year) prequel "Forever Asher" from the Prolific Works Your Book Boyfriend's Boyfriend (Ybbb) Giveaway because this not only tells the story of two main characters - Maddox and Asher, it also sets up the story with all the history between the men, the Outpost, and why Wyatt is setting up his vigilante team.

I really enjoyed Mother Parker and I'm looking forward to the second book and seeing if the resident bad boy is really that bad.....

Hwan is living his dream. He’s opened his own Boba shop and life is good, even if it is a bit lonely. He has his grandma and his trio of crows. He is having issues with things going wrong in his shop. He also has the most annoying man in the world as a bodyguard, as if he really needs one.

Parker is a grumpy gus. Life hasn’t been nice to him. He moves to an island because his old boss asked him to. He’s looking towards his next job with trepidation. Fortunately for him, his babysitting gig turns out to be the best thing that ever happened to him.

Being a grump myself I can totally relate to Parker. Sunshiny Hwan is another matter all together though. Seriously, be warned cavities ahead he’s so darn sweet. The author brought them together nicely. I guess it was almost instalove.

Really good characters. Some angsty moments but those are offset by the Golden Girls and Hwan’s grandma. Not just the main characters were great, the whole cast of (sometimes) oddball people peppered the book with joy.

It was a hoot to read this book.

Okay, new series! Protector, opposites, Navy SEALs? Why would I turn this down?

Nay… I didn’t….

Okay, so… Parker, nicknamed by his own sister, Officer Grumpypants, or something silly but accurate, was really hard for me to like. I didn’t for a good bit of this book, I’ll be honest.
It was almost like he took douchey-ness to extra douchy-ness… but he grew on me.
He grew on me mostly because I liked how he eventually was with Hwan.

Hwan… I loved immediately. He’s the sun to Parker’s gloom, living his best, albeit somewhat lonely life, he was content. I liked that he didn’t let Parker’s disposition get him down and when someone is threatening his bubble tea shop, the protector Parker, sets out to find who’s responsible.

I will admit that for a first book, I did feel a little out of the loop at times… like there was something I was missing or maybe should’ve read first, but I didn’t find out about the sneak peek until I’d finished and read other reviews to see if maybe I missed something.

I wish someone would’ve told me sooner, but meh…

It was a fun little roller coaster ride through the isle of Mayberry, and I’m really excited to see who’s next!

New series, new fictional island, the same Rhys Everly’s guaranteed good time!
Fresh new series, set in a fictional island in Massachusetts, ridden with crime but with a strong community and a bunch of ex-SEALs that have taken residency there and are determined to clean up the place… and find their HEA while they are at it!
Our ex- SEAL Parker has been straight (!?!) all his life, and he’s so grumpy his own sister has nicknamed him Officer Grumpypants! Until he meets the sunshine-y, super cute, bubble-tea-shop owner Hwanchan, who effectively turns his entire life upside down!
With unknown forces threatening Hwan’s shop, Parker steps up to protect him, and they soon find they have more in common than what they would have thought!
Lovely start to a new series, with Rhys’s always engaging writing stile and steaminess and action balancing ion a great mix!

We start out with Parker who has been having a time of it lately with well, everything! He is in Mayberry now trying to start over. Loved his first encounter with absolutely adorable Hwan! This story instantly had me wanting so much love for both of these guys! Yes, Parker was grumpy but for realistic reasons, so I enjoyed his thoughts and reactions to sparkly happy Hwan. I enjoyed watching their banter and oppositeness bring them together. Hwan will make you feel so happy and smiley inside because he is a genuinely sweet person. And underneath it all you just know Parker is for him. I read an arc and if you love super sweet guys getting their stubborn man you will want to read this one. Wonderful first romance for this series.

Mother Parker is an excellent read, one of those that you’ll want to cozy up with a coffee/tea and read nonstop. Parker is the perfect grumpy to Hwan’s sunshine! Parker feels like a failure, he’s come to Mayberry Holm to start over. Hwan is sweet, pure shine with an outrageous bubbly personality. He doesn’t let anything get him down. When his new bubble tea shop is victimized, Parker steps in to help. I loved Hwan, seriously adored him! I just wanted to smack Parker at times, he was sooo freakin grumpy!! Overall, a fantastic read that is well written with great pacing!

There were some good elements in this story, but the execution lacked for me. The only reason I kept reading was Hwan and the suspense plot. Hwan delivered (I did not like Parker a whole lot- his character wasn’t deep enough imo) but the plot wasn’t very suspenseful.
I will try the next book because I’m curious about Joey!

Felt like I was propelled into an established world

My first Rhys Everly book and it was a bit like the Twilight Zone. Bombarded with characters that I felt I ought to already know, a world where so much was mentioned but no explanation given (again as though it had already been established that the characters were a covert crime fighting force to combat all the criminal activities on the island that I had no knowledge of), I was swimming against the tide from the beginning.
Despite that, it wasn't all doom and gloom. I liked the idea of the island and I liked the characters of Hwan and Parker together, and I will definitely read more about Mayberry Holm.
I loved Hwan as a character even though he was very naïve about what was happening to his shop, his pride and joy. The only thoughts in his head were bubble tea and how to climb Parker like a tree and then sigh because he has no time for love.
Parker was a bit annoying because all he ever did was moan about how he managed to ruin things. For a Navy Seal, he was filled with doubt and angst, and don't get me started about drowning in debt without once taking a breath to question things.
The saving grace was Hwan's grandmother and their little flock.
The mystery was good but that wasn't properly resolved, not enough for my liking.
Before writing this, I noticed in another review that there is a free prequel that I didn't know about, which I'm now going to have to read. It may shed more light on all the things I thought I should know but nowhere did I see anything that pointed me to that prequel before I started reading this. Sometimes authors get in their own way and it only harms them.

I enjoyed this sweet, low angst, opposites attract story. The characters hooked me in immediately, I loved the setting and set-up, and I’m looking forward to more books in the series.

Mayberry Holm is a character in its own right. The island is an interesting place full of quirky characters and very easy to visualise. I loved that a group of retired SEALs have settled there, and how their friendships and relationships are already changing and growing.

Poor Parker thinks he’s unlovable although he’s anything but. I thought the author did a good job in slowly revealing the true story behind his gruff persona, failed relationships, and the burdens he carries. I loved Hwan and his outlook on life, despite what he’s been through. His enthusiasm and passion for his bubble tea is contagious and I wanted some after reading the story.

I loved the found family vibe of the ex-SEALs and how they have each other’s backs. Autumn, Parker’s sister, is wonderful, and Halmeoni, Hwan’s grandmother is a hoot. I’d like to see more of Parker’s brother Camden, and Linc. And the Golden Girls are wonderful and perfectly named.

I enjoyed the crime part of the story although I guessed early on who the ‘inside’ guy was. Loved the showdown with the bad guys. Hwan totally rocks.

I thought it was just me until I read the review from "M Marshall" on Amazon (check it out -- I completely agree, but didn't want to repeat everything they said).

I kept feeling like I was missing something. I even looked at the author's previously released books to see if there was another story mentioning Asher or Wyatt. Once I read the other review, I discovered there WAS a #0.5, (which I have as part of the YBB freebies in 2022) but I have not read it yet. The author mentions several events from the prequel story, but then I was confused as to what "a forfeiting couple" was in relation to money, and think maybe they meant a couple of people were "counterfeiting" money.

Everyone is yelling and shouting at each other throughout; it was quite off-putting. I felt myself disconnecting from the story because of it. I think the only ones I liked were the crows.

I received an ARC in exchange for a review. Other than the "forfeiting" issue, I didn't note any other proofreading problems.

This was a good start to a new series with ex military men and an island of locals just loving life, and bubble tea of course. For the most part I enjoyed this read and I do think I'll continue with the series. Mainly because who it is about intrigues me. Mother Parker had some really good and sweet moments while some moments threw me a bit. I liked the characters and their connection and maybe it was just the way some scenes were set up or not for that matter, that had me having a little trouble feeling really in the story. The biggest thing was I enjoyed the characters and thought their love was hard fought and really sweet at times. It was however missing that little bit of edge. I think the edge we did get was the little bit of suspense but somewhat missed the mark for me.

I had some trouble rating this due to the fact that I really loved Hwan, he was a sweetheart and a hard worker who deserved all the good things. His budding bubble tea shop is not doing so hot but that is not for lack of trying or lack of heart. Trouble seems to be finding Hwan and he just wants to sweep it under the rug and not worry about little things like his shop door window being smashed to bits by a rock. He is ignoring signs and hoping for the universe to help him out. I felt for him but also was mad at the same time that it took so much for him to see the light. But first and foremost he made this story for me. I loved his ethnicity being Korean American, the size difference of the characters, Hwan being the much smaller of the two and to top it off is always wearing these fun colorful wigs to really make him shine. He was truly his own person and too nice for his own good. And he loved his little, grandmother, his Halmeoni, and their relationship, SO sweet. And the crows which I had mixed feelings about but where very important to Hwan and Halmeoni. They were cute but also the scenes they were in I was lost a bit. Maybe that was me. But the crows and Hwan's relationship with them was how Parker was introduced into Hwan's orbit. Birdseed shower for the Grumpy stranger and Hwan was instantly drawn into the big, giant man he wanted to climb.

And that will be the last time I call Parker, our second MC, 'Grumpy' since he was called that WAY too much by his so called friends and family in this book. Parker is just starting his new single life on an island he really does not want much to do with. It is clear he has some sadness and some depressive thoughts of himself but I did try to focus on his good rather than the bad everyone else seemed to focus on, except sweet Hwan of course. Parker is ex-military and you can't un-train a trained soldier so yes he walks around stone faced and hulking but he also has a lot of self doubt and is working through some personal issues. His military buddies and sister have swayed him to come join them in their quest to fight crime in this hidden crime stopper organization on this little island and he wants to make himself useful while staying mostly in the shadows. Yes Parker had some qualities and actions that made my head spin but he is Hwan's story together was the highlight.

Complete opposites attract with sweet bubble tea moments were in no shortage in this book. I liked how they both see the world differently and had such different lifestyles. I loved how Hwan was on a mission to win Parker over with his bubble tea and I loved how protective Parker was. The chemistry was just okay for me though and some of the intimate scenes I had trouble getting into. Plus the sex started happening at an appropriate time in the book but felt was too quick when it came to where they where in their relationship considering this was Parkers first time. I think this is preference but to me if felt like the relationship was building well and then all of a sudden shoved hard into all the way. I did love how they where sweet and honest with each other. If all we got were these two I think I would have liked this book more.

When I started reading I felt really lost. I felt like I was in an already established world and did not realize there was a short story before this for two of the supporting characters. To me this should not NEED to be read in order to start a new series as this is the first official book and I truly feel like it was necessary to feel comfortable with the way all the supporting characters communicated. And for me the plot was sort of weak but had a lot of promise if maybe a few things were done differently? Not sure exactly and I hate to pretend I would know how to make a story better. These things for sure was why I had trouble rating and settled on my 3 star when I did really enjoy the writing.

I think I will continue with this series and hope we get a promising second book to enjoy!

enjoyed some elements, had issues with missing foundation

Rating: 3.25🌈

Mother Parker , a new contemporary suspense romance novel and first in a new series by Rhys Everly, gave me several aspects I liked about the story and several I thought about that made me think potentially this was not going to be a series for me.

The aspects I liked about it was the multiculturalism. Hwan and his Halmeoni, grandmother in Korean, are the the more interesting and layered characters here. Every part of their interactions and relationship is flavored with the depth of their culture by way of the wonderful Korean foods and teas. They meet for lunch and Halmeoni is drinking her cup of boricha.

And it will gently be explained that it contains a sweet nuttiness of roasted barley. Bibimbap, kimchi , and other dishes make scattered appearances. It’s a delight as is Hwan’s shop, Bubble Bubble: Bubble Tea and Beverage Shop.

Bubble tea is explained in detail too for those unfamiliar with the beverage. It’s Hwan’s passion as is making his business successful.

His other companions are the crows that adopted him and his grandmother that are named after the Golden Girls. A fun element.

It’s with the other main character that drags the story. Parker Hawkins, ex SEAL, restarting his life after a divorce. That and the whole island element.

First Parker.

His almost endless litany of “woe is me, what an unlovable idiot I am” of inflicted wounds is not only tiresome but off putting. Add to that a combative, non communicative nature and a inability initially to see anyone else’s perspective, and I can say the description Officer Grumpypants wouldn’t be the first things I’d think of calling him. Although it’s the nicest, least accurate.

As one of the two narrators, I found him almost impossible to connect with, especially as he yelled, stomped, insulted, argued his way into and across his way and people who got him a fresh start in life.

The author’s intent is that we’re supposed to find Parker Hawkins attractive and think fondly of “Officer Grumpypants”? Because, at least in my case, the answer is no.

Even his “redemption “ rests in the author’s placing a sort of blame on Parker’s ex’s who in the author’s storylines withstood the same appalling behavior, had a house sold out from under one, and no communication. Only to have Hwan say in a scene obviously they didn’t love Parker enough.

That’s very misogynistic. Especially as Parker’s figured out he’s gay. I always appreciate it when a author doesn’t blame the ex, but takes another route with respect towards new sexuality and self determination.
Wish that had happened here.

Then there’s a lack of background or history about the town’s criminal elements, the background the ex SEAL s have with cleaning up the small town, and potential corrupt police force. None of that is explained here. So zero background info on The Outpost owned by former SEAL CO Wyatt Goodman, staffed by Maddox Shepherd and Asher Ford, a new couple and ex SEALs, dog Biscuit and Parker’s sister, Autumn.

Apparently one of the new couple was straight but Shep “ turned” him gay. Or comments to that effect. Several borderline offensive issues here.

- [ ] Then there’s a instant love factor that negates, narratively speaking, a strong character trait of Hwan’s. He’s almost obsessed with his shop and it’s success. Yet when things like , idk, clearly criminal activity happens to his shop , he acts as though it’s nothing. Totally out of character for a man who then acts as he does later on.
- [ ] It’s called consistency and continuity. Missing here.

Once I finished the book, there was still areas I felt were left so lacking. And I didn’t feel any real need to go further into understanding them or requiring more from these characters.

I also looked around and found a prequel for the series. It may contain some universe building but I’m not going there.

If you’re a fan of this author, I’m listing both below for your use:

Mayberry Protectors :
- [ ] Forever Asher #0.5
- [x] Mother Parker #1

Independent reviewer for Gay Romance Reviews, I was gifted my copy of this book.

What this is, right, is a whole lotta warm and fuzzies, with a side of too stinking cute all poured into a gallon of bubble tea that makes me wanna go right out and try some of the combinations here, cos I never did before!

Just like I never did a Rhys Everly book and I'm so sorry that it's taken me this long to actualy read cos this was so bloody good!

I read, right before this one, a very dark and deadly book, and this one, while there is some drama with someone trying to force Hwan out of the shop, is right at the opposite end of the scale to that book and they were both so bloody good!

Parker takes a job with his friends after his life implodes. He won't ever be able to find The One for him, she doesn't exist. Getting bird seed thrown at his head should have given him an inkling that things would be different here. And so very different they are, since Hwan is a he and Parker is straight, right?

I loved that parker's sister makes him see, really SEE himself, and just what has been missing all his life. It's not that perfect woman, it's Hwan. And for Hwan, parker is all kinds of pushing his buttons and then some, cos that man is hawt as all get out for Hwan.

Both men carry some baggage and it takes a while for it all to come out, quite literally. And I loved being made to wait for it.

It's steamy and hawt, but equally, emotional and difficult in places.

The supporting cast is great, Hwan's grandma is awesome! But the one who stands out of them all, and there are a lot of them, is Joey. Cos no one likes Joey and they said some nasty things about him here, and I get the feeling that all is not what it seems, and when they all find out the truth, and they WILL cos Joey gets the next book, those guys is gonna have to eat some crow, big time.

Thank you, Rhys, for the introduction into your book world, my wish list just got a lot longer!

5 warm and fuzzies, so stinking cute stars

A good start to a new series from this author. I like the premise of Navy SEALS retiring to an island but to make it safe again, adds a bit of a danger element.
Parker moves there after the end of his marriage, feeling very down on his luck and low in general, hoping to help his friends out and pick himself up. Hwan is someone he could have never foreseen coming his way, styled with his colourful wigs and love for his bubble tea shop. It took me a while to warm up to Parker. I think he's just become this generally standoffish, down beat guy but it also makes him a little unrelatable. Hwan is his total opposite with his sunshine attitude, even in the face of what he goes through. There's a bit of drama for Hwan and in order to protect and look out for him, Parker works at the shop for him. However, all of that contact leads to Parker asking some questions of himself, having only ever been attracted to women before. When it comes to the romance element, I'd say it's a slow burn until about half when and then it's like a switch is flipped and it's all systems go. I was surprised with how quick the transition was and how things progress for the two happiness and a person that loves them for themselves. I really enjoyed the relationship they build, they have a lot of fun together as well as plenty of heated moments.
There's a lot of support characters that bring humour, friendship and support to the story and I liked the family element as well. Parker has the chance to reconnect with his siblings and Hwan's grandmother is quite the character, everyone needs one of her. Also, the golden girls make an appearance in a brilliant way. The plot of the story was interesting, bringing an element of drama and danger to things. I'm interested to see how that progresses moving forward through the series.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

The premise of this story was promising and I thought I’d like it - it seemed to be on the sweet side with a little action / mystery going on, but I ended up struggling quite a bit with this one.

This was a confusing read for me, it really felt like I got thrown into the middle of a series. Characters appeared without proper introductions, the island is apparently riddled with crime but there’s no background provided, and there was very little info on Parker’s time as a SEAL or his family. After I finished this one I did find a prequel, I haven’t read it so not sure if it provides the info I was missing, but if you want to read this one I’d recommend looking into it.

I did like the plot, the mystery and suspense part was well written and fit the story even if it escalated a little too much towards the end. Since Parker was meant to protect Hwan it also put them in close proximity to each other which moved their romance along.

Hwan was the best part of the story in my opinion, he was such a bubbly and happy character and I just adored him. He was super passionate about his bubble tea shop and his PoV was a lot of fun to read. Parker, on the other hand, was a really hard character to connect to and I got sort of fed up with his whining and grumpiness. I usually love the grumpy / sunshine trope, but to me Parker was mostly just unlikeable. It might have been due to the lack of background and context, since there were very little revealed about his history.

Sadly not a hit for me, but if you enjoy extra grumpy characters, a little bit of instant feelings / love with some suspense added, you might enjoy this one - just remember to check out the prequel first.

Nice story. Parker, is having a very bad year. Like, if it can go wrong, it does in spades! Like, how much can one person take and still stay sane? How can a person, not feel grumpy when the only luck, is bad luck? He turns to his old SEAL's boss, Wyatt for help finding a job. Hwan, recently opened his lifelong dream, a bubble tea shop. Blanche, Sophia and Rose, the crows that adoped him and his GrandMa, Halmeoni, are a hoot! Hwan is a bit lonely as the only Korean gay man on the island. The Community culturally insulate themselves. Parker is letting his lack of good luck define his personality. When he and Kwan start working together, they are complete opposites working to find their balance. Parker struggles with his new feelings for Kwan and trying to work through his new identity. Can Kwan get Parker to like his teas? Will Parker embrace his feelings for Kwan? Will Kwan's tea shop finally take off? Will Parker loose his grump? Will Parker be able to protect Kwan? I struggle to like Parker. He doesn't seem to have the perception to be a SEAL. The story, the theme has a good idea, exciting. I look forward to reading about the family and fellow SEALs. Nicely done. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.

🌈Good story, fun characters & some danger to spice things up!

4-4.5🌟 stars
This MM opposites attract romance had a number of elements that I really liked, including:

A sense of humor (I mean, a lovable lead who's adopted by crows that he decides to name after the Golden Girls and a bad cook who assumes practice makes perfect, despite plenty of proof to the contrary!😏);

A bit of adversity and skullduggery with a mystery to solve related to local crime and incidents aimed at Hwan's bubble tea shop;

Plenty of hot, steamy times for shopkeeper Hwan and Parker, his temporary protector who openly acknowledges his attraction to men for the first time;

and
Some solid secondary characters, particularly Hwan's wise grandmother and Parker's sister Autumn.

I also liked the backstory Everly created for Parker and Hwan, two guys who have had some bad breaks they need to get past. And Hwan's passion for bubble tea, so integrally attached to his memories of his mother, was inspiring.

I am looking forward to more in the series with this ensemble of characters.

I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

This book includes one of the grumpiest characters I have ever met in a book that was as light as this book. But somehow, Rhys Everly made it work. Well, Hwan made it work, but the author has to get some kind of credit, right? Ha!

To be fair to Parker, he has reasons behind why he's so grumpy, but his character is one that is going to have to grow on you unless you are an empathic person by nature. Show him some patience and you will see the man that his siblings and friends do. Have a little faith, and you will see the softer side of him come out. He's just got some deeply internalized demons to fight first.

Everly has a way of writing fun characters and bringing some levity to just about every situation. Sometimes, you just need to laugh. With this book, you will encounter the Golden Girls as you've never seen before, and you will learn more about bubble tea than you thought you ever would. Neither things are unpleasant.

This is a fun read and is bound to entertain you and leave you ready for the next book. Until then...happy reading!

This book was gifted to me for my reading pleasure, but the above opinions are 100% mine.

This is a new series by Rhys Everly and it's a great beginning. It is the first book; however, I do recommend reading the novella Forever Asher since it sets up this series. There's humor, action/suspense, interesting and well developed characters, and steam.
I'm not gonna lie, it did take me a bit to warm up to Parker. He was such a grump and a downer. But stick with him, he definitely wiggles into your heart with the help of Mr Smiley Sunshine aka Hwan, which I instantly fell in love with. I mean who wouldn't, he named his crows after the Golden Girls 😁. He saw Parker's sweetness that he kept hidden...way deep hidden, lol. Hwan is exactly what Parker needed to acknowledge a few things he had refused to face (some family can really be sucky sometimes). Hwan always has a smile on his face but hides a scarred heart that finally finds some healing. There's also the mystery of who is threatening Hwan and his business, adding some suspense and action to the story.
I can't wait to read the next book and find out what the deal with Joe is...hmmm...

Like I said in other reviews, I’m a huge sucker for small town type of M/M stories! There are couple of tropes in this one. Grumpy/Sunshine, Age Gap, muscle/somewhat a twink, and straight/gay are the tropes in this one. I enjoyed reading this one very much! I couldn’t help but love Hwan! He’s one adorable character!!!! I’ve come to love Parker later on because he was a GRUMPY!!!!

This particular story focuses on Parker, the grumpy guy who had to try to come to terms with the ending of his marriage in addition to dealing with his parents’ estate which left him without money and getting back in better grace with his younger sister and brother. He ended up in Mayberry Holm where his army superior was living and hired him to “babysit” Hwan, a cute Korean guy who owns the “Bubble Tea” store because his store kept getting vandalized and all that. How does Parker fall for Hwan and did they ever find out who vandalized the store…that’s for you to pick up the book and read it. I’d give it 5 stars!

Enjoyable 3.75 stars.

Parker is such a grumpy grump and ends up on Mayberry Holm when his life implodes. Hwan is a bubbly, sweet, full of sunshine guy who has just opened his Bubble Tea store. Their first meeting certainly does leave an impression, good from Hwan’s viewpoint but not so much from Parker’s.
Circumstances have Parker assisting Hwan at the store where they finally get to know one another and find themselves enjoying each other’s company which does lead to some smexy times.

This enjoyable read includes Bubble tea flavours galore, references to the Golden Girls, a hint of suspense, a dash of angst and two main characters finding their place in the world and their HEA. We are also given a sneak peek at the main character for the next in the series.

I did feel at the beginning that I was missing some backstory and then realised that the novella Forever Asher is a prequel and sets up the series.

I would recommend reading the prequel from the YBBB promo first. This is sweet angsty book of opposites attracting. Hwan has a outgoing cheery personality and has just opened his dream Bubble tea shop in tribute to his deceased mother and Parker has recently arrived to the island after separating form the Navy Seals and a recent divorce. Hwan feels he does't have time for love, and Parker feels he doesn't deserve love and is known by his friends and Mr. Grumpyface which just makes him grumpier. His old SEAL commander has him working at Swan shop to protect Hwan after is door is smashed. They are each fascinated by each other but Parker has never been in a relationship with a man and has to come to terms with those feelings. Once he does, their relationship quickly progresses but the mystery of who is sabotaging Hwan's tea shop has to be solved. Looking forwards to reading Joey's story next.
