I'll probably keep reading but....

I need there to be what, in my opinion, I feel is an honest review on this book. It had some fun parts, funny parts and parts where I was routing for someone to smack Jackson Pryde as hard as they possibly could. I felt like the romance was 0 to 100 and back to 0. I was getting whiplash and couldn't really get into the intense affection of it all. I felt like the romantic bond was flimsy at best and way too intense for something that lacked any real build up. I love a good enemies to lovers but this was... whoa. Jack needs counseling... probably. He is at the same time very proud of himself and very irrationally angry at feeling looked down upon. I love a good scrappy main but I couldn't relate to him at all. Even his more sincere emotions were knee jerk. His abilities or lack there of is foggy. I am hopeful that the future books continue to flesh things out but at the same time I wanted to slam my head into my desk at certain points so its a solid maybe as to if I will keep reading. The world building was interesting but the storyline wasn't great. I am also hoping that the plot arc of the first book is just a launch pad to a much more flushed out and complex narrative.

The police are a-holes. Society is predigested. I have not met Xander's parents but I am also routing for them to be slapped as hard a s someone could manage.

I loved it!

This was such a fun reading! From the very beginning I knew I was going to enjoy this what with a four hundred pound's gryphon, the banter and the picnic :P

I loved being into Jackson Pryd's head, I loved his voice, his dry humour and his self-awareness. But, TBH, the whole thing is just great: the world-building is fantastic, the setting beautifully detailed, the characters interesting and three-dimensional and the plot comes to a wonderfully well-crafted ending.

Jack and Xander's relationship is another selling point. They were best friends as kids, but Xander's magic lead him from a different trail and the pain left by that separation is still raw:
“When did I ever say that you were less than?” Xander shouted. “When have I ever said that to you?”

“You said it when you left me behind,” I shouted back. I looked down at my hands, surprised at my own anger, surprised to see myself trembling. “You said it when you came home on holidays and never so much as said a word to me. You said it when we stopped being friends.”

But hey! they have Zephyr, the gryphon helping them, so nothing can go wrong, right? *laughs*

Seriously, though, I really liked they didn't fall into each other's arms by page 3, that they had to talk and fix what was broken between them.

What can I say? I loved it and I want the next book NOW! :D

Oh! And Zachary Johnson's narration was fabulous!

Sweet, entertaining and unexpectedly hot

At first, I thought the reconciliation between Jackson and Xander came too easily. I thought, if they are this mature, how come they haven't worked it out sooner? But then the story gained more depth, and I was all in. I loved the side characters, both good and bad. I loved how Jackson is both shallow and deep, how he happily flexes his muscles in the mirror any hour of the day yet never hesitates to help when he's needed. I was really touched when he remembered stopping crying because it stopped helping. It made me remember such times in my own life. I would have liked to hear from Xander's perspective a few times, but all in all this was a great book and I highly recommend.

A Brilliantly Fascinating Story & Narration🎧

I enjoyed this book immensely, it is my first written by Nazri Noor and he has an impressive writing style and a fabulously creative mind, he created a fascinating story with imaginative characters that are likable, easy to relate to and connect with. The character development and world building is phenomenal. His descriptive details bring you in to the story right alongside the characters, allowing you to see what they are seeing, feeling and thinking. This book drew me in with that exciting first scene, grabbing my attention and then holding it straight to the end. Jackson Pryde is an artificer living in a magical world, he is not a mage and does not have power at his fingertips as they do but he is an inventor and maker of magical artifacts and he is working on a gauntlet, a device that would amplify the tiny bits of magical fuel that is held in his body. Unfortunately, he is a long way off from any brilliant invention, but that does not stop him from trying, especially since it would restore much needed honor to the artificer’s guild. He makes ends meet by selling things like gryphon feathers and taking odd jobs, including the ones he gets to work with his once friend, now enemy Xander Wright but we learn quickly that there is great chemistry between these two and they still harbored feelings for each other. The two worked well together and continued to work together after that and their relationship starts to heat up. I loved how everything played out in this cleverly plotted and action packed story, the author masters several different genres and balances them well, the witty dialogue was amazing too. There is never a dull moment in this book, there is plenty of drama, a touch of angst, humor, some mystery, thrilling suspense, heartfelt and emotional moments and a sweet romance. There are some great secondary characters in this book, my favorite being Zephyr, the gryphon, loved what came out of his mouth, including son of Jack. Nazri Noor, thank you for this wonderfully entertaining story.

🎧📚🎧 And for the amazing narration, Nazri Noor could not have cast a better narrator to bring his story and characters to life. Zachary Johnson is a talented narrator and a versatile voice artist. His character voices are amazing, he has a complete understanding of each character he portrays, gives them a voice that fits that character’s persona to a tee, sounds believable in every role he plays and just as I pictured the character to sound. He sets the perfect tone for the story, handles the humor and witty back-and-forth dialogue with ease without missing a beat. He captures all the characters’ emotions and projects them into his performance. Zachary Johnson is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another exceptional listen.

What a surprise!

I love Nazri Noor’s books, and I was hesitant about this one. But I can’t describe how much this book caught me off guard in all the best ways. This felt so different than all the other series he’s written, while still existing in the same universe. This book expands the world building exponentially. And may I say… Nazri… sex scenes?? What?!?! That was one of the hottest scenes I’ve ever read! Who knew?! So much tension and so much passion! Just wow!

So good

Ok I love this story. Yeah, there's romance but there's actual plot. You can tell there's more to the series so I'm really excited for that. And this is a unique modern fantasy world that you get to learn about slowly in stead of all at once in a boring glob of information. There's a Gryffin and magic and science and portals and good food. Sounds like the place to be.

The narration was also great. Each character had their own voice and attitude which was well portrayed with great inflections and cadence.

Honestly I wasn't expecting it to be as cute and exciting as it was. I just wanted the story to keep going and I can't wait for the next one.

More than a touch of perfection!

What an amazing ride this book was!

I adore Jack & his insecurities made him so relatable. His snark and humor are so on point. I enjoyed seeing the Black Market, the different “edges” of it, through his eyes. His descriptions are colorful peppered with humor.

The world-building in this story is excellently done. The characters are fleshed out. Distinct in their own way & the narrator did a fine job of portraying that on audio as well.

Whenever I listen to stories with a nod to some authentic cultural reference, it makes me love the book a little bit more. Jack had me at his enjoyment of pan de coco. 💙

Zachary Johnson’s narration gave this story a whole new level of enjoyment.

If you’re a fan of urban fantasy stories, magic, romance, plot twists, remarkable characters, then this one is for you.

I can imagine fans of Haily Turner, Ava Marie Salinger, Richard Amos to enjoy this one.

Five arcane powered stars and then some!
