Protection of the Pack: An urban fantasy novel (The Other Wolf Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 3,276 ratings

I have a wolf in my head. Her name is Esme, and she likes killing things.

I’m Lucy, a regular accountant turned alpha werewolf. A tryst with the wrong incubus ripped me from my ordinary life and sent me tumbling into a magical realm that I'd never even dreamed existed.

I was just adjusting to pack life when I was asked to mercy-kill the current alpha. I'm not a total bitch so I did what he asked, but it's left me as alpha of a pack I don't know, full of werewolves who resent that I still live and breathe while their old alpha doesn't. If I’m to survive in this dog-eat-dog realm, I’m going to have to win my new pack over – and fast.

I'm still trying to find my way in this violent new world when my third in command, Mark, is brutally murdered right under my damn nose. To regain control of the pack, I need to find the killer and bring him to vigilante justice. Luckily, my wolf, Esme, is more than happy to get her paws dirty.

When the werewolf council show up to question me, things get a little dicey. Thank goodness I have the deadly Greg Manners, former dragon brethren and general ass-kicker, to back me up. Now I just need to unravel who'd want to kill Mark – and there’s a really long list of suspects because he was shadier than an oak tree.

I'm hip-deep in suspects, and I need to move swiftly – before the killer strikes again...

Burn through this fun, fast-paced, laugh-out-loud mix of urban fantasy and mystery.

This is the first book in the Other Wolf series. Don't miss this internationally best-selling series if you like humour, heart, a strong heroine and a slow burn fade-to-black romance.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Heather Harris is hands down one of my favourite writers. I love everything about her books and am just a little bit jealous of anyone who gets to read her for the first time." - Charles de Lint, best-selling author of the Newford Series (writing for Fantasy and Science Fiction magazine).

"Heather G. Harris has a marvellous voice and a great world. If you like Urban Fantasy, in the realm of Patricia Briggs' Mercedes Thompson, or Seanan McGuire's October Daye series, you should check her work out!"
- Todd McCaffrey, best-selling author of the Dragonriders of Pern series.

"Heather G Harris is an author of spectacular and quite unusual talent: no matter what subject or scene, you're all-in, totally engrossed, white-knuckling your book all the way to the end. Every new book from her feels like a visit from your best friend, a wild ride, outrageously funny, saucy, comforting and dramatic all at the same time. This is gold standard Urban Fantasy. Five stars, bring on the next one!" -
Lauretta Hignett, best-selling author of the Imogen Grey series.

"Heather G Harris has created a unique world with dragons, wizards, vampires, shifters and more, all living together in fragile harmony. She creates characters that resonate, characters I can root for, and I find myself thinking about them long after I close the book. The Other Realm series got me excited about Urban Fantasy all over again, and Harris has been added to my short list of authors who are automatic buys for me."
- Kim McDougall, best-selling author of the Valkyrie Bestiary series.

"I love Heather G. Harris's novels. Heather is a storytelling genius, and her books are truly magical!" -
Brogan Thomas, best-selling author of the Creatures of the Otherworld series.

Protection of the Pack is the spin-off series from ‘The Other Realm’ in which we learned about Jessica ‘Jinx’ Sharp. In the Other Wolf series, we follow Jinx’s best friend Luciana ‘Lucy’ Barrett, who was turned into a Werewolf in Book #3 of the Other Realm series, and during that series, she had to kill the Alpha of the Home Counties Pack, Lord Wilfred Samuel. When she killed him, she became the new Alpha of the pack, which was actually Lord Samuel’s aim, he wanted someone he could trust to lead his pack.
But poor Lucy has only been a werewolf for a few weeks, and only known about the Other Realm for the same period, so is basically clueless on how everything is run. Now, she is expected to not only learn how to be a Werewolf, but run an entire Pack. To make things even more interesting, when she was created as a werewolf, she was stabbed with the magical dagger Glimmer, that passed onto her the abilities of a Piper. Piper’s have the power to speak with animals, to control them. Nearly all werewolf/human relationships are one of dominance. When a werewolf is made, a Human gets a ’wolf’ – so that two entities live inside the same body, the human and the wolf. When in human form, the human has control. However, when they shift to wolf form, the wolf can take control, and if they do, the wolf can take control, and if they do, they won’t ever give control back to the human.
However, for Lucy, she can speak to her wolf – Esme – and they are friends, something that has never happened before. And when they change (which is almost instantaneous, again, something that has never been heard of before), Lucy gives Esme control, knowing Esme will give control back as they have a loving relationship. Even better, Esme passes on useful information about Werewolf and Other Law to Lucy. There are also some of the funniest moments in the book when Esme asks Lucy so wonderful questions about human language that makes no sense to her. They leave you on the floor in tears.
Book 1 is a multitude of different things, it is an introduction to Lucy’s story, as we get to meet her, and how she gets set up with the pack. We get to meet Esme, and are introduced to her abilities. There is not just Lucy in this book, but Greg Manners from the Other Realm has also been turned into a werewolf, and has become Lucy’s Second – vowing to be her bodyguard, and loyal lieutenant in the Home Counties Pack. We already know that Manners is a walking weapon from The Other Realm series, but now, he is even more dangerous as he is a werewolf as well. There are some brilliant moments between Lucy and Manners as they adjust to each other.
In the middle of all of this, someone kills the Packs former second, and someone who was one of Lucy’s biggest threats, Mark Oates – who everyone used to hate, but at the same time, he also had a couple of girlfriends in the pack. This unfolds into an intriguing mystery about who killed him, and why. As Lucy and Manners start to investigate, Connection Representations turn up from another Pack to investigate how Lucy was turned and why she is the new Alpha (as it seems suspicious – and it is suspicious about how she can turn so quickly). They also start to investigate the death of the Pack member.
What unfolds is a multi-layered and fascinating storyline that makes for a stunning debut story in this spin-off series. There is always that doubt if a series like this will work, but Lucy is such an amazing character, and with the addition of Esme (there banter is just hilarious and one of the highlights of this book), Manners, as well as several OTHER characters including Witches, Griffons, Dryads, not to mention multiple Werewolves, some we know and a bunch we don’t, this makes for wonderful read. Lucy’s character is so well done, as she struggles with all these new responsibilities, and the pressure of having to look after the entire pack. Lucy is a highly intelligent person, and learns quickly, but she is also smart enough to know how to delegate, and use the resources around her, and it is fascinating watching her learn her new role. Even more compelling is the wonderful portrayal of how she integrates with her new wolf. Esme is more than a friend, she is part of her, and the bond they have is so special. Harris has really captured this so well.
The character writing in this story is not only captivating but just exceptional, and really makes the story a standout.
Even if you haven’t read the Other Realm series, you can pick this up and read it as a new series, Harris has included enough detail for ‘new’ readers to the series. Regardless if you are new or continuing on from The Oher Realm, this is an absolute Must Read, it is just brilliant and was one of my favourite books I have read in the Urban Fantasy genre this year. Book 2 is just as good!!

The literal two-soul (or multiple personality) of wolf shifters caught my attention, then it turns out that no other wolf shifter can talk to their wolf spirit, and from there it was a matter of this overpowered (overachiever) protagonist doing things with great success.

She does build a good team, and puts in the emotional work to strengthen pack ties, so it’s not everyone falling over themselves to serve her.

It took me awhile to get into this story. This book was labeled as book 1, but it felt like it started in the middle of a story with a lot of events that had already happened. I'm guessing that this is a spinoff. I really liked Esme's character, so I'll definitely read book 2.

Absolutely packed with incredible characters- each is so very unique & none are boring, tons of action, mystery, drama! And the humor- I loved the snark of Lucy & her wolf Esme, their conversations are hilarious at times! It is a new series that follows 'The Other Realm' series - and while many series that follows leave you a bit lost - not this one! This one is ideal in letting you keep up & not feel like you missed something!! (Yes- I'm going to finish this series & the Other Realm series!! Fantastic writer!

This book takes place after Jinx has Lucy turned into a werewolf during “The Other Realm” series, and it is best to have read the first four books of that series before this one.
This book ends on a slight (2/5 on the trauma scale) cliffhanger, but the main story in this book is completed, and only the background tales are unfinished.

Lucy is getting used to sharing her life with Esme, her wolf, but being the alpha is taking a bit more effort. Just as she thinks she’s getting the hang of it all, her third in command is murdered, and Lucy has to investigate as alpha.
Mark wasn’t a particularly good person, so the number of enemies that could have done it is high, and it takes Lucy and her second, Greg, into some of Mark’s dark secrets…

By the time the book was done, I was kind of glad Mark was dead- the list of his misdeeds seems to grow the entire book! The mystery had some good twists and turns, making for an intriguing, but enjoyable read.
The absolute star of the book was most definitely Esme, she was an amusing breath of fresh air, and her questions made me laugh out loud more than once.
There was plenty of action, a hint of slow growing romance, with intrigue and mystery aplenty.
An entertaining and engrossing return to the Other that Jinx fans and urban fantasy lovers will enjoy.

Having finished the Glimmer series by the same author.( check them out, all 5 star reads) I discovered this series which is in the same universe but has a different main character.
Lucy is an accidental werewolf who through no desire of her own becomes the alpha of a werewolf pack. This book explores her struggles to prove to all that she is the alpha. There are bad characters trying to thwart her goals who Lucy has to deal with along the way.
The book is very well written and contains no typos. ( a bugaboo of mine!) The characters are super interesting and their actions and responses are believable in the context of the genre and story.
I recommend all of the books I have read by this author. Five star reads!
Now on to book 2. ( and I hope I have no typos in my review! Lol)
