One of these deaths is not like the others.

In New York City, the Met Gala is fashion’s biggest night out. Naturally, I wasn’t on the guest list.

Not one to let a little detail like that get in the way, I did what any good witch would; I gate crashed, but I wasn’t the only one.

Heavily armed thieves decided that New York socialites would make for easy pickings. The chaos that ensued left twenty-eight dead. It was a case the city wanted closed as quickly as possible.

But I was there, I know the truth. One of the victims wasn’t an accident, it was an assassination, and he was a sitting member of the Arcane Council.

Caught between the Council and Chief West, this case could cost me my job, my life, or both.

Rally behind Kasey as she faces her most dangerous foe yet in
Life Is for The Living.

I am a huge fan of this series and I will be getting any follow ups. I love the stories, the characters, I wish I had even a little piece of the author's imagination! I gave it the rating I did because of the ending. It's obvious the book was just split for a third segment. It would have been nice if the author had at least brought a little closure to the station getting shot up, like the reinforcements arriving, anything. Instead the mood felt too light to me with no resolution. Hope it's in the next book but it should have been in this one. Also, I don't remember much of anything about family in the first book but now she has a sister, nephew, and parents all within commuting range of NYC, all active in the story.
Minor grammatical errors, punctuation or missing words but easy to figure out. It's something I have noticed in most of the ebooks I've read though.

I can't recall when I read these 1st 2 books in the series...I may have even read one or two more...I'll find out soon. One highlight for me now versus the past: action sequences are clear--who is involved, how each moves through the building or alleyway. Writers under the influence of Halo or Call to Duty or whatever get so caught up giving minutiae, moving around from room to room and floors and quick cuts to nearby action. This is clear but certainly not boring.

When we last saw Kasey, she was recovering from a fight with a werewolf, and this story picks right up from there.
Kasey is a witness to a mass shooting, which was not everything it seemed.
Suddenly Kasey realizes that this case, and the previous one, might just be related.
An evil mastermind is behind everything, but can she find out who it is?
It’s not quite a cliffhanger ending, but the end of this book was very abrupt. One minute I’m reading a fight scene, then the book is done, set up for the next.
It’s probably my biggest complaint actually, the book was short, but not to worry, this is written in serial format- each story continuing on immediately from the previous. Now we are left wondering, how is Kasey going to stop her vision from happening? And who is the mysterious mastermind?
An enjoyable, quick read, but not a stand alone. Go read the first, before enjoying this one!

    2.5 - 3 stars

I borrowed this book through Kindle Unlimited.

I have very mixed opinions about this book.

Positives: Mr. Stokes has a solid, easy to read, enjoyable writing style. Everything reads smoothly. The pacing in book 2 has improved from book 1. The premise of this book is interesting (even if it's not very original).

Negatives: the characters are flat. I'd hoped to see more character development in Kasey, Bishop, and Vida (who is by far my favorite character), but, unfortunately, there was not. Kasey has not matured or developed after the dangers of her previous case (granted, book 2 starts the day after book 1 ends) but is still a complete idiot. Bishop, supposedly skilled enough to be a homicide detective in NYC, is completely unbelievable as a character. Both of these characters would have been fired numerous times over for their actions. Also, the editing has gone from decent in book 1 to poor in book 2.

Conclusions: do I still want to read book 3? Yes. However, if Kasey remains the complete idiot TSTL, I don't see myself reading much past that.

5.0 out of 5 stars It All Starts With A Jewellery Heist
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 16, 2021
I’d probably give this book 4.5 ⭐️ if I could.

This is the second book in the series, if you exclude the prequel which isn’t needed to understand the story arc. This book won’t make much sense if you don’t read the book before it in the series and whilst the book ends on a cliffhanger, the end of the book happens at a natural break in the story.

This book starts the day after the first book ends. When Kasey learns that Arthur Ainsley is going to be attending the Met Gala she is determined to crash it to demand he gets his son to drop his lawsuit as was promised to her if she managed to kill the werewolf serial killer and make his body disappear. When she arrives it quickly degenerates into mayhem as armed and masked men arrive to take advantage of all the priceless family heirlooms being worn for the occasion.

What at first look appears to be a huge jewellery heist gone wrong, turns out to have a connection to the magic world. Once again Kasey finds herself being drawn into a case that has much bigger reverberations than initially suspected.

The plot in this book is really good. It ratchets up the tension of the first book and just keeps going. I love how the current cases are woven into the larger plot again. It helps to bring a conclusion to each book, whilst still making you really want to read the next book.

We also get to see a little more of Kasey’s relationship with her parents. Not much, but a glimpse. I wish we could see more as I feel that is the area that is most lacking in this series, the character development. I do have hopes we will see more in the next book.

Kasey’s professional standing does seem to become a little vulnerable in this book as she tries to juggle the magic and the ‘normal’ world. It will be interesting to see how that gets resolved.

I can’t wait to read the next book because I’m desperate to know what happens next.

Ye gods and little fishes!!! That was a total blast! I found this series as I scrolled through pages pulled up as I checked out another author. To think that sheer chance found this treasure. AND there are another four books of wonderful flowing prose to come. I already have book three and fully intend to go all the way and discover where the heroine is fated to end her battle to save the city. I'm not prescient so will have to just get comfy with a cuppa and settle in for winter to find out.
