Publisher's summary

It's the end of the world as we know it, but someone still needs to do the paperwork.

Incomprehensible horrors from beyond are going to devour our world, but that’s no excuse to get all emotional about it.

Morag Murray works for the secret government organization responsible for making sure the apocalypse goes as smoothly and as quietly as possible. In her first week on the job, Morag has to hunt down a man-eating starfish, solve a supernatural murder, and, if she's got time, prevent her own inevitable death.

Oddjobs is a sideswipe at the world of work and a fantastical adventure featuring amphibian wannabe gangstas, mad old cat ladies, ancient gods, apocalyptic scrabble, fish porn, telepathic curry, and, possibly, the end of the world before the weekend.

The end is nigh! Ish.

Take Lovecraft. Remove the despair, the horror, and dreadful atmosphere. Add strong characters, lots of bureaucracy, good humor (not Pratchett by any means, but at least Asprin). Multiply by satiric denigration of government machines, police procedures, monster hunting, etc.
What you get is a highly enjoyable, tongue-in-cheek (and sometimes half-a-meter-out-of-mouth) book about... us.

A word of caution about the performance. The deep English (Scottish?) accent of one or two characters required a lot of rewinding on my part, at least at first. And the author's insistence in pronouncing the demon names properly left his throat and my ears properly, nay, demonically raw.

I was prepared to not like this book...

Unfortunately I've purchased a string of books that sounded good, started good, but then fell apart and disappointed. I had pretty much prepared myself that this book would probably be the same. But nope! I enjoyed the entire book. It had an absurdity that I loved. In a way it reminded me of Yahtzee Crowshaw books. It held my interest and made me laugh out loud several times.

I will definitely purchase the follow on book, and hope there will be more to come.

Different

like a Terry Pratchett rewrite of the Laundry Files. I hope the narrator's throat recovers quickly.

I have no mouth, Matt Davies's screams

Funny, sardonic. Enjoyable to sci-fi horror comedy fans.
The narrator chooses to pronounce the names of the cosmic horrors in a jarring way that can only be intentionally unpleasant. It suits to emphasize the "otherness" of the Elder Things, but can also be pretty startling. I appreciate his dedication to his (Love)craft, as I'm sure the effort was just as painful to his throat as it is to our ears. In any case, be forewarned that this is not a soothing bed time listen.

Lovecraft Meets Jasper fforde

The apocalyse is coming and a government group is trying to make sure it happens as smoothly as possible. The Elder Gods have set up Court in Birmingham UK. One of the human agents has died and a new agent has been sent from Scotland. The problem is though that the new agent has killed the Sacred Handmaid of one of the Elder Gods so it is likely they are going to want to kill her. Meanwhile a human incursion into the Birmingham Library has the team wandering exactly if something was stolen or added to the collection. Representatives of human religions are squabbling with one another . And the Elder Gods are suitably squamous, rugulose and horrific.

I'm not sure how the narrator managed to make the sounds of the language of the Elder Gods, but it is an extremely impressive piece of narratiion.

Fun and exciting!

This book was a fun romp of thought provoking ideas, twists and turns, great characters and wonderful humor. I hope a continuation of all the excitement is coming soon. Keeping my eyes open for the next book.

Don't bother

This story was confusing and I had to force myself to finish it. The narrator was great but the fact that the writer made them yell crazy names for otherworldly beings every other sentence ruined it.

Just not my thing

Sorry the story just didn’t do it for me. It’s just to slow and hardly any action/comedy/anything happening.

Frighteningly good fun

This was, without a doubt, one of the best buys I have made all year.

The cosmic horror is real funny. The characters are deliciously phenomenal. Jokes orbit with aliens in a graceful dance that manages to never eclipse each other.

And the storyteller. Amazing. His ability to nail the characters shone beautifully.

You can't go wrong with this one.
