Proof of what really killed the dinosaurs! The fate of Earth, Segnal, and the entire human race lies in the hands of Captain Don Harr and his crew of misfit androids.
Former Lord Overseer Veli is on the run and he has no intention of getting caught. In fact, he plans to build a new society that will dwarf the land of the Overseers. His ultimate goal is to wipe them out and show the universe what power really is. But he needs help, so he travels back in time to pick up the only one who could possibly understand his quest for power: himself. Unfortunately, his stomach is still rather upset from eating all of that popped beef before he fled from Fantasy Planet.
Harr works with the team on Fantasy Planet, the crew of the Little Ship, and his team of metallic minds to hunt down Veli so they can take him out before he can enact his nefarious plans. Decisions will be made along the way that no single person should ever be forced to make. Life and death are sitting at the feet of Captain Harr and, like it or not, he has to step on them both if he is to save the universe from Veli's tyranny.
To make matters worse, the interim Lord Overseer in Overseer Land has gotten designs on ruling with the same iron fist as her predecessor. Unbeknownst to Platoon F, their mission may be just what she needs to rule without fear of competition.
But things aren't always what they seem, especially when you're dealing with powers even greater than you can imagine.
John P. Logsdon is a former game designer, producer, and software engineer who shamelessly digs into the deep recesses of his mind to bring forth oddball characters and hilarious plots. He writes primarily in fantasy, urban fantasy, and science fiction, but he's also dabbled in cozy mystery from time to time. To see John's vast library of laughs, visit www.johnplogsdon.com.
"Would you kill baby dinosaur Hitler if you could?"
Lord Overseer Veli is revealed to actually be a dinosaur and there's time travel. A final nonsensical plot whereby Platoon F travels back in time to try to stop young Veli (short for "Velociraptor") from being tormented by his dinosaur classmates and growing up into a genocidal prick. The plan involves castration. Because of course it does. And it's over.
Have read many reviews of different books that give outline of the story, but this is Logsdon and t it's not really something one could do when it's {Terry} Pratchett meets {Douglas} Adams meets Monty Python meets Red Dwarf meets Star Trek meets Doctor Who meets Twilight Zone/Outer Limits/Night Gallery.... Realized at end of the Pentalogy that there are 2 of 'them', writers, so guess 2 peas in an...alien pod.... Their 'issues' have 'issues', and sincerely suggest that they both seem professional help...after a couple or more...sets/series. The only caveat is to not stop at book 2, it is by far the weakest and seems a bit out of place, but even Logsdon said 2 was not all he had wanted it to be. There are more than 5 total and got those to read as well. Sci-Fi fans that also like things mixed with humor or humour should definitely like these. In other news, it is quite possible that Logsdon has taken too many hockey puck shots to the head but still....

If you are a fan of crude humor and great storytelling, then you have come to the right place! Everything in the Platoon F series is enjoyable. The search for Veli is the ninth mission for our Platoon F friends and they continue to perform their hard tasks with hilarious effort. Every time I read one of their missions I find myself laughing out loud.

This is the 9th book in the series. You could just read this book, but would highly recommend reading the whole series. Not only because they are fantastic but also to follow the story line to its full extent. If you are not into crude or innuendo's and more adult based books then this may not be for you, but if you are a fan of the likes of Monty Python, or Red dwarf and Sci Fi comedy, then you will enjoy this series. Once again the crazy crew of Platoon F, lead by Captain Don Harr (flip first and last name) roam across time and space to trying to chase down the ousted Lord Overseer before he can once again rain havoc down on everyone. It had a great plot and lots of humor which makes it a great read in my opinion. I have read all 9 books and am already looking forward to book 10 when that happens.
In our last installment of the adventures of Platoon F, we learned that Lord Veli was not the evil person we thought he was, but that he was an evil velociraptor! And although Lord Veli didn’t manage to destroy the Fantasy Planet, he did make good his escape. Now it’s up to Captain Don Harr and his strange crew of androids and cavemen—excuse me, Early Evolved Humanoids—to find Veli and render him harmless—preferably by killing him.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, there’s drama over whether Interim Lord Overseer Pillbox will be able to consolidate power and replace the evil Veli—possibly by terminating rival Overseer Frexle along with his Platoon F companions. And if she does, will she be worse than Veli?
This was a fun and entertaining romp with Harr, Geezer, Frexle, and the crew of the SSMC Reluctant as they seek to find and eliminate Veli (with help of course from their diminutive counterparts, Goozer, et al., aboard the Tiny Ship).
Making humorous science fiction is an art that requires a deft touch. It’s easy to overdo or under do the humor, but Logsdon gets it right. With the wacky crew of Platoon F, he’s created a great bunch of characters including androids with neuroses that would be unusual for humans! If you like to read SciFi and laugh you need to become acquainted with Captain Don Harr and the crew. The good news is that there are 8 books that precede this one. You can start with The Search for Veli, but I recommend going back to book 1, SSMC Reluctant and enjoy the entire series.
Note: I was given an advance copy of The Search for Veli as an e-book in return for reviewing the book for possible errors and writing and posting a review of it.
Former Lord Overseer Veil is on the run. It's up to the crew of the Reluctant to track him down.
Join the crew on their search for Veli. They might even find answers to some of the age old questions of the universe such as "what really happened to the dinosaurs"? and "How did life on Earth begin"?
The latest in the madcap world of platoon F. There's a lot of plot in the other reviews, so I won't bother. But if you haven't spent any time with Logsdon (and in this series, Young) I highly recommend it.This is high burlesque at it's best, paced like a Marx Brothers skit, and as full of sophomoric humor as the Lampoon. But no, this is not Douglass Adamss (I like esses, sso ssue me) meets Discworld. More like John Belushi meets Lenny Bruce and Howard Stern, and takes them to Mark Twain's Bar and Grill. Or something.
I don't know how I came across these guys, especially since I quit drinking over thirty years ago. I think Bob the Zombie must've brought me. But I've enjoyed the trip. Hey, what can be better than spaceships, dinosaurs, androids and cavemen? And penis jokes...
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, and I can honestly say this book, like the previous volumes in the series, had me laughing out loud in places.
Not for the easily offended or overly “PC” reader, John and Chris have done it again with some great plot twists and witty (and very down to earth) humour. In their 9th adventure, this time the crew of the SSMC Reluctant are pursuing the former Lord Overseer Veli through time and space while having some hilarious adventures on the way. They come up with a most unusual way of ensuring the tyrannical Velociraptor can do no more harm, and we are treated to some sharp insights into politics, pre-history and religion in the process.
This was great fun to read and I’m looking forward to the next one!
If you are easily offended, then do us all a favor and just stop right here, hit the back button, and we will forget this ever happened, OK? Or better yet, buy this book and record yourself as you turn red with rage and march off to the review section and write your congressman and whatever else makes your sad empty world a little fuller.
For the rest of us, this is a lot of fun. I have been fortunate enough to go through this series of books and watch how both the characters and the authors progress over time. Don't get me wrong...the author has not grown up at all through the course of these books. In anything, he has gotten more juvenile, sophomoric, and just downright funny. Early books in the series seemed like they were missing something, but with this...everything is coming together. Don't expect a deep read, but every now and then, if you pay attention, you will find some insightful thinking mixed in with all the dick jokes.
To save themselves, as well as the rest of the universe, Platoon F must go searching through time and space for the dinosaur who has ruled the universe for millennia. It's another dirty job, and only Platoon F is up to the challenge.
Platoon F keeps evolving. Simple one-note jokes are now complex characters that engage you and make you wonder what's going to happen next. This was the finish to a story arc, but in a Star Trek kind of way. You know more is coming (or at least I hope), but you are satisfied with the ending. If there was a 4.5 star rating I'd give that, but I think the next few books could start to hit 5 star quality.
The latest Platoon F adventure story was not a letdown, it is filled with humor, adventure, suspense, all the things I enjoy in a good book. The way the antagonist was subdued was a new approach and hilarious, but it worked and for me was the highlight of the story. Look forward ot reading more in this series. Dan Sippel
I have been a John P Logsdon fan for a while now and have enjoyed this book immensely. I have really enjoyed the Platoon F series of books since i first heard about the collection and have probably enjoyed this book even more that the others somehow. Fans of the series won't go wrong with this book, it's well written and just a really enjoyable read. John P Logsdon has done it again, a well deserved 5 stars.
This book is so much fun. It was wonderful to go back and visit with all the crazy characters in this awesome series. There is so much going on in this book. It is jam-packed with action, excitement, and humor. You will be doing yourself a favor by getting this book. You will not be disappointed. Highly recommend.
I love the Platoon F Books. This is Number 9 and it doesn't disappoint! If you're a fan of Terry Pratchett, Monty Python, lots of innuendos and laugh out loud moments, then this is the Book for you! Cleverly written, great plot twists, a fun packed adventure full of travel through Space and Time, Dinosaurs, naughty Androids, Cavemen and Women and plenty of laughs! Fantastic read.
A book of dinosaurs in science fiction genre. Early Evolutionary Humans and androids and Captain Harr (Don) keeping everything moving forward with lots of silliness, but an interesting story line . Mix in a bit of tension and a few intellectual gymnastics and you've got a great read.
I've come to identify more and more with the crew (and friends) of Platoon F. They are always running from one adventure to another all the while trying to avoid danger and disaster and inadvertently changing galactic history. This time the emphasis is on the latter and it can only be solved by Deus ex Machina.
I look forward to accompanying my new friends (and my role model, Geezer) in their continued adventures.
