It's not easy to let your apprentice run the show...

Gungren is tired of waiting to become a full-fledged wizard, but Whizzfiddle isn’t one who takes well to his apprentices pushing him around.

Unfortunately, the Fates have decided to give one of their infamous quests to the tiny fellow, leaving Whizzfiddle with little choice but to lend his support. On top of that, it seems there was something more to the spell that had transformed Gungren from a dumb Giant into the smart, squat, wizard wanna-be.

Heliok, the Fate who masterminded The Twelve (the gods who created all of Ononokin), has been told that the percentage of believers has dwindled to unacceptable rates. If he doesn’t get it fixed within 90 days, he’ll be pushing a mop around for the janitorial department for the next thousand years.

As fortune would have it, the perfect quest has risen to the occasion.

Prince Jack Nubbins has gone missing and Princess Jill Henroot needs a wizard to help her find him before their wedding day!

This is the 5th book in the Ononokin series and my favourite so far even though I have quite honestly loved them all. For those who know them we have Whizzfiddle the Wizard (needs alcohol to do magic) and his apprentice Gungren (was a giant but shrunk), and Eloquen the Elf (who speaks in flowery language unless pushed into speaking properly) along with a whole host of new characters to make you laugh. The story was written with the usual Ononokin sense of humour and character descriptions that make you feel like you know them. This series is perfect for those who enjoy Monthy Python, Terry Pratchett or quite simply laughing out loud which is why it is so addictive. Another bonus is that there is so much potential for more stories so that the fun doesn't have to stop yet.

Humorous and witty

I would have given this 5 stars if the story was complete. The first 4 books all were complete stories in the same world and mention of and cameos of key persons, but this one ended with the completion of quest one of three. What of the other two quests? Two more books? Cheep marketing 😕. I hope it is not left hanging. I have enjoyed the series thus far so I will read the next and see where the tale goes from there.

P.S. That unique rabbit joke? I used that as a Cub scout more then 40 years ago... It was the tame joke.

A fitting quest.

Gungren needs to become a wizard, and has to perform quests to achieve this. What a surprise that a certain Fate becomes involved, though for reasons of his own.
Lough out loud funny, with fantastical characters who turn the world upside down. A series that keeps on giving.

If you're already familiar with the land of Ononokin prepare for another fun adventure with some of the characters you've already met and some new ones as well.

Whizzfiddle the Wizard and his "giant" apprentice are back. We also get another look at the worlds of The Fates and The Twelve.

Recommended of you like light fantasy with a bit of humor.

I was given a free copy of this for an honest review. Yet another great addition to the ononokin world. I love it that at this stage of the series, you get a great feeling for the characters and really route for them. I can’t wait to read the next in the series and see how the other quests turn out

I've loved every one of the Ononokin Series. The world building and character creation is excellent and every story has had me glued to the page from beginning to end. The books are full of fun and humour and all with a very well thought up storyline.

Another romping tale from the wonderfully silly Land of Ononokin. Loved the return of some old favorite characters from previous books along with the wonderful new characters. If you haven't yet read any of the Ononokin books I can highly recommend them. They have the same sense of silliness and humour that is found in great abundance in books by Tom Holt and Sir Terry Pratchett.

This latest tales all starts (as the title suggests) with a prince being kidnapped - but all is not as it seems. There are in fact two parties out to nab the hapless prince. Add in a wizard (who was previously an ogre) who desperately needs to complete a decent quest to get his wizarding licence, a sword wielding fiance, who is determined to rescue her man and various other characters like the ogre Lub, and you end up with a crazy farce of a story that turns everything on its head (several times). Loved it and bring on the next in the series.

The Kidnapped Prince is book five in the Tales from the Land of Ononokin series, and much like Sir Terry Pratchett's Diskworld, each book introduces new characters and locations while integrating characters and locations from previous books in the series. The Kidnapped Prince focuses on Gungren, a former dumb giant who was transformed into a very short, but smart, giant with ambitions to be a Wizard. Gungren wants to remain small and smart, and become a full Wizard, but must complete a quest in a short time to accomplish his goal. He is apprenticed to Whizzfiddle, the world's oldest Wizard, who must consume alcohol to perform spells. Gungren is selected by one of the Fates, Heliok, to embark on a quest to find the missing Prince, Jack Nubbins, who has been kidnapped. In this book there are, in addition to those already mentioned, competing mob bosses, each with their own reasons for wanting the Prince; assorted inept henchmen working for the bosses; the Princess, who is missing her fiance the Prince, just days before their wedding; and an Orc working as the Creative Director of The Learning Something Channel. These characters' paths converge when they are all trying to locate the missing Prince and devise an elaborate ruse to get him away from the mob boss who is holding him captive. Time is of the essence, because the Orc has three months to get the station's ratings numbers up, Heliok the Fate has three months to get Ononokin's population's belief numbers in the Fates to a respectable level, and Gungren must complete his quest in three months to become a Wizard, or be returned to the realm of the big, dumb, giants. This unlikely group must figure out a way to rescue the Prince while accomplishing their own goals as well as making sure the Prince and Princess marry their true loves. The characters are funny and likeable; the dialogue is witty, and Ononokin is a world of many layers and species that interact in novel and hilarious ways. This book is a wonderful addition to the series, and I look forward to many more.

This was such a great read! It centres around the apprentice wizard, Gungren (short giant!) and his desire to become a true wizard. He's getting frustrated with tame quests, so when the chance to fulfil a Fate Quest is given, he takes it with both hands!
I loved the idea that this time it was the princess who had to set out to save the prince from his kidnapping by the mob boss Kleeshay - and the confused conversations between Jack and Kleeshay about the soap, dope and rope were inspired! I could picture the look on Jack's face so clearly!
It was great that it brought back the characters from earlier novels, such as Gungren, Whizzfiddle and Eloquen, but there is really no need to read any of the previous stories to enjoy this one - I heartily recommend that you do, but it's up to you!
The writing was smooth, flowing well, and kept drawing me into the story - even when it was really late and I needed to sleep! Thoroughly enjoyable and well worth the read, especially if you like your fantasy quirky, humorous and full of Kleeshays...

I started reading this book and from the very start I was laughing, I adore Gungren and Whizfiddle, this time Gungren is in charge of his own quests, that the fates have created for him, to help Princess Jill find her Kidnapped Fiance.

Gungren has been getting disappointed recently in terms of his quests, set by Whizfiddle, now he has the opportunity to sink his teeth into some thing really big,

As well as my favorite characters Gungren and Wizzfiddle, we have a really friendly Giant ( a new favorite of mine ), Dark Skinned Elves, Orcs, Grumpy Dwarfs, the Creator of the 12 Fates of Ononokin . that make up a really good fantasy with plenty of humor to keep you laughing.

This book is one I will read and re-read again and again, for me this book should be rated a 10 but Amazon only give you the opportunity to give a 5 Star rating.

Ononokin starts to feel comfortable in its own skin

The latest addition to this series really starts to pull everything together. I think Gungren was one of my favorite supporting characters in the series, and it is great to see him develop. We are starting to see characters from previous books take larger roles in the shared world, while still developing new characters and bringing in larger themes and stories. That sense of interconnectedness and bringing members back into the spotlight from time to time is where series such as this build a following. I think this is the first time a book has not been completely stand alone, as it feels like we are being set up for a larger series within the series, which I like. I feel like a solid foundation has been set in the previous books, and now it is time to see what fun comes from the world and the various threads laid out so far.

"I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The fifth book in the Ononokin series, as with the others it can be read as a standalone, but the experience is greatly improved by reading them all.
I won’t give the storyline away (I hate reading reviews when they do that) but I will say I had quite a lot of chuckles, laughs and smiles while reading!  The authors use humour in the best way.
The story is fast paced and includes several important characters, the story goes between all of them on their journey (or quest).
You learn about The Fates, orcs, ogres, dark elves, wizards and giants (big and small).
If you like fantasy/scifi, a good laugh and a good story and characters then give this and the rest a try.

Hits the spot

A brilliant set of stories which brought me a humour I haven't found since reading my hero Terry Pratchett. Stories are iterlinked and create a imaginary map of two world's characters and adventures. Well written with many a nod to society 's ridiculous whims. Thanks.
