Purchase options and add-ons
While Great Britain stands alone against the might of the Third Reich, an even more sinister threat lurks in the halls of London…
As Hitler prepares to unleash the full force of his Luftwaffe against England, and the Battle of Britain takes hold of the skies, Evelyn Ainsworth is enjoying a much-needed holiday in London. When a chance conversation reveals the existence of a ruthless group of traitors, the MI6 agent is thrust back into the world of shadows where everyone has something to hide. Determined to expose those who would destroy England from within, Evelyn embarks on a dangerous game that could end her career…
Or her life.
In the skies above, the pilots she loves are facing an increasingly determined and deadly enemy. Knowing that invasion is imminent, Flight Lieutenant Miles Lacey and his squadron are busy defending convoys from Göring’s finest. But as war takes its toll, they begin to realize that they may not be enough to stop the onslaught that is coming.
Surrounded by the enemy, England’s sole defense lies with her RAF pilots, and a young socialite willing to sacrifice everything to save her country.

About the author

CW Browning was writing before she could spell. Making up stories with her childhood best friend in the backyard in Olathe, Kansas, imagination ran wild from the very beginning. At the age of eight, she printed out her first full-length novel on a dot-matrix printer. All eighteen chapters of it. Through the years, the writing took a backseat to the mechanics of life. Those mechanics, however, have a great way of underlining what genuinely lifts a spirit and makes the soul sing. After attending Rutgers University and studying History, her love for writing was rekindled. It became apparent where her heart truly lay. Picking up an old manuscript, she dusted it off and went back to what made her whole. CW still makes up stories in her backyard, but now she crafts them for her readers to enjoy. She makes her home in Southern New Jersey, where she loves to grill steak and sip red wine on the patio.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2022The build up towards the coming Battle of Britain is complete, however i can only hope for a shorter respite between this and the next installment! The inner deceit from some of England’s highest social crust is a compelling piece of this story as well as Churchill’s support of guerrilla type tactics in the development of the SOE hopefully will be accented along with the coming struggle in the air over Great Britain. Great work!

- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2023I’m sad that it ended when it did! CW Browning is an excellent author, well researched, delightful in her character development and the attention to detail of the sentiment of the times. I feel like I am listening to stories from my grandparents, not a modern rendition of history, and it immerses me into a movie in my mind. The ending is like the reel to reel that has just ended, slapping the film against the projector, awaiting the change to the next set of film…
These books should be made into a series of movies. Firm, strong, aristocratic, yet humble protagonist, with genuine villains, thoughtful story development, and a British essence underpinning all. I am eagerly awaiting the next installment and glad that it’s only 1940, as we have at least five more years (and books) to explore the growth of these endearing friends and how they do their part to save what they know and love from utter destruction.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2023I love historical fiction especially when it stays true to form. I love suspense and mystery. And I enjoy a book that holds my interest. This series does all.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2022Another fantastic follow on and finish that leaves you anxiously awaiting the next book in the series. If you are a fan of sagas, especially ones set in WWII, then I highly recommend you read this series. You’ll be happy that you did!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2024This is, I guess, supposed to historical fiction. Well, the fiction part is correct and it’s hysterical. In this book you will get the incorrect idea that the Spitfire won the Battle of Britan, it did not. The Hawker Hurricane was responsible for the majority of Luftwaffe losses during the Battle and it was more numerous during that period than the Spitfire.
MI 6 didn’t get its current name until it became into use during WW 2, officially it was referred to as the SIS.
This young woman name should be really Juliane Bondie. She is a judo expert; a crack shot and can learn any language in minutes. She is not a spy; she is a courier and most intelligence agencies would let her run to see her contacts. The idea that a foreign intelligence agency would commit a major spying assert into finding a courier is not just silly it’s ludicrous.
Then this courier with holds critical information because daddy told her too and to determine what the info means she disguises herself as a man to interview an engineer. At this point I was losing too many brain cells to continue.
Next, I suppose, she will be sent back to France to win the war.
Sadly, until well after the war the contribution thew many brave women who worked for the resistance were not recognized. Many if not most were living in Europa when the war stated. These women’s stories should be written.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2022I have read all the books in the series to date. This was the least enjoyable. The author took pains to detail Evelyn's newly found distaste for her peers' shallowness, but spent probably 75% of the book subjecting readers to the insipid dialogue between all these shallow wealthy characters. Previous books focused on naive Evelyn and her growth, but the plotline of this installment was lost in all the triviality of the characters' chatter about stupid things. This series in general is pretty light in believability, but up u til this book has still been entertaining. I kept reading so that I would keep up on the general storyline. Wen the next installment is released I hope that the author will focus on the historic element and espionage and leave out the drivel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read and definite feeling of London just before The Battle of Britain

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent
A fantastic read as with the previous books in this series. It is hard to believe that people actually did this sort of thing during world war 2 and yet 70 odd years later it's just a story to us now. God bless the men and women who gave there today for our tomorrow.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping continuation of a World War 2 series with a female protagonist
I have read all of the books in this series with great enjoyment. The events of this book cover the early days of the war when Britain was in danger of being overwhelmed by German superiority in the air compounded by traitors at home hoping for a quick defeat. The author vividly describes the courageous actions of those fighting in the air and on the ground to prevent an easy German victory. In particular, Evelyn Ainsworth, a young member of the social set, is secretly working as an English spy to discover and foil the plots of the traitors.

3.0 out of 5 stars Unfinished story line
What a disappointment. The theme was clearly the discovery of the London based Nazi group. And author chose to not disclose the members after letting MI6 know and MI5 know the details. This included the notorious Henry. Unbelievable !!

4.0 out of 5 stars Miss Indestructible.
The continuing saga of Miss Evelyn Ainsworth and her escapades throughout WWII. A mixture of history and fiction, the author, an American, has assiduously researched her subject and I have learned much about the day to day events in that conflict that hitherto I knew next to nothing about.
Much of the writing is good but two ‘howlers’ made me wince.
1. The author has the British radio news bulletins being paused for an advertising break! There were no commercial radio stations broadcasting in the U.K. during WWII.
2. Eton College is spelled with an A as in Eaton Square . Not so !
Apart from that, the author spins an interesting tale that stays just the right side of believable. Recommended.
