It is a fast paced novella that establishes the origins for the rest of the series. The characters and story universe are well described after all of them receive their required vaccinations. It is now the ‘haves’ vs the ‘have-nots’. The ‘haves’ have built high rises around the world that let them live above it all and the ‘have-nots’ have been transformed into monsters.
I loved the subplot that could be extrapolated from what is happening irl with women’s rights. I would love to think that things like this (ok, maybe not as extreme), would never happen, but with the current attack on the rights of females and their autonomy around the world, it is all too apparent they could.
I mention the following for readers such as myself that visualize the story as it is read, as errors interrupt the flow. There are only a couple of grammatical issues involving incorrect punctuation, but nothing difficult to interpret. I uploaded my notes to goodreads for anyone interested.
This story begins with the polyamorous, conjoined group waking up and having some fun. Shanna starts it, but Chaska, Alex and Rowan are happy to participate and provide her with a distraction. She is really anxious about taking the mandatory vaccines because of the way they are being handled. The sites are segregated by gender, heavy penalties for anyone not complying within 24 hours, and the timing is off.
They all take periodic vaccinations, but nothing like this rollout. The quad make their plans for the day. Even though their relationship is illegal now, none of them care. Maybe it even adds an edge of excitement because it is forbidden.
Rowan is a policeman, and he is going to drive Shanna to the womens’ site. This is required since women have basically lost all rights. They are not allowed to vote, drive, work outside the home, or even be out in public without a male escort.
Shanna gets back home, and unlike with previous vaccines, she is tired and her arm is hurting. She decides to take a nap. Shanna is woken up when Rowan comes in sick. She forces herself to get up and take care of him. Then before she knows it, Chaska, aka Chass, is there also under the weather. Then finally Alex arrives and he is definitely not himself … he has sprouted a dark pelt, long ears, and lots of jagged sharp teeth; even his face and body have changed to acquire more ‘wolfish’ characteristics.
While Shanna and Chass are getting him settled, Chass goes to check on their other mate, Rowan, who was still sleeping. After he walks over and can clearly see his face, he calls for Shanna to come over. Rowan has morphed into a big furry rabbit.
About that time, Alex, who was busy having a raw beef-sicle, gets a whiff of Rowan’s new bunny scent and it must smell wonderful to his new wolf. Before they realize what is going on, Alex has jumped the space between him and Rowan, and has his new fangs buried around Rowan’s neck … OMG! WTF?!
