4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 1,544 ratings

Izzy Lewis is an ordinary girl working at a coffee shop, but she has an interesting hobby—stalking her favorite customers on social media. But when she stalks the wrong couple, things take a dark turn. A harrowing thriller about privacy, privilege, and lies by Britney King, the bestselling author of HER.

A timeless, perfect couple waltzes into the small coffee shop where Izzy Lewis works. Instantly enamored, she does what she always does in situations like these: she searches them out on social media.

Just like that—with the tap of a screen—she's given a front-row seat to the Dunns' picturesque life. This time, she's certain she's found what she's been searching for. This time, she'll go to whatever lengths it takes to ensure she gets it right—even if this means doing the unthinkable.

Intense and original, The Social Affair is a disturbing psychological thriller that explores what can happen when privacy is traded for convenience.

The Social Affair
So, I kinda hopped on the BK Bandwagon—it’s a thing, trust me—a little late in the game. But you guys know I love me some Britney King—and despite my semi-late obsession with her, I still like to think I found her first. 🤪About a year ago I discovered her books and haven’t looked back since. That said, there are still some earlier ones I haven’t read yet, although of course, I own them. This happened to be one of them. After a month and a half of a hardcore reading slump, I decided to pick up The Social Affair, knowing full-well my girl wouldn’t let me down. That she’d be the ticket to the five-star read I’ve been looking for.And. She. Was.The prose, the plot, the believable dialogue, and BK’s signature “WTF” factor were just what I needed to get out of that dreaded slump!Britney King can truly do no wrong. 🙌 I said what Isaid. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m about to go read the other two books in this series. ✌🏻𝐍𝐎𝐓𝐀𝐁𝐋𝐄 𝐐𝐔𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐒:"𝐼 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑑 𝑎 𝑞𝑢𝑜𝑡𝑒 𝑜𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑠𝑎𝑖𝑑...𝑎 𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑒 𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑘 𝑜𝑓𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑖𝑠 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑡𝑟𝑦 𝑡𝑜 𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑟 𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑎𝑑 𝑜𝑓 𝑡𝑟𝑦𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡𝑜 ℎ𝑢𝑟𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑚 𝑏𝑎𝑐𝑘.""𝑌𝑜𝑢 𝑐𝑎𝑛'𝑡 𝑚𝑎𝑘𝑒 𝑎 𝑙𝑖𝑓𝑒𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑖𝑡𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑡𝑜 𝑎𝑛𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑜𝑛 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑒 𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑢𝑛𝑠𝑐𝑎𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑑. I got wrapped up in this story from the very beginning, with the prologue and first chapter giving me a look at what was to come. Both filled me with dread, but also with curiosity and the need to find out what was going on and why it was happening. As I read the book, I kept telling myself “one more chapter” only to find that I had read several more and still didn’t want to stop.
The story is told by two women, in alternating chapters, which built the suspense. The real-life, current issues addressed here made me think and scared me, plus there is a dose of “what if” tossed into the mix. I saw how social media can be used to present what we want the world to see, no matter how much it hides, and how it can put someone right into the midst of hidden danger. I saw how something that should be good can be twisted into justification to control and hurt others. There really is a lot going on here, making it very engrossing and interesting.
Two things I’m certain of after reading this book: One is that I won’t be entering into any type of agreement any time soon! The other is that I will definitely read more of Britney King’s books! Highly recommended!

The Social Affair is a fast paced thriller about two women's lives who are intertwined somewhat by change and the other half by force.

I really enjoyed the shorter chapters and quick character development of this book. I feel like I had some of the characters story lines figured out and then it would quickly change when I wasn't expecting it.

I've been on a bit of a thriller binge so that may be why this didn't thrill me enough to give it 5 stars. Without giving much away it seemed very similar to The Last Mrs. Parrish, which I had just read. Maybe since that was fresh in my mind it hindered me getting into this more then I could have.

I think this book does a great job showing how Social Media can impact us and the ways it can help people manipulate each other. However, you also have to keep in mind that Social Media may show you have a perfect life but you never really know what goes on behind closed doors.

The book left some open ended questions for me - I want to know more about New Hope, Josh and June. I was told that Britney King will be writing a follow up to explain more of this which I will definitely pick up because New Hope is a really interesting topic and something I want to learn more about.

If you're into thrillers, social media and affairs I would recommend picking up The Social Affair

I liked the book overall but didn't like the ending. It left too many unanswered questions. I don't know if this is a book that was Intentionally written that way so that you will buy the next book or not but that is a practice that I despise. I thought the story was very different and interesting. It does pull you in but I felt it was a little slow moving. I don't know if there was a book before this that would have had more background on the characters and the church. It does give an accurate depiction of social media, however. I might try another book by this author.

Part Cult. Part Stalker. Utterly addicting.

It's always a little nerve wracking when someone you consider your friend gives you the honor of reading an early release copy of her book. However, I've read her before so I was 99.9% sure I was going to love this new standalone novel and guess what? I DO!

Izzy leads a worker's life. She barely makes rent, hardly has an appetite and still mourning the death of Jake, she makes bad decisions and just trudges through day to day. That is, until Josie and Grant Dunn walk into the coffee shop she works at. This gorgeous couple is everything she dreams of. As she's prone to do, she scours Instalook and maxes out her credit cards buying things those with a large social media presence promote. As she starts stalking Josie, she decides she needs to immerse her life into Josie's... and nothing is going to stop her.

Josie and Grant appear to be the perfect couple As long as she adhere's to the rules, her life runs smoothly. Beautiful house, clothes, jewelry and a successful surgeon of a husband. Add two kids and what could possibly be wrong with this picture? A LOT. The question is, is there a way out of it?

I love anything that's even remotely cultish and bringing in New Hope church and the Dunns' involvement within this culture was creepy and intriguing to learn about. What I really liked was King's incorporation of modern day stalking. In the real world, we can pretty much look into the lives of anyone with any social media presence - Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.. and in this book, Instalook. The representation of Josie constantly posting, hashtagging and continually checking her phone for how many likes she received, how to engage her followers, etc. was extremely realistic. It also goes to show, again, how what you see on the internet isn't always a true representation of what happens behind closed doors. After all, we all want people to think we are happy, right? Just how much of your self esteem comes from your online presence?

Then there's the ending - I truly did NOT see that coming and that is always such a nice surprise. EEK - it's Britney, bitch! She got me! At under 300 pages, this book really packs a punch. Throughout my read I had some questions... but then they all got answered and I am completely satisfied with this. Having read prior work, I'm not surprised in the slightest. And here's a fun fact - her books all interconnect in one way or another. See if you can figure out how. 😉

Avoid this book, I was drawn in by the write up, which promised an interesting current storyline... it does not deliver.
The characters are uninteresting, dull and typically "modern American". Perhaps therein lies the problem?
The writing style is hard work. The genre is more chic lit than psychological thriller.
