Mara has spent the last year building her comic book store from the ground up, after the unexpected loss of her twin brother Chance. This was their dream, and no matter how much she may miss her old career in video game creation, she won't let Chance or 'Ghost', the comic series he created, be forgotten.

Ford has spent the last decade focused on building his career whilst following in his father's footsteps. Having just won an award at the Sundance Film Festival, he's at the top of his game, and is on the look out for the next big script. This all changes when a family emergency brings him back to his home town and he's forced to reconnect with his roots.

When a sudden rain storm sees Ford taking shelter within Mara's store, they don't part on the best of terms. Will their shared love of storytelling and current family obligations bring them closer? Or will one break free and return to their old life?

I really enjoyed this book and felt like the tension between Mara and Ford grew at a delicious pace! It made every aspect of the book even better, as you never knew if this scene or chapter would lead to a turning point in their relationship. I enjoyed the 🔥 within the book and the way that this was spread out within the story rather than an immediate occurance.

The sub plots surrounding Chance, his comic series, the store and his death were deep and revealed a lot about Mara's motivations. It made her a far more lovable character than she may have been otherwise and I was really rooting for her to make the best decisions for her future, no matter how difficult.

[ENG / ESP]

Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for this ARC in exchange of an honest review. And sorry if I make any mistake ot typo, English is not my first language.

Slow simmer is an entertaining book, and that's honestly what I'm looking for in a romance. But there were some things that made me lower the score and made it not be on my top romance reads.

The MCs are Mara and Ford. Mara's character is one that we tend to read lately (thankfully) on roncoms: imperfect, with defined hobbies and clear flaws. I think that's great, because it's very realistic, but sometimes she acted in ways that weren't as in-character, at least in my perspective.

The problem is, in my opinion, with Ford's character. To be honest, it's not a this-book-only problem, but a whole-genre one: we must stop making (and, as readers, asking for) male characters as perfect beings that excell at everything. I didn't find him realistic at all, and that was throwing me off. I admit that he's great, he's supportive of Mara and he's trying to reconnect with his family (even though I feel like the author was short on showing us this plot), he's too perfect. He's flawless, he as no personal growth plots.

Besides, the author's writing was light and entertaining, even though there were some gags or descriptions that were way too long for me. This is obviously my taste, but I have to say that there were times that I wanted to skip some paragraphs.

The topics covered in this book (death of a relative, reconnecting with family, toxic parents...) are quite well covered and the author treated them with respect. If I were to say something is, as I said before, I think the author was too centered on the romantic relationship and kind of forgot about some of the more secundary plots.

Long story short, this was an entertaining book, but not quite as realistic. I would recommend it to people that needs something lighter to evade themselves, but they aren't looking for something extremely close to reality.

A light and easy read with a sweet, functional romance.

Mara walked away from her career as a video game designer to fulfill her and her late brother’s dream, and she’s now the owner/manager of a comic book store. The business is struggling a little, but she’s working hard to make it a success, even though she’s wrestling with feelings of doubt about whether it’s where she truly wants to be.

Ford is a newbie movie director who has just won a major award and is on the hunt for his next project. But first, his siblings have talked him in to travelling to his home town for a while to reconnect with his family – especially their aging father.

Mara and Ford’s first meeting is less than ideal, but when she challenges his career choices, forces him to buy a bunch of comics and then boots him out of her store, he is intrigued. And when he finds his next potential movie in the comics that she gave him, their lives become tangled. And then get even more tangled when attraction begins to blossom. Mara has just come out of a toxic relationship, and she’s hesitant to get involved, but Ford is a gentleman and a sweetheart, and he gently yet thoroughly wins her over with charm, sweet dates and thoughtful gestures.

“I’ve been searching for you all my life.”

It’s sweet, sexy and functional, and I enjoyed watching Mara and Ford come together. They talk honestly, they open up about their lives, and they come together easily and naturally. But they both have some soul searching to do to figure out what they want from their lives, and how and if that fits in with their new relationship.

Along the way we get to meet a whole heap of side characters – Mara’s book club who are an interesting bunch, and her and Ford’s families, all dealing with some twisted family dynamics, which are interesting to explore, and which add to the complexity of them trying to figure out their lives.

It’s an easy read without a lot of drama, but I did struggle to connect to it. It’s a really long book, it’s slow moving, and a lot of the scenes and plot details seemed unnecessary to the story, which made it drag a bit. But it ends in a good place, with a satisfying ending.

3 stars.

Thanks to NetGalley and Victory Editing for an arc of this book. Below is my honest review.

Ford Ross, an award winning director, is home for the first time in a while. Something’s up with his father and his siblings asked him to figure it out as the favorite child. And … his father is avoiding him.

Ford goes to a comic book store to escape a storm and accidentally chases off customers by bashing Superman adaptations. He is in talks to direct one, but he doesn’t have much interest. Ford and the owner argue about old rehashed movies vs fresh plots. Mara, the owner, gives him comics to read. A little later they run into each other and bond over common interests.

Ford flirts, Mara resists after years of being gaslit and undermined. Their friends and family poke their noses into their budding relationship. You know how it is.

Will he direct the Superman movie? Will Mara help him? What’s up with dad? Will anyone fall for each other?

I really enjoyed this book and was THRILLED to see there will be at least two more. Ford’s movie your date was adorable, all of the characters were likable (unless they weren’t supposed to be), Chris Pitt had the best name ever. Except, no, the comic shop definitely did. If you are in the mood for a romcom that is somehow both lighthearted and deals with some deeper themes, give this one a chance!

TW-death of family members (off page), verbally abusive ex, cheating ex (secondary character), condescending/undermining parent, fertility struggles (secondary character).

I was drawn to this based on Mara owning a comic bookstore, I love comics and manga, obviously I love books, but I don’t think I’ve read a book before where they were involved, to be honest on TV other than the Big Bang Theory they aren’t present much, so I loved this aspect and hope more authors might introduce them into their novels more, it would make this reader a lot happier. I loved the fact that Mara had given up her own dream to continue her brother’s legacy, it’s a hard because she is struggling to figure out how to still fit what she wants to do and how to fit around both, this is something so relatable as so many people do this for family and loved ones.
As a fan of slow burn romances this is another reason I loved this book, it’s a great example of the perfect slow burn, everything about it is spot on , an awkward start, the cautious friendship, the past burns that have scarred Mara’s feelings of romance, Ford’s initial reluctance to wanting anything serious, the proof that you can change how you feel when you meet the right person, I just found it addictive to watch them slowly be drawn to the other. I also liked the issues with their families and boy did I want a word with Mara’s father but I’m not saying anymore as I won’t spoil it, but it’s good for showing how families shouldn’t interfere, pressure, but instead they need to support their children. Sheridan’s characters are fantastic, she writes wonderful and relatable people, ones who goon a journey, learn, change and grow. It’s wonderful to read.
Overall it’s an addictive and wonderful romance, one I recommend to any fan of romance.

Ford Ross, a hotshot movie director fresh off an award winning film, is struggling to choose his next film project. When he returns to his hometown to reconnect with his family, he meets Mara Stellar, owner of a struggling comic book shop. Though a bad breakup has left Mara reluctant to pursue a new relationship, she takes a chance on Ford. From two different worlds, they initially get off to a rocky start but things slowly begin to heat up as they find common ground and discover that they may be able to help each.

This is an easy read and the first person narration alternates between Ford and Mara's perspective. Mara is awesome; she's intelligent and nerdy, and I love her book club friends! I especially love all the geeky references in her narrative. Unfortunately, I was not a big fan of Ford and his initial chapters did not have me rooting for this couple at all. He came off as infuriatingly self absorbed and I couldn't understand what Mara saw in him aside from his good looks. The insta love didn't make sense to me. He has a good character arc and he eventually grew on me, but I think I could have appreciated him more if the book had been entirely from Mara's perspective.

This was a sweet romance story between Mara, a comic book store owner and Ford, a movie director. I appreciated the buildup to the duo's relationship before they got too serious. Their romance felt credible, and the chemistry was evident as they spent more time together. I loved how they each had issues to resolve with their own families with the epilogue being exactly what the story needed to give me a warm fuzzy feeling inside. I can't wait to read the next book in the series!

Review: ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 Stars.
Spice: 🌶️🌶️

The story starts off with a Hollywood Director, Ford Ross crashing into Mara Stellar's comic book store to aid himself in rain, where he immediately gets captivated by her beauty and lively personality.

When I picked this book, I thought it was named after the slowly brewing up chemistry between the two characters and damn was I right about that when the title made sense to me!!!

I didn't give 5 stars because I wanted to see more of Mara and Ford's Relationship, after they have moved past from their initial phase of dating; Mara and Don's bonding. I feel like they would have made a fun duo, giving hard time to Ford. Nevertheless, the story was great. It's easy to read and had me hooked till end. Not even once I felt like skipping through any paragraph (or chapter).
What felt like perfect cherry on top was how the story keeps mentioning about movies and superheroes' comic books. It was my favorite element of the book.

Mara Stellar is a hardworking woman who does everything in her power to keep her Twin's dream alive. She went through a lot of pain but came out stronger. In the end, she really was a superhero of her own life.

Ford Ross, god that man can have my heart & I won't ask for it back. He's amazing, loves Mara with everything, always so attentive and keen on communication. Just when I thought that man couldn't be anymore perfect, he did things, sweet things for Mara's Dog, Zephyr. Always getting him treats, taking him on walks. God that man!!!

There wasn't any character I didn't liked, well except for a *cough* Douche *cough* Doug and Dr. Stellar until the end where his character improves.

The author did an amazing job in showing the temptation and tension between the two. How it simmers with time until it boils and both of them explode. The spice was mild, not too graphic so easily an ideal book for those who don't prefer to read smut.

This book isn't about two different people from two different worlds falling in love. This amazing book is about two different people from different worlds falling in love and creating a life together, facing struggles and fixing things together.

This beautiful story explores:
– Small Town Romance,
– Celebrity Romance,
– Slow Burn,
– Contemporary Romance,
– Strangers to Lovers,
– He falls first.

If you love a book with these elements then, I'd say you gotta get this book!!!

Lastly, big thanks to #netgalley for this amazing book!

This book felt really long. From the description, I thought I'd be getting a sweet, funny, romance. This wasn't that at all. I did like Mara's character as well as Ford. There was simply too much deep issues and pain they both had to overcome to call this a rom com. And there was a lot of sex to skim past. So, definitely NOT for my clean reads followers.

I've wondered if I would have enjoyed the story more if I hadn't been expecting a rom com. Perhaps, but I also thought the slow simmer referred to Ford's cooking instead of the sexy bits. Which weren't slow at all.

This book will probably be great for many people. I had an advanced copy, so hopefully the typos and timeline inconsistencies are cleaned up in the final copy.

In the end, I liked that Mara was a game coding comic book store owner. I liked that Ford was willing to move home to be closer to family. I liked that Ford always supported Mara and tried to build her up instead of tear her down like her father and her ex. But I was constantly trying to readjust my expectations from the story I was looking forward to and the one I was reading.

Because it felt long, had too much on-screen intimacy for me, as well as strong language, I give Slow Simmer 3 Stars and an R rating.

1-5 scale and what it means:
1: I couldn’t even finish it / just plain bad
2: I hope I didn’t pay for this / disappointing
3: I didn’t hate it, but it was still missing something / forgettable but inoffensive
3.5: On the line between good and ok / like, not love
4: Solid mind candy / worth reading
4.5: So very close to perfection! / must read
5: I could not put it down and I’m still thinking about it! / a true treasure

Movie Ratings in relation to my review:
Clean--Hallmark movies, some kissing, no nudity, no intimacy on or off "screen"
PG--Some innuendo but nothing kids don't hear every day, intimacy is all closed door
PG-13--some language (swear words not related to intimacy), more talk about intimacy, heavy petting, removal of clothing on screen, but intimacy is closed door.
PG-14—somewhere between PG-13 and R. Not erotica, but at least a paragraph of on-screen intimacy
R--swearing (F-bomb, on “screen” intimacy, sometimes feels like the whole story is about the intimacy and not the relationship or some other plot, but not always

This book surprised me! I wasn’t sure what to expect, and with the length (420 pages), but an interesting blurb, I figured I should really give this new-to-me author a try. I’m so very glad I did - and not only that, but I grabbed the next book in the series, too!

I enjoyed the book the whole way through, and was actually sad when I finished. Even though the page count was higher than many, it was a very quick read. I couldn’t put it down because I had to know the whole plot and storyline, and exactly how it was all going to end. It was intriguing! I loved the characters, the town, and just everything about it. I can’t wait to dive into the next book!

The slow burn trope has always been a difficult one for me, but lately, with more authors going that route, it has slowly been growing on me. The very slow build romance between small town comic book store owner Mara, and big city, award winning movie director (returned to his hometown, just outside Pittsburgh), Ford, is thrilling. She’s got trust issues after a gaslighting ex, and he’s got no interest in dating or sticking around town after checking on his family… but of course everything can change when you meet your right person!

I definitely recommend this book to every romance lover out there - it has everything perfect about the genre. I’m really looking forward to picking up book 2!

Thank you, Flowers and Fullerton and NetGalley, for the advanced copy.

This was an adorable meet cute. I really enjoyed the alternating POV chapters. There was never any retelling of the story when the points of view changed. Thank goodness! I can't stand when authors do that. It's like just write a novella and move on, man. Slow Simmer was just the opposite of a slow simmer! It had me hooked from the beginning! Probably could have had a little bit more character development, but not bad for a fun beach read. I enjoyed it.

Mara Stellar will do everything she can to make sure her and her twin brother's dreams come true even after he dies tragically. They dreamed of owning a comic book shop, and Chance also had written a comic book series. When a big-time movie director finds himself taking shelter in Ghost of a Chance, the comic store, he finds himself in a convo with store owner, Mara. She loads him down with a few comic books to study, but one in particular catches his eye. He wants to turn her brother's comic, Ghost, into a movie. Slow Simmer follows Mara and Chance as their relationship blossoms, and they both find what they want and need with each other.

Mara owns a comic store that she made a reality when her twin brother passed away. Her dream was coding for games but she wanted to make this a success. Mara gave up her career for her family.
Ford is a movie director and between movies so is visiting his family, who he hadn't seen in a while as he was making something of himself with his career. He gave up his family for his career.
Then these 2 meet and they seem to fight obstacles to make a relationship work.
I wished I had known Mara's brother as he had already passed when the book started. Then we find out he had actually written one of the comic books being sold and now Ford wants to turn it into a movie. Mara is all for it but doesn't want hardly any changes made to the movie to keep it on point of the way the comic was written.
I liked all the characters except for Mara's father. I would have told him off a long time ago. He was mean to Mara and actually told her she was stupid. I think I would have blown my cool and told him that in the father department he failed and was an asshole.
I received this from NetGalley to review.

This author does a great job of writing sweet (and mildly spicy) romances. Perhaps I've become jaded by the books I've read recently, but I kept expecting something terrible to happen to the characters each chapter—and nothing ever did. Yes, they dealt with their own trials and troubles, and yes, they had to work through some highly relatable anxieties and familial issues, but there was nothing that would warrant a major stress reaction, and for that I'm glad. I needed a comfort read when I found it, and now I'll trust this author to give me a lower-spice (but not fade-to-black) romance that doesn't also set off my fear-for-the-characters'-sanity-or-life alarms. There are days for books dealing with good vs. evil, or overcoming intense personal struggle, but on the days I just want my heart warmed or to put my mind's eye in a beautiful little town with kind and caring characters, I'll be reading a book by this author.
Also: anyone who is a little on the nerdy side and wants to feel *seen* should definitely consider reading this book! You'll want blue-tipped hair by the end of it.

Ms Jeane is a new-to-me author, so I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked this up. The cover is cute, and drew my attention and when I read the blurb, I definitely became interested in reading it. I was not disappointed! The story was cute, fun, and flirty with just the right amount of spice. Ford and Mara were interesting characters and I enjoyed getting to know them and follow their story. This was the perfect slow-burn romance. Mara and Ford first form a friendly relationship. Mara has been burned in the past so she approaches romance with much caution. Ford doesn't want anything serious, but spending time with Mara changes his perception on relationships. The characters were well-defined with realistic qualities which made them relatable. There was no question about the strong chemistry between them, and I enjoyed their banter and interactions. Glad to have had the opportunity to read this one!

I loved this romcom romance , such great characters and insight into all of them. I fell in love with Mara and her struggles to come to terms with how she could still have her dream but also honour her twin brothers legacy. She is an amazing strong female lead . I also loved Fords character and how is is portrayed as supportive male character and the love he has for family. The author did a wonderful job introducing us to many characters and this wonderful town in Pittsburg. As much as this is a romcom I felt it dealt with many heavier issues but it all blended well with the romance blooming between Ford and Mara. I can’t wait for the next book in this series to come out and see what adventures come to the rest of the characters.
This book was an easy read, I read it in one day ….did not want to put it down.

Mara and Ford are such interesting characters that captured my attention from the beginning. I was enthralled by their romance – loved the dates that they went one 😊 Ford is absolutely my latest book boyfriend. I found them to be relatable and enjoyed spending time reading their story. I enjoyed many of the secondary characters and found that some of them added to the fabric of the story.

There were aspects of the story that I found were mentioned with frequency that I wish had not (I won’t go into specifics as it would be spoiler). There were secondary characters and story threads mentioned at different times in the story that were dropped or never mentioned again, and I wished they had been better/more thoroughly developed. These are the aspects that made this story a 4 star instead of 5 for me.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Slow Simmer by Sheridan Jeane follows the two main characters Ford and Mara.

Ford is a movie director who comes back home to come figure out what is going on with Dad and to to figure out what project he wants to take on next. Mara is a comic book store owner that she opened to keep her brother dreams alive after he passes, and leaving her dream job as a coder.

I really loved the connection between the two characters and the story was well written. However, the spicy scenes just weren't it for me and it almost turned me off from finishing a few times. Luckily that wasn't the main focus of the books. While I didn't love this book, I will most likely still read the next book in the series. Also I like the recipes included at the end of the book.

Mara Stellar livelihood is in peril so when Ford Ross, a movie director arrives in town, she knows that she has to meet him. Similarly, when Ford meets Mara, he thinks he's found the perfect muse. They both realise that they must follow their hearts and their instincts if they are going to succeed. Together, they realise that they have to take a chance if they are going to have any chance at a fairy tale ending.
This is a slow burn romance between two very likeable characters. Mara is determined woman who has gone through considerable loss. Ford is a true gentleman who would do all that he can for Mara. Together these are two genuine people, working through their difficulties.

Slow Simmer" by Sheridan Jeane is an okay read with some enjoyable moments. The story follows the romance between Mara, a comic book shop owner, and Ford, an award-winning movie director, who both have their own personal struggles to overcome. The plot is predictable, but the characters are likable, and the chemistry between Mara and Ford is palpable.

However, the story feels rushed in some places, and the conflicts are resolved too conveniently. The dialogue can be cheesy at times, and some of the characters lack depth."Slow Simmer" is a decent romantic read, but it doesn't quite reach the level of a satisfying page-turner.

This book was such a cute read, you have Mara who is all things Comic books and Marvel. Then you have Ford, who is a sun dance winning director. At first and second interaction there’s a stand-off between the two, until Ford asks Mara on a date. Her tune changed quickly towards him, regardless it doesn’t take away from the fact that they’re adorable together.

Both characters bounce and help one another, they’re both so loveable and just enjoyable to read about. The side characters were all amazing too!

Thank you Netgallery for the Arc.

Mara and Ford

Struggling to keep her comic book shop afloat because it is the last link to her deceased brother Mara has no time for dating.

Ford ducks into her shop to get out of the rain and ends up buying several graphic novels. One was written by Mara’s brother.

Ford, an award winning director is looking for his next project and decides Mara’s brother’s novel would work for him.

I know nothing about comics and graphic novels so I was skimming that part but I liked the main characters. Both Fathers were over the top disagreeable.

Mara is a comic book shop owner who had to give up her dreams for her family. Ford is a movie director who had to give up his family for his dreams. Both has a lot to learn from each other....

Love how their relationship helps each other. Both characters are extremely likable and easy for the readers to care about them. Love their banter too. Really enjoy this fun book.

Thanks to the publisher for the arc.

I liked Mara and Ross, but let me tell you one thing that annoyed me a little about these two - they had no tension. No miscommunication, no worries, no drama.

They just got one another, and perfectly understood one another and were fine.

So sue me, sometimes i like a lil bit of drama and then a lil bit of steam. You just know these two are out there living a perfectly boring life.

100 stars for her dog though - he was my favourite character.

Thank you, Flowers and Fullerton and Netgalley, for the ARC!

The blurb for this book was so interesting I had to check this out. However with the length of the book being more than 400 pages, I found it hard to follow the story line, probably also because the pace is rather slow and points were (to me) not really necessary to be discussed in the book. It's a very slow read to me, however no major plot that made me gasp, but still enjoyable all in all.

*3.5

I liked this but I wanted more from it. There were random time jumps that I don't feel were necessary. Mara and Ford are really cute and I loved that there was no third act break up. It's just that after their first few dates it felt like everything flew by and we were being told about their realtionship more than we were being shown.

I received an arc through netgalley.

I loved this read so much. It was absolutely adorable. It made me swoon and laugh out loud. Also can I just say how much I enjoyed this characters and seeing their story play out. It was so much fun and I didn't want to put this book down. This was a new to me author, but I will definitely be looking forward to more books from them.

I immediately fell in love with Mara and her spunky self. Sheridan Jean builds a strong base of characters and setting. She makes visualizing the story very easy. Ford is a great alpha lead and it is a hoot to watch their relationship blossom.

It was cute, a little repetitive, but I really enjoyed the characters, their back stories, and the main plot. It was a good change of pace from my normal chaotic reads.

Mara owns a comic book store and mostly loves what she does. She left a job she was amazing at to honor a promise and dream she had with her brother. She has a ex boyfriend and father who drive her crazy, but in all she’s surrounded by supportive people. Ford is an award winning director with a supportive family and he has come home for a little break. When he runs into a comic book store to avoid the rain, he has no idea that decision is about to change his life. This was a cute read with a lot going on. There is an emotional story being told with tones of humor and funny banter. The characters were well written and told a great story. I look forward to seeing where this series is going.
