Unhinged (Necessary Evils Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 6,840 ratings

Adam Mulvaney lives a double life. By day, he’s the spoiled youngest son of an eccentric billionaire. By night, he’s an unrepentant killer, one of seven psychopaths raised to right the wrongs of a justice system that keeps failing.

Noah Holt has spent years dreaming of vengeance for the death of his father, but when faced with his killer, he learns a daunting truth he can’t escape. His father was a monster.

Unable to ignore his own surfacing memories, Noah embarks on a quest to find the truth about his childhood with the help of an unlikely ally: the very person who murdered his father. Since their confrontation, Adam is obsessed with Noah, and he wants to help him uncover the answers he seeks, however dark they may be.

The two share a mutual attraction, but, deep down, Noah knows Adam’s not like other boys. Adam can’t love. He wasn’t born that way. But he refuses to let Noah go, and Noah’s not sure he wants him to.

Can Adam prove to Noah that passion, power, and protection are just as good as love?

Unhinged is a fast-paced, roller coaster ride of a romance with an HEA and no cliffhangers. It features a dirty-talking, possessive psychopath and a sweet cinnamon roll of a boy with Daddy issues and a core of steel. There’s gratuitous violence, very dark humor, enough steam to fog up a hundred car windows, and something a lot like love. This is book one in the Necessary Evils series. Each book follows a different couple.

★★★★★ Let me tell you a secret: I am in love with a psychopath and not just one but eight of them because let's be honest, I'm not so sure if Thomas isn't partly there too. ~ Devoted Reader

★★★★★ Have you ever felt like an author looked into some of the... ah... darker corners of your mind and went, "oh, that's the book she wants?" Then they wrote it? I don't think I had until 'Unhinged: Necessary Evil' by Onley James. ~ Kate Reads

★★★★★ Did I binge read in one sitting? Yes. Did I somehow fall in maybe love with a fictional psychopathic killer? Also yes. ~ Rock N Read

★★★★★ A strong fictional tradition exists of rich men "collecting" people to serve their particular purposes. James twists this trope to showcase her specific talents as a writer by creating a family of adopted psycho/sociopaths trained by their father to serve a purpose in society-a necessary evil. Oh, and it's also super gay, super sexy and in turn, tragic and hysterical ~ JL Gribble

I highly recommend this book in Onley James Necessary Evils series. ~ Featherbound Books

★★★★★ Dark, intense and a little twisted. ~ A Paranormal Romance

★★★★★ OMG Onley James has done it again! I loved this SO much! And seriously, how did she make me love a psychopath?! ~ Goodreads reviewer

★★★★★ Addictive and could not put down... ~ Goodreads reviewer

★★★★★ I hate everyone but you" but make it a psychopath/cinnamon roll combo ~ Goodreads Reviewer

★★★★★ A bit dark but deliciously possessive ~ Goodreads reviewer

★★★★★ If this book was written by a less skilled author it could've been dangerous. ~ Goodreads reviewer

Fantastic Beginning to New Series!

Fantastic Beginning to New Series!
This book blew me away. The premise behind the series- seven psychopaths adopted and raised by a billionaire, taught to blend in with society while, er, taking out the trash, is so much fun! I’ve read books with psychopaths who were the heroine- Mallory’s Oracle- and Dexter, but this series is not like those. The humor is excellent, and the characters are much more complex than they may seem at first. Adam Mulvaney is the youngest of the adopted sons. He’s a former model, current playboy, and enthusiastic killer of evil people. But he messed up.And it might have been the best thing he’s ever done.Noah Holt has Adam in his sights, and their meeting is both entertaining and decimating. Adam is intrigued, and for a psychopath who’s never felt much of anything, intrigue is irresistible.

    3rd person/dual pov
    Spice: 4/5

I'm so glad that I finally got around to starting this series. My bestie kept telling me to read it and I kept putting it off but not anymore. I chose to listen to it because she also raved about the narrator and boy she was not wrong. With it being in 3rd person it made it easier for me to listen to it vs reading it on my kindle. I'm not a huge fan of 3rd person unless it's written incredibly well, but I can listen to it just fine. I'll be honest though from what I heard I'm sure I could have read it and been ok even if I thoroughly enjoyed the audiobook.
Adam and Noah are absolutely precious! I love the storyline of Adam's adoptive father training him and his adoptive brothers to hone what makes them different into a weapon that is used to rid the world of evil. It gives you that vigilante feeling that we love about superhero stories without them being actual superheroes. So we still get the bad boy he's just more of a "good" bad boy lol. Then we have sweet and adorable Noah. This poor guy has been through it let me tell you and he stole my heart straight away. I just wanted to wrap him up and hold him my heart hurt so much for him throughout this book. But the way Adam takes care of him and protects him had me and Noah both swooning. None of these brothers are supposed to be capable of love due to being psychopaths but of course, I don't believe that's possible. They may not be as quick to fall as the rest of us with a more normal brain makeup but I don't think they are incapable of love. I guess it just takes the right person; the right connection and it can happen. And granted, they may show it in a slightly different way but deep down it's still love.
The spice was also pretty great and the way the narrator acts it out is well... smokin. Seriously, way to commit my guy because lord have mercy it made things twice as hot as it already was haha! I definitely think this is a good one to listen to over reading. Especially because the narrator has all these different voices for the characters so even if it's one guy performing it you're actually getting as close to a full-cast narration as you can without hiring other people. So well done! I cannot wait to start the next one!

I'm not sure where to start with this series or this book. The words absolutely perfect and stunning come to mind. The story line is wonderful. The character development is just amazing. This book has you falling in love with the family. I swear its like she goes inside your head and picks out your darkest fantasy and brings them to life. The balance between both MMC's is a beautiful thing.

I was 25% into this on Kindle and immediately bought the physical copies. I was hooked immediately. The MM romance was hot, instant, and swoon worthy. Adam and Noah are everything! This is very spicy but it was written well. The spice scenes were at appropriate times and didn't take away from the plot. Yes! There's a plot! And a good one! This book covers dark and disturbing themes but it was so well written that you didn't have to read about the horrific things to feel. Thankfully it was all off page and I appreciate that .. no way could I read a scene of a child being hurt.
During the book I would be annoyed because Adam would tell Noah that he loves certain things he says or does .. but meanwhile, Adam is a psychopath and can't feel love. Thankfully it was explained at the end.
I can't wait to read the rest of this series.

Figured it was time to review this after reading it and listening to the audiobook twice. I probably don’t have any original thoughts on it, I just love it. Onley James has a way to hit that perfect blend of action and romance for me.

My favorite parts of the book are probably whenever Adam seeks help from other people on how to help/be better for Noah, because he doesn’t quite understand it on his own. Psychopath or not, you can’t fault the commitment here. Noah is just a perfect little freckle-faced man who’s a tiny bit broken (for good reason), and he fits so well with the Mulvaney family. Their dynamic of Noah being the boss outside of the bedroom while the stone cold psychopathic killer who looks at him like his mafia queen (Simon from Gentlemen Prefer Villains, anyone?), is the boss in the bedroom, is the cutest thing. I love them both.

I’ve finally started the second book in this series, and I’m so happy about Adam and Noah showing up in that as well.

Oh and of course Liam DiCosimo did a fab job with the audiobook. He always does.

A family of psychopaths is an interesting concept... I really loved the storyline, the overall plot...each brother who can't feel love finds someone they want.
Adam and Noah are just perfect for each other...they both had traumatic childhoods, only difference is Noah didn’t remember his until he went after his father's killer (Adam).

Even though this novel has a high heat level it wasn't bombarded with steamy scenes.
When Adam revealed the truth about Noah's father his memories that he had blocked came back...and eventually a certain project began...

Adam's family are a unique bunch, we got a look into their personalities and I'm excited for each of their stories. I think I'm looking forward to Atticus' story the most and August's...

I definitely recommend this book if you like dark mm romance, with some humor, violence, and BDSM...
