Boneyard Thief: An Urban Fantasy Prequel (Riley Cruz) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 169 ratings

Sixteen was supposed to be about fast cars and first kisses, not plotting a heist that might get me killed.

As a scrawny goat shifter in a pack of werewolves, my role is to get into places they can’t go. The alpha who took me in after my parents died molded me into a master thief. For four long years, he’s lined his pockets, while I’ve taken all the risks.

Now he’s sending me after the magical artifact he’s chased for years. This is my chance to escape. All I have to do is pull off the biggest heist I’ve ever attempted, escape the seethe of vampires I’m about to rob, and ditch the wolves who watch my every move.

To walk away from this job alive, I better prove I’m as good at getting out of trouble as I am at wading into it.

Boneyard Thief is the prequel to the Riley Cruz series about a goat shifter who steals magical artifacts. If you like fun, fast-paced urban fantasy with quirky characters and a dose of slow-burn romance, this is the book for you.

This "origin story" is a lot of fun. Werewolves. Vampires. Witches. And ancient artifacts, plus one tough young woman who is about to get in way over her head. I liked that this was urban fantasy and not PNR, and I liked that it takes place in both Santa Fe and Kansas City, and not the usual LA/NY/Chicago locales. And Riley's a goat shifter in a world of wolf shifters, so that makes her stand out. I'll be moving on to the next book in the series.

I already knew Riley from the Kali James books but this origin story was wonderful... I even teared up when she met the witches. Can't wait for the full length novel.

For those who have read about her in L.A. McBride's other books (which are really fun!) this is how Riley first got to Kansas City as a teenager. She's such a great character, it's nice to see her developed as a product of her past.

I have to admit this book started slow for me and did not get my attention at the very beginning; however, I was wrong. This is a wonderful book with an interesting and charming young shifter as the hero. Once I was into the story, I was really into the story from the beginning to the end. And just a bit of a hint, the ending leads surprisingly well into the next book.

Love love love this prequel. Reason one- we raise goats, so baaaaa. Reason two- the way the author spins a tale drops you right into the world you’re reading. My first time reading anything by L. A. McBride and I am hooked!! I was only disappointed that there is a wait for book one. But that’s ok, I’m reading ALL of the others from the same world.

It was short than expected but i so enjoy when the main character is something other than a wolf. And well was a world that had life than just wolf shifters. Excellent first start.

At first I was sceptical. I mean, a goat shifter? But you know the MC kinda grew on me. Now I can't wait to read the next book

I loved this novella.

It had been sitting in my TBR pile for a while, and I finally got a chance to read it.

So glad I did .

I loved the story building, the backround and the way that Riley was written. I'm excited to see what happens next

She is a goat shifter in the middle of a big werewolf pack. In order to earn her keep she was trained as a master thief and had been working in their pawn shop for years. As her alpha orders her to steal one of the most valued magical artifacts she sees it as her chance to finally escape him. But first of all she has to prove that she’s able to walk away from this alive.

First of all I don’t know anything about the Riley Cruz series and have not read one of the books before. But I really enjoyed the idea of a goat shifter and so I decided to start with this prequel. Riley is a great protagonist. She’s strong, super smart and seems to always find a way out of tricky situation. The book itself is very well written and so the only thing I can complain about is that not a lot is happening. We see her finally escape from the pack and that’s about it. I would have loved to get deeper into her story, but it is a prequel so maybe that’s fair. Overall I enjoyed the story and am looking forward to read more about Riley.
