Disaster #2: Pet Problems

Nolan has been keeping a secret.

In his defense, he wasn't sure if he could trust Sky at first.

And then, well...his life got pretty crazy for a while. He might have just forgotten.

But that secret has come calling and it's about to take a big bite out of Nolan.

Of course, there's no way Sky's going to let anyone hurt his neighbor, friend, and possibly one-day baby daddy. He's hitting back hard to keep Nolan safe.

Even the roses are angry in this one. (Just trust me on this one. Beware of the roses.)

How the Necromancer in the Gold Vest Saved My Life is a serial comprising four novellas that follow the insane adventures of necromancer Skylar Wallace and his next-door neighbor Nolan Banks. This is book two of four and contains vampires, werewolves, witches, underworld minions, danger, a meddling ghost grammy, aggressive roses, and one very angry necromancer. Seriously, nobody better touch his man.

Great story and series. Great author. It's worth reading this book and all of her other books too. This series is wonderful and funny. Laugh through the 2 books so far. Love them. Love the characters. Enjoy 💕 🌻

I think I’ve read all of her series, including the co-writtent ones. I’m fact, I think my introduction was the Unbreakable Bonds series, which I go back and reread occasionally. Her Scales and Spells series with AJ Sherwood seems to have unlocked a level in funny. This was just humorous enough to add cuteness without spoiling all the important stuff. Now that I’m halfway through the serial, I’m looking for the next series.

How the Necromancer in the Gold Vest Saved My Life is a marvelously humorous, sometimes romantic, often horrifying serialized 4 piece story. Last one ending on a cliffhanger!

Which is where Pet Problems picks up. Pets, as in vampire human pets whether they want to be or not. There’s a trigger warning that comes with the story and it’s at the beginning of the book. It concerns a vampire’s actions that are non-con, can be defined as assault. The author mentions where they will occur so a reader can choose to read those pages or not.

It’s totally appropriate.

The book deals with secrets and a huge danger that Nolan has fallen into trying to free his scrounge of a brother from his debts. We get to see more of Nolan trying to deal with a shattering revelation about the paranormal world that has always coexisted with his.

But the real story is Sky. Sky who on the surface is sweet, small, adorable Sky the Necromancer. Here we get to see what’s been bubbling darkly underneath, just emerging in hints with demons who like sandwiches, or shrubbery gone cannibalistic. And it’s wonderful!

Finally! A dark raging necromancer and it’s fabulous! I so wanted more of this Sky! And the blood witch that showed up too. Ok all that is towards the end but what a climax!

The middle of the story is pretty good too. Oh, yes, Nolan does something predictably dumb but you knew that was coming. And since it sets up that amazingly awesome battle? I say let’s do it again.

This series is so much horrifying fun! But a reader needs to remember that it’s dark fiction as well so heed any trigger warnings the author includes.

It’s a definite recommendation. But you need to read them in the order that they are written.

Yay Progress! I love a couple that's protective of each other and there was plenty of that in this installment. I absolutely devoured this book, I mean 118 pages is totally reasonable to red in one sitting without moving, right? I can't wait to read about their date night. The side characters also intrigued me enough that once I'm done with this series I'll likely go back and read the series that features the Varik vampires

One thing’s for certain: Don’t. Stop and smell the roses. At least the ones at Sky’s house, for sure. I am loving the chaotically entertaining adventures of Nolan and Sky, and everything I’m learning about this world.

“I’m only scary when someone tries to hurt those I care about. But for you, I’m a kitten.”
With … sharp claws.

Ha, that’s an understatement and I adore the cheery necromancer and how he’ll do anything to protect his introverted crush. I can’t wait to see what new (mis)adventures are in store next.

Two words to describe Skyler Wallace is sweet and scary. This second installment in this series was amazing. I love both Sky and Nolan, they are perfect and will make the most lovely couple. You will definitely have the same thoughts as you inevitably fall in love with these characters. These books are so well written and easy to fall into that you'll want to read them again. I am now restless to start the next installment. If you love the gooey sweetness mixed with dangerous people and dangerous situations, you'll love this series. Again, well done Jocelynn Drake on a high hitter.

This was frustrating bc the writing and world building are good. I also really like the action/adventure aspects of this story.

What I don’t like are the awkward romantic attempts of the author or the disjointed segues from one scene to another that leave me with more questions than answers.

Again the romance feels like an afterthought and only stuck into the story as a sticking point to drive the plot forward.

Maybe if the romance was a little better I’d give this 4 stars but I just can’t

Another thing. I wanted more magic. Magic is used in the story but it feels 2 dimensional if that makes any sense.

I might read the next book but my hopes for this series have drastically plummeted.

Bjo

This next part of the serial starts off looking a little dark and hopeless; Nolan is a pet to Christoph, and if he talks to Sky they will kill Sky. You can feel Nolan's hopelessness. As much as he wants help out of this situation he also doesn't just want to keep dragging Sky into his messes. He also doesn't want to risk Sky's life, and with how powerful Christoph is that is certainly what it looks like would happen. Lucky for Nolan, Sky is a bit stubborn, and he isn't going to just let another man swoop in if it's not what Nolan wants. Sky is ready to kick some vampire butt whether he has to do it himself or bring in some friends. This was such a fast read but so well done as Nolan gets a real inside crash course of the dark side of the paranormal, while Sky shows that not everyone in the paranormal is cruel and people do want to help. Can't wait to read the next one!
