I really loved Dustin and Charlie's story in the first book of the series, The Husband Game. Nico was a really fun character that seemed a little chaotic in that book, so I was excited to see him get his own book. His story definitely wasn't what I was expecting when I read that this was going to be a player/referee romance, a dynamic I haven't read nearly often enough. My mind screamed conflict-of-interest, but I was really pleased with how this story was told.
It was a series of small lies that lead to the tangled web August and Nico get stuck in upon Nico's release from the hospital. As I was reading Nico's recovery, I was quite worried as to how he was going to handle everything. Would he be angry that his life was flushed into the open for the world to see? Would he send August away? Of course, Brigham chose the perfect path for the characters and they had some forced proximity vibes going there! It was also fun to watch August, who was so rigid about the path he believed his life should follow, take such amazing care of Nico and slowly fall in love with him. August was Nico's safe space, and I think those kind of people are so important. They needed each other!
Although it wasn't easy for them, Nico and August get their well-deserved happily-ever-after. A special scene in the book was Charlie, captain Dustin Fowler's husband, pulling Nico aside during his recovery to give him so advice from his own path to recovery. It was a really touching moment. Brigham also gave us all the feels when Nico relived his accident to understand the impact it had on the people around him. It was a very powerful moment in the book. I can't wait to see where this series goes next!
But Nico had this.
He had August.
He had these perfect little moments with this strange uptight man who pretended to find him irritating but looked at him like he was everything.
