All she has to do is stick to the plan—and stay out of the sexy bartender’s arms.

Sweet story with likable characters. The plot moves along nicely and the characters’ growth is predictable yet satisfying to read.
  • Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2024
I’m torn between 3 and 4 stars, but it was pretty cute, so I’m rounding up. That striking cover caught my eye and the blurb sounded fun, so I dug right into this light and adorable, super slow burn/closed door romance. The hero steals the show here, a commitment-phobic guy who finds himself falling before he even knows what’s happening. The progression from strangers to friends to lovers felt natural, even if the middle portion dragged for me. It’s a pretty classic “dating lessons” storyline, so I can’t really fault it for delivering on that promise, even if it’s the thing I disliked the most. This really shines in the back half when that’s left behind and the relationship is allowed to flourish, which is what got me to raise my rating. It ended on a high note, and was such a low angst, easygoing read with a little bit of swoon.

The story follows Jax, a bartender who has seen the same pretty woman go on dates with an endless stream of guys at his workplace. After Holly’s most recent disappointing first date, the two strike up a conversation. Based on Jax’s appearance and wealth of knowledge, she assumes that he’s a player… and a player may be just what she needs. Holly doesn’t know where she’s been going wrong with dating, and Jax has plenty of advice. Plus, it turns out that Jax is about to become a wilderness guide, and he could use some professional advice from Holly. The two strangers quickly become friends as they work to find Holly a guy, but the right person might’ve been closer than either expected.

While I do think the dating practice went on too long and extinguished some of the chemistry, I knew what kind of story I was getting into, so I can’t fault it for that. I also didn’t love some of Holly’s snap judgments about Jax, but I grew to like her quite a bit. Jax, on the other hand, I loved right away. It was easy to see that he was a better catch than either believed, and he ended up being a total softie for his girl. It’s a slow burn/closed door romance, so the story inherently has a level of sweetness to it, and I wouldn’t have minded some more chemistry early on. But it definitely gets there by the end, and I loved the direction the romance took. All in all, not a homerun for me, but I did enjoy the majority of it.

This romcom has it all in spades. Jax and Holly meet when he rescues her from a very bad date. Their friendship develops naturally and soon he’s agreeing to help her find the perfect man. It’s not straightforward though, as Jax begins to see that Holly isn’t giving herself enough credit for who she is. I loved the banter, the genuine friendship, the siblings (on both sides) and the love story which occurs in such a genuine, natural way. The kayaking was hilarious and the beginning of the realisation of their attraction to one another. I loved the 3 day hike Jax took Holly on - as practise for taking novices for his new adventure business. Brilliantly done and a novel excuse for one tent scenario - didn’t see that one coming at all!
Jax is definitely never getting married or even looking for a serious relationship and Holly wants nothing more than to settle down with a good man and have his babies.
Neither of them are looking for each other but they’re exactly what they both need.
An excellent read from a favourite author.

After multiple date fails trying to find someone to settle down with, Holly enlists the help of Jax, the bartender who rescued her from one of said date-fails. He becomes her dating coach in return for her help marketing his new wilderness guide business. These new friends have instant chemistry but want completely different things when it comes to romantic relationships (she wants one, he doesn't). So they're just friends. Just friends.

I loved this slow burn romance. Jax encouraged Holly out of her comfort zone and to be herself, all the while she was slowly working her way into his heart. Neither of them try to change the other. These two communicate well, tease and have fun. This is such a fun, laugh-out-loud book.

I enjoyed this book, it’s a sweet, low stakes story. I’ll admit I got a bit deterred right at the beginning where Holly and her roommate are eating food like grubs and eating food off the floor - I was a bit put off but! - all the good reviews pushed me through and I’m very glad I did! Jax is a real cutie. I also loved that there was no smut in this book. I think I might start reading more of those as there’s more on the relationship development which I adored. It was a yes from me.
