No Backing Down (Zone Defense Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 285 ratings

When we’re both needy and tactile AF, it’s no wonder everyone thinks my best friend and I are an item. But that’s so not what’s going on.

Cassius Britton, the mouthy basketball player for the Minnesota Eagles, is my soul mate. He has been since he shared his gummy bears and let me have all the red ones.

Because that’s the kind of person he is—selfless and sweet. But he’s so much more than that. He’s the man who rescued me from my homophobic parents. He’s the man who brought me and my sister into his family home and wrapped us in love and sunshine.

All of that, and so much more, makes us soul mates—which doesn’t mean he’s meant to be mine.

And when I become a dad and have to balance being a cop in our small town while dealing with grief, of course he steps up, because that’s who Cassius is.

But when I need to get married, when I need a man to step up and be by my side, maybe Cassius is too close. Too much of a risk.

Because how can I possibly marry my best friend and not start to fall, especially when the secrets between us are so explosive, they’ll either burn us to the ground or set our hearts free forever?

Trigger warnings can be on the Blurb page at the beginning of the e-book or on my website's product page.

I sometimes have trouble finding the time to read. But, put a Becca Seymour book in my hands and I have trouble finding time to do anything else. Another favorite escape, full of twists and turns, and so very worth reading!

Cass and Dylan have been busy friends since childhood.
Cass has always been a shelter for Dylan, having already rescued him as teens.
Dylan once again finds himself in need of rescuing and of course Cass comes riding in.
I loved the natural progression from friendship to lovers and it was very easy to care for these characters.
The connection between them was very realistic and relatable.

Great book. Best friends since childhood. They’ve always been each others person. When the time comes to really test their friendship, there’s no hesitation, they know they have each other’s backs. The Brittons were just fabulous, what every child deserves and no hesitancy in taking two kids that needed love. Dylan and Paula had their second chances at love with the Brittons. Mikey was born of love and couldn’t have asked for two dads that loved him more.

This was a very sweet story of Cassius and Dylan who are childhood best friends.
Cass is Dylan's port haven from his homophobic parents. Cass's parents welcome him as they end up welcoming her sister. These same parents threaten, several years later, the stability of Dylan and son/nephew Mickey (adorable toddler). Cass is the one who comes forward to solve everything. However, a secret haunt both friends.
I really loved Dylan, Mickey, Cass and his parents.

NO BACKING DOWN is the fourth installment in the Zone Defense series. It can be read as a standalone without issue. BUT I after finding these characters fantastic I will be going back to the beginning of the series to get the full effect.

Cassius and Dylan have been friends since they were just kids. They grew up being everything for each other, once declaring they were soul mates. When Dylan came out Cass never blinked an eye and said he was bi. Dylan knew he parents would never accept and they proved just that when they found out, they wanted to send him to conversion camp but Cass's mom stepped in and let Dylan move in with them. And when Dylan's sister finally had enough she also moved in with Cass's family. In all that time Dylan and Cass were never more than friends. Friends that were closer than any other and cuddled more than most couples but things stayed platonic until they didn't.

Cass followed his dream and went on to be a pro basketball player and Dylan a cop. When his sister died in childbirth leaving him to raise his nephew Dylan stepped up to be the best dad he could be. His parents felt they had rights to Dylan's son and wanted to file for visitation. Dylan didn't want them anywhere near his son and knew his sister wouldn't either. With Cass's help they saw a lawyer and he felt they had a solid case but getting married would help solidify things. Cass immediately jumped at the chance and Dylan agreed. What could go wrong with two best friends, soul mates who are attracted to each other spending even more time together raise an adorable little boy together? Or could every thing finally fall in to place?

I was so invested in these characters. I loved everything about Cass and Dylan. How they so easily went from best friends to lovers to everything the other needed. I was immediately pulled in to this story line and enjoyed every emotional twist and turn. I can't wait to go back to the beginning of the series and work my way through Seymour's backlist!

I was given a free copy of this book.

No Backing Down by Becca Seymour is the 4th book in her Zone Defense series. It is the story of 2 men who met when they were young and became best friends and soul mates who knew the other almost better than they knew themselves so they could be there for each other when needed. Dylan Turner grew up with Cassius Britton and from the age of 5 they knew they were BFFs. He spent a lot of time at Cass’s house because his parents weren’t the greatest and when they found out he was gay they tried to take him to a conversion camp. The Brittons took him in because he was family to them, and they took in his sister Paula when she came out a few years later too. Cassius was a basketball player and good enough to make it to the NBA. He played for the Minnesota Eagles which wasn’t far from where Dylan had become a sergeant in their local hometown police department so they saw each other as often as they could, especially when they sensed they needed each other. They dated others but never got very close to anyone and Cass figured out he was bi but after a childhood incident he didn’t go very far with other men, plus he was worried about what would happen to his career if that got out. The two of them never got together because they were worried about what it would do to their relationship, which was very dear to both of them. Then, though a very sad incident, Dylan became the father to a newborn who was the light of his life. But his parents wanted to get involved and the solution to keeping them away was for him to get married. Of course, being the person he was, Cass stepped up and took charge. Through the rest of the book they lived together and leaned on each other. Cass became a wonderful dad to Mikey which endeared him even more to Dylan. And as time went on they both realized they wanted this to be a real marriage and not a fake one. Their love also translated into many hot love scenes as they expressed what they meant to each other in physical terms and it made the story that much better. I really enjoyed this book. The characters went through so much yet their love for each other, be it their best friends love as well as their mature love shown through in everything they did. They were both snarky and there was often lots of fun involved but there was also some of angst over what they had to do to keep Dylan’s parents away from them. There was joy in many of the situations they found themselves in as well as sadness with what happened to Dylan’s sister and how that colored what they did with their lives. Mikey was a cute as could be and their friends were also helpful. Cass’s parents also showed what it meant to be a family, especially when they took in Dylan and Paula and also with Mikey, who they considered to be their grandson. And there were some surprises that were slowly revealed with some worry about how they would affect their relationship. I highly recommend this story as it is very heartfelt and emotional at times yet always has love and happiness at its core. It is going to stay with me for a long time and I’m sure I will be rereading it.

I loved Dylan and Cassius, I loved their friendship which had been strong since childhood, I loved they had each other's backs entirely, I loved their romance and watching them fall in love. They always knew they were soulmates it just took them a while to realise it romantically. I wish they'd talked to each other about how they wanted it to be real, but they eventually got there.

I adored Mikey, he was such a cute kid and I loved seeing both men interact with him. I liked the epilogue that lets us glimpse the future of them all.

This was full of sweetness and sexy times, some awful interactions with people who weren't fit to call themselves parents, but mostly a lovely low-angst read.

I've enjoyed this whole series and it's spin-off and I hope there will be more to come.

MM, Friends to Lovers, Contemporary, Sports, Romance. The fourth book in the series but reads extremely well as a stand-alone, the characters have been friends from childhood and you get the feeling while reading their story of their closeness. I love the amount of information given throughout and I felt a connection to them as I read, a page-turner with lots of emotional times..good and bad, some tear jerky moments and lots of love and support. Guaranteed HEA.
