- Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhat wouldn't be wonderful about a dragon shifter mating with the last shifter of his kind. General Jaega saves Ferson both from slavery and from being attacked from one of his soldiers. He feels protective of Ferson. And soon they can't resist their attraction to each other.
I enjoyed the story. It left me wanting more since it ended a bit abruptly, and I felt like Jaega and Ferson's story wasn't complete. It seems that it continues. In the meantime, the last chapter sets up the next story.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2024Format: KindleVerified Purchase3.75⭐️ Interesting kind of prequel to the Bonded Hearts series. Jaega rescues Fersen and is immediately in protective mode while his dragon insists that Fersen is his mate. This is a fated mates/instalove story with lots of sweet moments, gentle and sexy spice, found family vibes and so many questions to get you ready to read the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI didn’t enjoy it as I thought I would. The premise sounded fantastic, but the story was a bit of a letdown. Which is understandable because it’s a prequel. Most of all I was just really annoyed by how repetitive it was. Mentioning something once or twice is totally fine but doing it more than four times in one chapter just irks me. The story also didn’t flow well. You could tell it was written by two different people. Overall, it was a mid read.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was a quick, sweet read. Little to no angst, and just a bit if spice. Despite that the characters and their relationships were well developed. There was no cliffhanger perse but enough intrigue at the end to keep me wanting to read the series. A good buy if you want a feel good, light read.

The last unicorn.
Fated mates.
A mate who died during the Necromancer War.
A dragon prince.
There is pain. There is love. There is a bond that cannot be broken.
I really liked this prequel to the Bonded Hearts series.
Thank you GRR for this ARC!

- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2024Format: KindleThis is the prequel to a new series, that sounds quite interesting. Jaega is a general and a dragon shifter from Valzerna, his brother is the king. They invade Saldorn to eliminate an evil scorpion shifter king. In the process he rescues Fersen a unicorn shifter held captive and the last of his kind. This is the story of fated mates discovering each other with a happy ending.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2024Format: KindleSo this book has definitely piqued my interest and curiosity. I like Jaega for Fersen. I like seeing them together, but I wanted to see more of them. I'm curious where future books in the series will go. Jaega seems to have a large family so there's no telling what they will get up to. I really love his niece Kizoshi and hope to see more of her interactions with her brothers. There are lots of names introduced, but thankfully there is a glossary at the end. I really appreciate the pronunciation included in this gloassry as I always want to read people's names correctly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite standalone
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis story felt that it didn't quite work, in part because it claims to be a standalone. This is supposed to be a prequel to a series but one that can stand up on its own, however it feels like there is information missing both at the beginning and end that seems dependent to the rest of the series.
It does start rather interesting, what with an army having just finished freeing a country from a vicious king and the general finding within a man who had been kept in chains by that king. This man is nearly abused by his own men and the general seeks to right that wrong. This man seems to have secrets and soon the two become close and it seems that they may have a connection that is entirely unexpected. This is all interesting, but there are multiple references to history that we don't know about and don't get to learn too much about despite being very important. This wouldn't be too bad if it weren't for the fact that it then leaves it open ended again once the two first get together and then there are hints to how they will figure out a life together, but it is left open because that would apparently lead too much into the series. It went from a contained story only following the one pair to suddenly opening it up to the whole royal family and then just ending on a cliffhanger.

2.0 out of 5 stars decent
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseLiked the characters a lot. Two main issues for me: the names! Especially the siblings. Omg a lot to keep track of and get mixed up. Also found that this ends abruptly.
