When I'm on the mood for a cozy visit to a small town with characters I like and a mystery that's full of clues, the Spicetown series is the perfect fit!
I love reading about adventures of the crime solving duo of Mayor Cora Mae Bingham and Chief Conrad Harris. The supporting characters - Amanda, Brian, Saucy, Wink, Rodney and the others are lovable and just a little quirky. If you've lived in a small town, you'll recognize them all.
When a notorious "louse" of a man is murdered, the Mayor and Chief set out to find the killer. I liked the addition of the characters of Nellie and Tommy. Their part in the book was very creative. I hope to see more of them. The hubbub surrounding the statue of the town's founder, John Spicer, was wonderful...small town politics at their worst and best!
The mystery is welll written and entertaining. With Cora Mae and Conrad having different investigative styles, the book keeps you on you reading "toes"!
Waiting impatiently for another visit to Spicetown!
I’ve enjoyed this cozy mystery set is the small town of Spicetown. The chief of police and the mayor do work quite well together to methodically work through the details and solve the case.
Sheri Richey has done a great job of building up the characters and their relationships. I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next for this small town.
Nicole KandeLind provided a great performance. She really brought the story to life.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.
I love this clever, witty and engaging book which takes you on an adventurous tour through small town America with many interesting and lovable characters. On the whole, the Spice town mystery series is different from other cozies I have read in that the usual formula of one more body found is not the norm. I' m looking forward to the next title.
I am beginning to think , "Well, that was different", will be the norm for all the books in this series! The characters are very interesting and the mystery is always full of twists and the unexpected.
2nd book in the Spice Town series. The setting is a small town in Ohio. The founder last name was Spicer so the town was named after him. The streets are named after spices ..cute little mystery series. The Mayor and Sheriff are the main characters but there is mention of quite a few others that have back stories as well. If you like cozy mysteries this is a cute one. On to book 3!
The Fourth of July is approaching, and Mayor Cora Mae Beckham is excited to finally have her wish of a statue to the founder of the town fulfilled. It's going to be quite the celebration with a parade, followed by the unveiling and a craft fair, carnival and ending with fireworks.
Cora and her assistant have been passing out handfuls of flyers to the businesses in town showing the parade route and the other activities for the day. She runs in to Conrad 'Connie' Harris, the police chief in front of the Sweet and Sour Spice Shop. He's staring at a bunch of motorcycles gathered outside there. Cora is about to go inside when there's a huge crashing sound from the inside. Conrad tries to beat her to the door but she gets there first.
A man had fallen and crashed into a large table of spices. He was apologetic and offers to pay for the damages telling the manager Karen Goldman to send the bill to him, Booze Lockhart at the Nutmeg Inn, since he apparently forgot his wallet.
We meet Nellie and her brother Tommy in this book, Nellie walks around town taking pictures with a camera albeit with no film. Her brother Tommy is autistic and just follows her around.
The arrival of the Spicer family, John Michael Spicer, his wife Ellen and teenage grandson Bradley, lightens everyone's mood as the excitement grows. Cora, Conrad, Amanda and Bryan take them out to dinner. Bradley asks a lot of questions about his ancestor, and all is going well until Conrad gets a message and has to leave. There's a body in the alley behind the Nutmeg Inn.
As Conrad investigates the death, Cora pulls together the last of the details for the festivities. The disgruntled city councilman Larry Langley manages to cut the funding for the extra security.
After speaking with Ned, the city attorney, Cora sends out a call for volunteers to police the festivities. The response is just as expected with many wanting to help out the community.
There is much intrigue and suspense surrounding the death of Booze Lockhart and many threads to untangle there. The festivities go off without a hitch and everyone has fun. We learn something very interesting about Nellie's brother Tommy as well.
I am enjoying these mysteries and have already started the next book.
While I liked this story overall, the ending is still rather muddled for my taste. I enjoyed this story and found it as well written as the first two. Characters were believable, and so were town politics. There were a lot of interesting things going on in the town as well as the crime.
I had a hard time following the confusing stories the various suspects were giving and it seems the police chief made more good guesses than actually having solid evidence. He has satisfied himself that there was a crime and the guilty party's been nailed, but 'proof of intent' seems fuzzy to me. I think a good defense lawyer could break this case.
Cora is the mayor of the small town of Spicetown, and Conrad is the Chief of police. Together they keep their little town safe. Its the fourth of July and the town is not only celebrating the holiday, but the founder of the town. While preparing for the celebration a man named Booze is found dead behind the hotel. Cora and Conrad try to find out who may have wanted Booze dead. The suspects are cropping up everywhere. Will they find the killer and find out the motive behind it all? Read it and find out! I enjoyed reading book three of this series and the characters in the story.
Considering the plot of this book the story is actually rather long. Lots of details that really don’t seem to matter to the mystery. The addition of the Turners really didn’t add to the story , it was just extra words
This story is a fun one, continuing the saga of Spicetown in a fun way. There are twists and turns in this story, definitely a few outcomes I didn't expect. I loved the enthusiasm of the Spicers' grandson!
