- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2019Calculated Risk is the start of a new four-book series and if this book is anything to go by, the series is going to be off-the-charts amazing! This is a fast-paced read that sucks you in from the first page. There is an air of urgency in every action Bree takes and a constant threat of danger hanging over her head that has followed her around from childhood; one misstep is all it would take for her life to be over so she has to be very thorough, calculated, and detailed in every move she makes. My heart ached for her when she was retelling events from her past. It was extremely telling and insightful into the woman she has grown into. She is definitely an interesting character and even though several details were shared about her past, it still feels like there is more to know so I hope more will be revealed in the future installments of the series.
Bree and Tanner had great chemistry and a sweet romance building and I look forward to seeing how it progresses in future books. I loved the fact that the romance was not immediate or forced into the fray of everything else going on in the story. The slow pace Crouch has started for their relationship fits perfectly under the circumstances and is relatable and believable.
There is plenty of excitement and a lot of laughs in this exciting adventure. The characters are down to earth and likable and Crouch does a wonderful job with the plot. It is well-written with a continuous buildup of suspense and keeps you engaged until the end. I could not turn the pages fast enough in this story. There is so much to say but I do not want to say more to avoid spoilers. Overall this is a fantastic read and I cannot wait to see what is in store next for Bree and Tanner.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2019I have adored Janie Crouch’s Linear Tactical series, so I was excited to try a new series by her. Especially a series where we’ll get to see the same characters book after book.
The plot follows a small town sheriff who runs into a down on her luck single mother. His Spidey senses tingle, in more than the romantic way, and Sheriff Dempsey finds himself in the middle of something far greater than his small town. The twists and turns the plot provides are amazing and keep the reader on their toes.
Bree is a bright and loyal woman hiding from a crazy past. She has so many secrets upon secrets to deal with it. Tanner is not only a good guy in a small town, he’s a family man with an amazing set of loyalty and morals. The characters in this story were so much more than just Bree and Tanner. The townspeople and town itself play such an important role to the story!
Tanner seems to fall for the shoplifting Bree right away. Bree has had less relationship experience, and her life has led her to not want any… But neither seems to be able to stay away from the other. And despite the crazy mystery and circumstances thrown in their way, they can’t stay away from each other. Their chemistry makes the romance part of this story work so well. It’s not forced, it fits in with the plot and adds to it well.
This was the perfect blend of romance and mystery. Just enough of both to keep the other in check. I read it quite quickly and was able to keep it all straight while reading. It was fun to see a few cameo’s by Linear Tactical characters.
I can’t wait to see what else these two have in store. Because I’m sure these two are the sort of people that have things happen to them without them meaning to. Though I hope we also get to read about a story about Noah soon!

- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2023I have loved the Linear Tactical books and wanted to read everything in order (as she suggested on her website). I was unsure about this series at first as we had never heard much about Tanner, except in passing, and nothing on Bree. But Janie Crouch did not disappoint. I read the book in one sitting. Intense suspense that never got boring. I absolutely adore Tanner, Bree, Mr. and Mrs. A. Can't wait for the next one!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2020I love this series by Janie Crouch! I started it on book four and I'm so glad I went back and started it at the beginning. This was another devour it in one night kind of book and while I'm a little tired this morning, it was totally worth it!
I love Bree. She's the perfect heroine in that she's tough, knows she has to be strong, doesn't complain, and just gets things done. She might need a little help to do it, but it isn't because she didn't try.
Tanner. Sigh. A definite good guy who's willing to do anything to help Bree and her babies, regardless of how she came to be in Risk Peak.
I love that this series is a slow burn and that I always have another one to look forward to. If you love Harlequin Intrigues then you definitely want to start the Risk Series today!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2021This book was okay. Not nearly the caliber of the Linear Tactical series which I love. I was disappointed and sorry that I paid for two of the books in this series, much to my chagrin. Too bad they were not available with Kindle Unlimited. Then, when I'm not liking a particular book, I can just send it back and not waste my money on a book that was just "okay".

5.0 out of 5 stars A great suspense story!
A great suspense story that kept me gripped from start to finish. A very relatable plot based on today's society with lots of action and suspense. Bree has a genius IQ and because of it never really has a 'normal' childhood and has spent much of her life on the run, always looking over her shoulder, never staying in one place too long. Strong and brave Bree trusts no one and has difficulty being around other people and socially and emotionally interacting with them. On the run again, nearing exhaustion Bree winds up in a small town where Deputy Tanner makes the decision to help her not arrest her for shoplifting. The chemistry between Tanner and Bree is instant but she struggles to trust him because of her issues. However, much Tanner is drawn to Bree and he wants to protect her his instinct tells him she is trouble and is hiding so much more than she tells. Can Bree learn to trust and rely on others and can Tanner keep her safe?
A well written story with great characters, plenty of action and excitement and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series and getting to know Tanner and Bree better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant read.
I started this series backwards by mistake. Absolutely loved this first instalment. Bree is a character that you can empathise with. Tanner is a man with a decent solid core. Lots of action.

5.0 out of 5 stars Calculated Risk
I have enjoyed reading this first book in a new series in the Risk Series, I was so engrossed in reading it that I had to finish reading it before I could put it down. I can't wait for the next book to come out so I can read it to. I would recommend it to anyone who likes to read about different story's in different county.

3.0 out of 5 stars Romantic Suspense
I found the story a bit plodding and lacking in energy. I usually enjoy this author but it lacked drama and suspense for me.
