Really good collection of short stories. I had read a few individually recently but this was a chance to finally read them all. As with any short story collection I liked some better than others, but they were all so varied and interesting the collection overall was great. There were a few guest stories from other authors included, and the stories fit right in. There's a little bit of something for everyone: monsters, gore, humor, even a few with happy endings.

If you enjoy horror short story collections, you really need to read this one as it's one of the better one's Ive read.

Well I have a confession to make I was 75% into this book of short horror stories when my kindle keyboard died and nothing I could do would revive it....electric shock treatment...stimulation...even talking to it nicely it all failed and so while I wait for a new kindle to arrive from ebay I thought I would share my pleasantly surprised thoughts and review with you!

I say pleasantly surprised because so often when reading a compilation of short horror stories my thoughts are mixed. Some stories are reasonable, some are mediocre and naturally some are poor. However IRW appears to have produced a near perfect set of highly original and most certainly very exciting little gems. I particularly enjoyed H is for Hell when Barbara is having a bad day and encounters a lonely tramp and what follows is a brilliant Groundhog tale of woe. In N for Noddy a young drunken drugged teenager must face the consequences of a forgotten night out with friends and how a decision taken in haste can destroy a life. I is for Ice is a particularly good example of how to snare a reader from the opening paragraph..Peter wakens up to find Doctor Faraday soothing his brow and encouraging him to consume a special blue drink. A lovely unexpected twist at the end creates a classic little tale.

So I have decided for the reasons stated to review this book having not quite completed it. I have no reason to doubt that the last 25% is equally brilliant and look forward to reading more by this exciting young English author in the very near future.....

IRW never disappoints

I loved each and every A-Z story. Both of the D's were great! Sad this series is over but I'll definitely be re-reading this collection. Thanks for the gross outs, terror, humor & entertainment Mr. W! Highly recommend this to all fans of modern horror!

I love Wright, he's such a talented author, but this collection didn't feel like his to me. It was good enough, jam packed with stories, but none of them particularly great. Some were fun and cheesy Bmovie horror, but otherwise unremarkable.

Meh

The stories are pretty much 50/50. Half of them were pretty good the others were awful. You kind of expect that in short story compilations though.

I’ve read my fair share of horror anthologies and I’d rank this one as one of the best. Genuinely felt uneasy during some of them and others had me laughing out loud. Books should be fun to read and this delivered.
I couldn’t help noticing though that although I really enjoyed every story, they seemed to get less interesting the further down the alphabet I got. Not bad, just some were a little meh..hence my 4 stars and not a solid 5.
Faves of the lot were: feral, orifice, peeling, bogeywoman, genome. There was another one about a post apocalyptic earth plagued by aggressive animals which for some reason when I flick back through my kindle is no longer in the book and instead is a story I’ve not read? No idea what’s happened there!

4.5/5. I received a free audiobook copy in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this collection of horror stories! There were the 26 A-Z stories, plus a few bonus stories. My favorites were A is for Antichrist, B is for Bogeywoman, G is for Genome, and M is for Matty-Bob. There were only two or three stories I couldn't connect with, but I will definitely reread this book and each story. I would recommend this book for any fan of horror.

As with all anthologies, there were some really great ones and some filler ones. A couple really got to me though so 4 stars!

I was provided an audible credit in exchange for my honest review of this book. It is below.
I'm not honestly sure what part of this was meant to be horror. Most of it was juvenile Java, references to genitals, sex with minors and stories with either no movement whatsoever or a lot going on that made little sense.

Between the "cannabis kills" message of one story and the self insert fiction where this self published nobody compares himself to Stephen King and brags about his penis size...none of these stories had any kind of subtlety. None of them had a hint of development or originality.

It was mostly tripe and I honestly rolled my eyes through most of this. What wasn't garbage was borderline plagiarized from other authors or movies. Ultimately his style falls far short of what is normally read cheerfully. Tons of mentions of Google, Facebook, Twitter, iPhones and other fads got in the way of really immersing myself in the stories. I don't give a damn about the product your characters use. You have maybe 30 pages to tell me a story and you're pushing this instead of detail that matters?

The guy also uses the same odd phrases multiple times throughout the stories, making the reader think (mistakenly) that the might be connected. But they aren't, it's just weak writing exemplified by the author's inability to sound like anyone other than himself.

Overall, this collection comes across as being written by a man with a far higher opinion of himself than is merited... while having a very low opinion of more successful writers as he disparaged then in favor of pushing the ludicrous idea that vanity press publication is incredibly lucrative. I have friends who are self published... It will not make you a lot of money unless you have incredible luck and outreach.

The reader, on the other hand, was rather good. The only pointer that I would offer him is to go ahead and do multiple takes and focus on what accent he wants to use. In one, he used an "American accent" (flat inflection with a slight New York sound) only to reveal that the story was set in the English countryside. That seemed to throw the reader a bit and his own natural tone came back off and on for the rest of the story. Otherwise, he was great and I would be more than interested in hearing more of him. With better authors, of course.

This is only my personal opinion. If this collection worked for you on any level, that's awesome and I'm happy for you. I just prefer more cerebral horror that doesn't have to rely on tearing down more successful authors in order to be edgy.

The best part of this book was where he had other authors' stories.

I promised an honest review and that's what this is. Thanks!

Rereading this book, I didn't like it nearly as much as the first time and while I was disappointed by this change in myself, it didn't take me long to figure out why my feelings had changed.
Most of the impact of both horror and short stories comes from the shock factor and twists and this time I didn't even relive that.
I reread books a lot so this was unusual for me.
This time, however, since I wasn't racing through the alphabet of stories to find the next 'horrifying' moment, I had an epiphany- every single character in this book is awful.
I want to be able to root for at least one character and seeing so many idiotic and/or cynical and/or super annoying characters back to back quickly became exhausting.
I couldn't even enjoy their 'bad ends' because the characterisation felt like a rouse to enhance the effect of the bloodshed, violence and general terrible times for all involved.
I think I would have been more invested for this reread had I found some more likeable characters sprinkled in for heart wrenching distress when everything goes wrong.
For me, I want horror to cause an emotional and mental reaction in me and this just didn't do that for me. I prefer the psychological thrills rather than just reading about physical brutality by other people and actual monsters. Sometimes being left to imagine a monster can be scarier than seeing (or reading) about one.
Maybe my tastes have just changed more than I thought over the last year? This isn't a bad collection, I'm glad they were all compiled, but unfortunately though I like the genre, this time around, this book just wasn't my cup of tea/blood/surprise swarm of living insects now swarming inside my mouth *cue bad ending for me*
Overall though I still loved some of this books more genuinely creepy and creative ideas.

Amazing!!!

Wow--this was a great book. I love how some of the stories have a subtly creepy feel. But even more, I love how most of the endings do a complete turnaround, and end up being more surprising than I ever thought possible. I would definitely recommend this compilation to all lovers of great horror fiction--you will not be disappointed.

As near a complete collection of horror stories as you'll find, the stories and their subjects range from the Antichrist to Zion, with all manner of beasties and open sores in between. The writing is strong, and the voice individual. I didn't lose interest for a moment, each story was fascinating and unique. It must be hard in a collection of this sort not to veer between close subjects and just sort of tell the same story from a different angle. None of that here.

I was a little perplexed by the self-insert of the author into a stalking story. Though, I imagine the intention was to discombobulate the reader in order to better identify with the author-character and his sudden introduction to a stalker. In which case, he succeeded with aplomb. A couple of spelling errors which I'm sure are only noticable to me, because sadly, that's who I am. Heck of a lot of eye-rolling (twenty-five instances by my count) but I think that was nicely balanced out by all the mutilations. Three excellent bonus stories by guest authors, as well as a urinary tract infection. What else do you need?

I learned about this British horror novelist before Christmas last year. During the last semester, I wanted to enjoy reading, but I didn't have time for long fiction, so I chose to read short stories. The first few stories reminded me of various B-grade horror movies I had watched before, full of sex, profanity, and blood, most of which couldn't be called terrifying, even some clichéd, but did create some visual sense. As it was the original English version, many profanities were known to be vulgar, but I wasn't clear on what exactly was cursed. I just felt that the protagonist was in a state of helpless rage. There were religious legends, biological mutations, and several heartwarming stories, with different styles, a bit like a collection of works in which the author was trying various experiments.

I received this audible book for an honest review. This collection of short stories was highly entertaining for the most part. Many of the stories were fun to follow and gave very unique plotlines. I would honestly put those closer to 3.5 Stars but the narrator of the audible book bumped it up to a four Stars review. The only problem I had was many of the stories had gross-out body horror and involved some very delicate subject matters. I feel as though I'm pretty tough when it comes to gross out horror, but I felt like Mr. Wright relied on the subjects to scare people for more of the stories then I felt was necessary. Other than that, these will give the reader new experiences for they are not your average horror stories.

What I like about Wright is that he doesn’t waste time trying to compensate for his weaknesses. These stories are mostly all slipshod: poorly written, carelessly edited, and not very original. But they’re distracting enough.

Some are better than others. The worst is a “comic” tale of Wright meeting his number one fan: some kind of nightmare manchild slightly less believable than Bigfoot. Eyes weren’t made to roll this hard, Mr. Wright. Nearly as bad is the story in which an insult comic is attacked by a bunch of batshit women set out to prove how not batshit they are. It’s the kind of story where you can’t tell if the author is making fun of some women for being overly sensitive or some men for being pussy-whipped since he’s doing such a shit job at both.

SPOILERS: This contained all of the A-Z stories, so I read this as only A and D are currently easily available.
Also X, and Z aren’t currently available to review separately. There’s also an alternative version of D by a different author as the original D is for degenerate was apparently banned. Here they are:

D is for detour

One of the best. Predictable, but well written. A woman wakes up and is visited by 3 different people including a doctor. Turns out she murdered her family, and the people visiting her are versions of herself she created to avoid facing what she’s done. The doctor is the only real person.

X is for X-22

Is a predictable story of an unbalanced genius creating a super robot as a means of redemption for himself in the form of achieving his goal and getting the positive attentions of his ex-employer: the MOD.
The robot (X-22) is too perfect and follows the orders of the highest ranking army officer, the creator is a colonel, so is outranked by his boss who is a major. Which seems like a massive plot hole, or I guess a sign of the creator’s delusion that the army wouldn’t try and take his creation on their own terms.

Y is for Yeti

This was an unusually lighthearted story, compared to its predecessors. Young man moves into his first house, and is warned by his neighbour and his neighbours mentally challenged son to beware of the yeti at night.
The guy thinks screw that and assaults the yeti (as you do). Turns out the yeti is the mentally challenged son who goes into some kind of trance at night and doesn’t know he’s the yeti.
The guy feels bad so asks the father what he can do. The father tells him the guy has to replace his son as the yeti for the next week whilst the son recovers, so as to maintain his belief in it.

Z is for Zion

I had to re-download the book as I’d forgotten this story, as it was such a non-event.
I think there’s a character called Damien who features in a series of Iain Rob Wright’s books, and this story features him.
This is the most pointless story of them all. Damien dies and meets the devil (Lucas, sigh) as a barman and agrees to forgo heaven to fight alongside Lucas in a war across parallel universes. That’s it. This could have been summed up in a paragraph in a bigger book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I’d heard of Wright before, and this generous collection of stories went on sale for 99 cents, so I decided to give it a try. Most of the stories are drenched in sex and gore, apparently targeting an audience of unsophisticated 14-year-old boys. The book has a wide variety of stories, with monsters, demons, murderers, diseases, and ghosts, but most are crude, predictable, or derivative. Still, Wright scores points for taking this ambitious project to completion, and there were plenty of chills for the price, including several bonus guest stories. I’ll wait to judge Wright after I read one of his many novels.

This is the first collection of short stories that delivers awesome reading in every incredible story if you have read any of IRW's work in the past you know he always delivers an attention grabbing tale. But, A-Zach of Horrors exceeds all expections. That should be enough said but I feel compelled to include the fact that most of these will made me more than a little scared. However , U is for Urinary Tract terrified me as well as COMPLETELY freaked me out plus it has horrible, horrifying gross factors. Quick, go get this book. I loved it.

Unbelievable imagination and horror

I gave this 5 star for the sheer imagination and twisted stories. As horrified as I was at the end of each story I was still eagerly waiting on the next, thinking there was no way he could top that. I was wrong. Mr Wright could and did top each successive story. I was so entertained, amazed and compelled to continue reading. I will be reading the rest of his work! The stories were so unique, had such twisted endings and made me wonder how a mind could dream this way.

A Delightfully Dark Read.

I discovered this author after reading A is for Antichrist. I was keen to read the entire book. Iain Robb Wright shows a brilliant imagination with this diverse collection of stories. His descriptions are minimal, preferring to launch the reader right into the action which I love. P for peeling was a particular favourite. I'd recommend this one for fans of the short story.

An Alphabet of Sheer Terror!

Such a fun ride! The stories are so different from one another that you tend to forget it's the same author writing them. I had tried to read 'D' is For Degenerate previously, but chickened out after the first couple of pages...this collection of short stories made me go back and read it, and, boy, am I glad I did! Thanks for the laughs, the scares, and great story-telling.

I struggled with rating this one.

This is a short story collection that was very mixed for me. The stories were really varied and used so many sub genres in horror, there was use of a clown, exterminator, hauntings, body horror, thriller which means something for everyone.

There was definately some 4 and 5 star stories in here but others didnt really connect with me.

Definately worth a read if your a horror fan.

extremely varied in content

An extremely varied selection of short stories in content. From devil children to killers that have forgotten as their minds closed down in shock. Not bad plots, not especially well written either. Some of the endings are a bit lame but generally it’s an okay anthology of shorts to dig in and out of when you have the time. Not special but acceptable.

Another great book by Iain...

This was a collection of different types of stories, and most were pretty short, but we'll worth the read, some were better than others, but a very eclectic collection of what Iain writes. I enjoyed this and read between 3 and 4 stories each night and thought it was very good. I have read a lot of his stuff and plan to read it all or as much as I can, he is very good and very interesting and so far I have liked all that I have read by him.
