i LOVED this book so much, this is an underappreciated fiction i hope there will be a sequel, it was short thou,i had so many unanswered questions !

Can you imagine waking up one day and going to work, and on your way you meet a naked man lying beside a lake and he turns out to be a demon and he's mission is to protect you and you are not just an ordinary 16 year old, you're a key to unleash a great power of magic on earth ! man i had goosebump just reading it :D, it's been forever since i read books about demons and hell and heaven witches, God i miss it.

“You were willing to sacrifice yourself to The Saint. You showed me what humanity is capable of—compassion, courage, strength. Centuries spent defiling mankind, and I never once understood its beauty. My memories are fuzzy, but they do not seem my own. I am not Manah. He is gone, and I will never allow him to take another breath.”

Manah « Sorrow » is a demon, one of the vilest creatures ever to walk this earth and he’s mission was to protect scarlet from the saint, Saint was sent to kill her, he is an agent dedicated to carrying out the Father’s will, now The Father is one powerful force of many, he is the guardian of our world and protector of mankind. i can't say much about the story without spoiling everything :D it's a very enjoyable quick read, i highly recommend

Well I'll give this book one thing, it was quick I read it in like 3 hours.

i went into this book not knowing anything, a friend give me it and said nothing about it.... but I hope she didn't pay to much for it. where do I start? the bad? Or the good? how about the bad since that will take the longest. So first off the pasting was so so off, things that needed to be explained slowly when to quickly. And the thing that the reader figured out about 10 pages before took forever to be confirmed, and it felt like every two seconds the characters were getting beat-up. You never got to rest and think about what just happened in the last fight. And the story... the thing is the story idea was really fun, and if it had been written a little better and thought out more it could have been an amazing series. Like a 3 to 6 book series with spin-offs. That's how much was in this little 170-page books plot and it really feels like it still could happen if the writer maybe rewrites this. Now for the good. I loved the characters Scarle was funny at the right times and took action at the right time. She did cry I lot but I don't think I would have been different. Sorrow was your atypical alpha male who was made with two one thing in mind being a bodyguard for Scarle and being the love interest. Which is fine by me I don't mind an alpha male....as long they have something else going for them and.....he didn't but I still laugh with his one-liners so there's that. overall I would look to see a real series come out of this book, with more development and a little better writing.....But don't think that will happen

"So, putting my young (forty-seven-year-old) head on and being objective, yes this is a good book. Like I said before, the plot and story line is imaginative and unique in the sense of how it is twisted a little bit. It just didn’t read like an Iain Rob Wright book to me. Even with it being written for a younger audience, I felt the narrative was at times a bit stuttering and not very free flowing. The dialogue at times was a bit over childish for me as well."

This audiobook was nice. I liked the idea, when you cannot tell for sure who is good and who is pure evil. I don't see something like that in books. It was kind of refreshing to read. And I really want it to be a series)

Just finished reading “Wings of Sorrow”, by Iain Rob Wrightt, a horror fantasy. Well, things just got stranger and weirder in Redlake, but that seem to be the norm for that place. It’s a battle between good and evil, where it's hard to tell which side is good and which side is evil, or is it that evil is good and good is evil?... And, it looks like it will continue to get stranger and weirder...and that’s a wonderful thing. Another great read by a great writer.

Synopsis: Growing up is hell.

Good read page turner

Scarlet is a teenage girl who had her fair share of difficulties. So when her life becomes crazy whirl of good and evil it gets even harder. Finished it in a day, just had to know...

Second read update: so I listened to the book this time around, and I finished it. YA is still not my favorite genre. There's a lot here that caused me to go, "huh?" And it seems like all of the characters jump out of character depending on the scene/situation. Glad it's over.

DNF @ 18%, no rating given.

YA is definitely not my ball o' wax, and this book is typical YA. The part that I read wasn't bad, but I'm not the target audience, far from it. I'm thinking that I should have picked a different book as an introduction to Iain Rob Wright. Oh, well.

"You are more than just a girl, Scarlet. You are the first magical being born in a millennia, and you have the power to change everything." Generally, words like this will send me running for the hills. I received this book to beta review, however, and I was happy to finish it. Scarlet has found herself in a battle with Good and Evil forces and she needs to fight to save her own life.

I enjoyed this book, which appears to be the first in a series. It is a change of pace coming from Mr. Wright, who is one of my recent favorites in the horror genre. While the fight scenes were a bit long for my liking, the book was nicely written and briskly paced. I look forward to the next book in the series.

I usually enjoy his horror novels and honestly did not know this was a young adult story until the end. For a YA fantasy story it was not bad. I thought that some of the dialog was a bit forced, corny at times, but the plot was overall interesting.

Scarlet is just like any other sixteen year old girl. She lives with her dad and they've recently moved to a new town. Scarlet has managed to nab a part time job at a local shop run by Mr. Chester, who is a bit eccentric, just like his wares. Everything is normal. Until one day, it's not. Walking home from work Scarlet is caught off guard when she sees a man drowning by the lake, rushing to help him, she finds him naked and confused. He has no memory of anything, not even his name, but he knows he has a purpose. Fast-forward to the following day and Scarlet meets another man by the lake, only this one is not as kind as the first. He instantly takes to attacking her, calling her The Spark, and saying that she needs to be destroyed. Rushing to work, she finds much more than she bargained for. Her entire world turned upside down, what is a sixteen year old girl to do? Does she forfeit her own life on the chance that something bad will come to pass? Or does she do everything in her power to survive?

I was really surprised by this one, I think I received it as a freebie from an email and the cover caught my eye so I downloaded it quick snap. I don't know why I always have low expectations of the books that I receive from these freebie emails, but I just do for some reason. In a way, I find that it's probably a good thing, it means that I'm going into these stories with average expectations and constantly being blown out of the water by how great they turn out to be. This one was no exception.

The story line itself is definitely intriguing. Scarlet is only sixteen years old, in a way, it kinda reminds me of season one of Buffy, the last episode where Giles tells her that she will go against the master, and she will die. This is what kept flying through my head while reading this. Of course, this story isn't anything like Buffy to be honest. Scarlet is just a normal girl who through no actions of her own, has been put in this awful situation where she is a tool that will be used to essentially bring about the end of humanity. So I can't help but immediately feel for her. She did nothing at all to deserve any of this, all she did was exist, and through no want of her own. So the story is pretty compelling, to me anyway, this poor girl is just trying to do her best. She lives with an absent father who spends more time at work than with his own daughter, and she's just going through the motions, having made no friends in her time in this new town, besides Mr. Chester and the other employee - Indy.

I found this to be a very character driven story, as I said, the reader instantly feels for the protagonist Scarlet, Sorrow - the first man found by the lake also made me feel for him. He knows that he has a purpose, and that he just wants to protect that which is innocent, yet remembers nothing. The Saint brings to mind good old Arnie as the Terminator. He's unrelenting and will follow and carry out his mission no matter what. He doesn't seem to have emotions and I instantly hated and feared him. I've always had a small fear of the terminator, never stop, never die, type characters, if you can't kill them, what else can you do honestly?

The story was very fast paced and was full of action from the word go. I'm not 100% sure if there is a follow up story to this one, but I kinda hope there is or will be eventually. I'm interested to see where Scarlet's story goes from here, as it's left open ended enough for there to be a follow up. I'm also interested in the continuation of Mr. Chester's story. He became an interesting character with a full back story. I'm left intrigued and wanting more which to me, is a great advertisement for a story. This is a story of good VS evil where the lines are blurred, who really is good? And are the 'bad guys' really that bad? It goes to show that nothing is ever quite black or white, but varying shades of grey.

Wings of Sorrow took me by surprise.
Again, it's centred around the town of Redlake and Wright comes up with another fun read... But I wasn't expecting this to be a YA novel - if it's not it certainly reads like one. (Admittedly I haven't read one as such, but the feel of the story and the storytelling just seems to fit that market).
Redlake seems to be an interesting place, but this book (as fun as it was to read) seems to muddle the overall narrative arc for this shared world. I'm all up for changing tones, different directions, this just seemed Wright "lite", but I enjoy Wright's stuff and prefer it full strength.
It's not a bad book by any means, and has an interesting idea (although perhaps it needs to distance itself a little more from Buffy to stand on its own), I just feel I wasn't the type of reader Wright was aiming this at.
It's a fun adventure, and I'm sure it'll please lots of people it's geared towards, it just didn't really connect with me.

MY REVIEW:
I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The cover of this book is absolutely stunning. One of the nicest I've seen in awhile, and in paperback, it's exceptionally beautiful.

I liked the characters in this book. I felt they were the best part of the story. They grip you right from the start, and they make you want to keep reading. That being said, I don't really think this book was for me. I felt like it read a little too quickly for me, almost rushed, and there was a plot hole I couldn't get out of my head once I spotted it. Perhaps, I am just too far beyond the age bracket to enjoy this story.

I do think that Wright writes well, though. Like I said, his characters are great, and the concept of the story is extremely intriguing. I'm actually quite disappointed I didn't enjoy this story more because I am curious what the future installments of this story will entail.

There is quite a bit of violence in this novel, so if that bothers you (it doesn't bother me), you might want to be aware of that. (Why would you be reading horror if does, though, I wonder?)

Iain Rob Wright has a large body of work, and I have several of them that have been waiting for me to devour on my Kindle once my #yearofindiewomen concludes, so I look forward to reading them. Just because this book wasn't 100% for me doesn't mean I won't absolutely love something else he's written.

If you're a fan of YA horror, especially stuff that is supernaturally oriented with an anti-hero protagonist, you should pick this up. It will probably be right up your alley.

For Iain's latest offering we return to Redlake. A town that readers of Wright's books will already be aware of. Let me just start by saying that at first, I was unsure whether this story would be my cup of tea. By the end of the book I was totally blown away.

We follow the story of sixteen year old Scarlet Thomas. Scarlet lives with her father, a single parent, following her mother walking out on her own family mysteriously some ten years previous.

They had relocated to Redlake following her dad losing his previous job in their hometown of Moseley. His insecurities in his new job had subsequently led to him becoming a workaholic, his love for his child unquestionable, but his need to provide for her greater than the time that they spent together.

Since moving to Redlake, Scarlet hadn't made many friends. Her social circle mainly consisted of her boss Mr Chester and her colleague Indy where she worked in the Little Treasures Emporium. A shop on the High Street that sold rare books and artefacts. Scarlet had once taken liking to a necklace, that her employer had sold to her with an agreement that payment would be deducted from her wages in instalments.

On her way home from work one evening, Scarlet walks down by the lake and helps and finds a man on the banks; Alone, confused, naked.

This sparks the beginning of an unlikely companionship with the man that she names 'Sorrow.' As the story unfolds, Sorrow proclaims that he has been sent to protect Scarlet.

Not to give too much away with this, the story will contain demons, witches and a secret society called the White Order. As Scarlet's powers awaken, It unfolds nicely. Why did Scarlet's mother really disappear? Who is the real Mister Chester?

The story swerves and twists right up to the finale where Scarlet has to make the ultimate decision to sacrifice one life in exchange for many.

I would have this down as a crossover between supernatural horror and fantasy. Something that I was unsure about at first, but thoroughly enjoyed.

I've read a few of this author's other books and this is definitely different to his other works but just as good.

Scarlet Thomas and her dad move to Redlake for his work and because it's a new one, her dad is working all hours. Scarlet has no friends yet but has a job in a book store, which she enjoys. While walking home one evening by the lake, she comes across a naked man who seems to have lost his memory. For some reason she takes him home but he disappears when her dad comes home. Next day she is again walking near the lake when a stranger approaches, he calls her the spark and says she needs to be destroyed. His touch burns her but the man from the night before suddenly appears and saves her. She runs to the book shop and what is revealed will change her life forever.

This was such a unique book and one I devoured. I pretty much everything about it. Characters: Loved Scarlet, she is a strong girl but also just looking to be safe and loved. Sorrow, it's the name Scarlet gives him because he can't remember his own. He is there to keep Scarlet safe and takes his job seriously! He is a mysterious enigmatic character and I need to know more!! Then we have the "bad" guy. Gosh this dude is like the terminator cause he kept coming back and was nearly invincible! So cool!! ;) All of these were well written and developed and easily likable.

In all, this was an action packed, unique and gripping book. I am totally invested in these characters and need to know more, I need to see what happens Scarlet and Sorrow and just what is up with her mother?? In other words, I need book 2 now!!!!

Nigel Patterson, what can I say!! He has such an easy voice to listen to and made for an amazing Sorrow!! He even had a good female voice. He really brought this story to life and I hope he narrates the next.

*I received a copy of this for review. This in no way affected my thoughts.*

I really enjoyed reading this book :-) I'm all about the angel books. I hope there's a sequel. I was left wanting more. I want to know what happens to our characters, I know there's more there has to be.

I thought it was a cute short story, even though it did take me a bit to finish, I'm in a book slump okay :( :( okay I lied I didn't read this book, I listened to the audio book, it was all liiiieeees, I'm sorry :'( :'( The audio book was told with a British accent, I really liked it and got used to it. There were some funny moments, I enjoyed hearing it instead of reading it, specially cus I'm in a slump, I think it helps listening to books. Any who.

Scarlet was a quiet girl, used to taking care of herself and her dad. She kept to herself, only had one friend who kind of had a crush on her. I liked reading about Scarlet, she seemed relatable, the whole thing about taking a naked stranger to yours house is questionable though. I was like " girl, what are you doing". She went from being a regular girl to having her world turn upside down. There's more to her than she knows. She's not just a girl.

Sorrow was a great character :-) He didn't know who he was, where he was. Once he meets Scarlet he makes it his mission to take care of her and protect her from a crazy heartless angel. Sorrow was kind of serious and robotic but I liked him. He showed concern for Scarlet and he always showed up when she needed him. But I don't know how I feel about them being together. I totally want them too cus I love me some romance but I feel he's a bit old for her. She's 16 and he's suppose to be middle twenties. Maybe if she was a bit older.

This book was entertaining, it did have violent moments. Didn't expect those gruesome scenes. But I really enjoyed reading this book, I hope there's more to Scarlet and Sorrow :-) :-)

Full disclosure, I was provided with a free copy by the author in exchange for an honest review.

As far as Iain Rob Wright as an author goes, I must also say that I am a fan. I read Seasick (for the first time) a few years back and have been hooked ever since. His newest offering is quite the departure from his previous works, but definitely worth the read!

This is a YA Adventure of Scarlet, a 16 year old girl who recently moved to a new town with no friends to speak of, a dad who loves her and a mom who... well isn't there. She happens upon a naked stranger by the lake on the way home from work one day and in an instant her life changes. As it turns out, the stranger was sent to protect her since she is destined to bring on the end of the world.

In this not so classic tale of Good v. Evil the battle lines are drawn and definitely blurred. On one side there is the Saint... sent to stop the Scarlet from becoming the Spark and ushering in the end of time. On the other side, there is Sorrow... a demon who's only mission is to protect Scarlet.Good v. Evil. Easy, right? Or is it?

Enter the White Order..a secret society and things really get weird. Add in a perverted co-worker, and an employer who knows a tad more than he lets on and you've got all the makings for the start of a great adventure.

This book definitely was over too soon and I am on pins an needles waiting for the next instalment. I trust you will be too.

Not very experienced at writing reviews but as I received this book from the author to read and point out typos etc before publishing I feel I should attempt to write a review
The book focuses on a young girl caught up in a battle between good and evil and magic. I found it easy to read and it held my attention. I managed to read the book in 24 hours.. (No easy task when you work 36 hours and have 3 children) and I enjoyed the read.
I have read other people's reviews on books I was enjoying and it has put me off reading them so I am not going to wax lyrical and rant. The book appears to be written more for a young adult audience. I have a 13 year old girl who I would allow to read this book.
It has themes of the obvious good vs evil and challenges the perspective of what classified as good and evil. Single parent families, mother abandonment, relationships and finding friendships in unusual circumstances. There is violence in the book but not graphic in the slightest and it is essential to the plot line
I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 as I very rarely give a book 5 stars.. To obtain this level from me it has to be a book with an exceptional and unique plotline. To me 5 stars indicates I will never read anything better and I am 36 so hopefully I will be reading a lot more books in my lifetime
I am a big fan on Iain Rob Wright and I am looking forward to the sequel to this book. Keep up the good work Iain

I just finished reading Wings of Sorrow by Iain Rob Wright. This author is new to me as well as getting back to reading fantasy/horror/suspense novels. Forgot how the really good ones could scare the bejeezus out of me. This one is really good! I have always maintained that anyone can write "fantasy" novels, but a good writer can make you believe what he has written. When I started reading this book, I was sitting on the couch in my living room. As I progressed further into the book, I found myself standing in The Little Treasures Emporium nestled beside a small lake in a picturesque hamlet somewhere in England. While being invisible to the characters around me, I was trying to protect young Scarlet Thomas from an evil demon neither of us knew anything about. From then on every action performed culminated into the ultimate battle of good versus evil. But, there were moments when the lines between the two were blurred. Very blurred.
This book turned out to be an enjoyable escape, with smatterings of comedy, from a dreary, rainy day. (I especially liked the reference to Top Gear - an all time favorite BBC import for this Texas girl from The USA.) An escape that I wouldn't mind undergoing again in another one of I. R. Wright's delectable novels.

Wings of Sorrow by Iain Rob Wright is a story about love. And not in the romantic sense.
I think this story has to do with the love Scarlet has for her father.
It's a novel about being a teenager, with no friends and with the burden of being abandoned by her mother.
As if this wasn't enough, one day she has a strange encounter with a man whose sole purpose is to keep her safe... from the forces of light. Not long after this encounter, the person sent to eliminate Scarlet finds her and the persecution begins.
This person has come to stop her from becoming the bringer of the a world. A world full of magical beings and magic in everything.
For some reason, this is bad. The explanation given in the dialogue is that the human race couldn't thrive in a magical environment.
The story flows gracefully, I never felt I was stranded. The action is well presented, I could see in my mind the scene taking place.
I think some of the important characters were not fully developed, I sensed it was a little unfair for some.
Wings of Sorrow is a great book. I know the author writes mainly horror stories, but I would say this one is not horror, like I stated at the beginning, it's a story about love.
Highly recommended.

Scarlett is a 16 year old girl, living with her single father. She is a loner, and her father is clueless how to deal with a teen girl. As she walks home from school one day, she comes across a naked man by the shores of the lake in town. So starts an adventure Scarlet could never have imagined. An angel, for lack of a better term, is hunting her because she has forbidden power, even if she doesnt know it. The naked man, who Scarlet names Sorrow, is actually a "demon" sent to protect her and make sure she survives. What follows is a harrowing race against time, with a secret society with ulterior motives, magic, an maniacal "good" guy trying to kill Scarlet, and a climactic finale that will leave the reader satisfied, but waiting for the next installment.

The characters are well written, with snappy dialogue and a plot that has some interesting twists and turns. No one is who they seem, and there are surprises aplenty.

Nigel Patterson does his usual excellent job narrating, handling all the variations of British, Welsh and Scottish accents with a deft touch, and keeping the narrative flowing with grace and character.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

When I read the book summary, I was really put off. I thought 'Oh no, not another Twilight thingy'. I expected a horrible teenage story with lots of romance and little creativity. I WAS SO WRONG!
Basically, the story is about a teenager who finds out that she is 'The Spark', a magical being who will someday destroy the world (a bit like Hellboy but without the horns ;)
Consequently, she is pursued by an angel-like being who tries to kill her. Of course, this needs to be averted, so the 'devil' sends his greatest demon to protect her. So Scarlet starts her journey to cheat fate and somehow survive this adventure.
I enjoyed the story more than I expected. Scarlet is a likeable character and not as naive as you would think. Sorrow reminded me a lot of Clovenhoof (the devil who is exiled to earth for bad behaviour), but brought a nice twist to the plot.
I honestly have to say that the novel is a good start to a new series and not only teenagers will like them. It is like reading a mixture of Hellboy, Constantine and Clovenhoof. Definitely worth reading.

This novella sneaks up on you. It starts with an interesting premise and great characters, and then it keeps getting more exciting until suddenly it grabs you and won’t let go. Every time I had to go do something and couldn’t read, I got so annoyed. I desperately wanted to know what was going to happen to Scarlet and Sorrow next.

And the villain—wow, what a frightening and vivid character! Kind of a cross between the Terminator and an archangel. And it’s that striking conflict that makes this novella so special. The standard good guys versus bad guys is switched around. You never stop rooting for Scarlet and Sorrow, but you’re not completely sure that they won’t turn out to be the bringers-of-doom they’re “destined” to be. The author has cleverly flipped the sides of good and evil until you don’t know what to expect next.

With dynamic characters, a rocket-fire pace, and plenty of twists, this novella has made me into a big fan. I can’t wait for more in the series! Very highly recommended!

Not What I Expected, But A Good Read Nonetheless

Wings of Sorrow was my introduction to Mr. Wright's work. While I'm not a "Young Adult" by a long shot I really enjoyed the story as my taste in literature leans toward sci-fi , fantasy, and horror for the most part.

What I mean by not what I expected was that I hadn't expected the book to be geared toward the YA audience as I had glossed over the spoiler notes in the beginning and plunged right in. That, however, did little to deter me from devouring the book in one sitting. The story is well developed and the characters are "believable" enough given that the book is fantasy/horror. I especially enjoyed how Mr. Wright teased me along with subtle bits about Scarlet's mother and then ultimately revealed that she, Nesta, has other plans for her young daughter....

This is a different way to look at a fantasy world than any other I have read. It kept me up until 5am. I had to finish it because when I tried to go to sleep I kept trying to guess what might happen in the next chapter.

Sorry I can't leave any details because I don't want to spoil it for you. Three things I think you need to know though: 1-there is violence in this book, in case this is a decision maker for you 2-I received this book as a gift from the author but a review was not required and did not stop me from enjoying the read 3-You can get this book and others in a starter kit by just going to his website and signing up for his newsletter. Best deal I've gotten in years. Hope you like it as much as I have.

ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!
Let me begin by saying I received this as an ARC from the author and I am so glad I did. I could not put this book down and now that I am finished I want more. PLEASE write another!?!
The characters of Scarlett and Sorrow are so well written you will fall in love with them. And Sorrow is a demon. A lovable, dorky, hard fighting, lost memory demon. The plot is fantastic and keeps you glued to the pages. It's your basic good vs evil but the good is ruthless and the bad is actually an innocent. Muddy waters there.
If you want a fast paced thriller, horror, love story be sure to buy this. I just bought another copy to send a friend.

Not your ordinary teenager

Iain has done it again folks!! Each book I read gets better.
Scarlet Thomas is not your ordinary teenager. These coming of age times are supposed to be delightful, exciting. For her, with a tremendous duty, and demons watching her every move, I would say this is her most dreadful time.
This will keep you on the edge of your seat. Never a dull moment in this household.

A teen girl who finds out the hard way that she's not quite who she thought she was.
Fast paced and descriptive, very gory in places too. The story had me gripped from the beginning, with no clues as to how it would all pan out in the end.
Multidimensional characters that are not quite what they are expected to be, I enjoyed reading about them all.
I hope there will be a sequel to answer the questions we are left with.
*This was an ARC. My views are my own.*
