4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 166 ratings

U.S. Marshal Lucas Graham had been assigned to look into the deaths of several gold miners in Havilah, California.

Though the job is routine, delivering the news to the murder victim’s proxy bride that her husband is dead is not. Neither is the growing attraction he feels for her as he tries to find out the truth of what happened to her husband.

Sadie Steele is running from the law straight into the arms of her childhood best friend, Sam Clayton. The only problem, when she arrives to start her new life with him, a Marshal informs her that he’s been murdered. With nothing to return to, Sadie stays to run her husband’s claim while she waits for the Marshal to avenge her husband’s death.

Will Lucas figure out what’s really going on in time to protect Sadie? Can Sadie find a way to make room in heart for a lawman? And what will happen when danger from the past and present collide?

I enjoyed this story that is part of a series, A US Marshall Lawkeeper Romance, by a group of talented authors. Each story in the series will read as a stand-alone and can be read in any order. The stories will all feature law enforcement heroes and the women who love them. The stories are sweet, clean based stories where the lawman finds his woman. Each will read as a stand-alone book. While this story has Christian elements, it is not preachy.

The story begins in Little Rock, Arkansas and will pick up in Havilah, Californa in 1866. After losing both parents, Sadie Steele is placed in an orphanage where she will meet Sam Clayton. Sam will leave and make his way west to California and the gold fields, staking a claim. Once Sadie leaves the orphanage, she will try making a living as a seamstress, but then the shop owner will accuse her of theft when money comes missing. She will leave for another town and contact Sam, who will make arrangements for marriage by proxy and send for her.

What a shock to arrive in town and to be met at the stage by a US Marshall—has her former employer found her and is she to be arrested? But Lucas Graham will have the bitter news to share that Sam was murdered and she is now a widow. While her marriage to Sam wasn’t out of love but necessity, she is still in shock and wants to see justice for this senseless act, especially when she learns he is one of three men murdered and robbed.

The story will have Sadie confused by her feelings when she is around Lucas, but she isn’t the only one. Lucas wants to protect her while doing his job. What will it take to solve the crimes and to keep Sadie safe? Will the culprits be caught before another life is lost? When Lucas solves the crime, what will become of his position with the US Marshall service?

“She realized she was falling for the handsome lawman, and she wasn’t sure how to navigate such unfamiliar waters.”

The story will have the good, the bad, and the ugly of people—with greed leading to theft and murder. It will have Sadie and Lucas falling in love but still unsure about each other and how to proceed. Is this to be a marriage of convenience or will love win? What will happen when Sadie’s past catches up with her? How will Lucas react to the story Sadie tells him and can he believe her? Is leaving Lucas and returning to Little Rock the only way to keep him safe?

The story is a sweet, clean romance between Lucas and Sadie. He doesn’t push, and he respects her for the strong and courageous woman she wants to be, trying to carry on the legacy that her friend and late husband, Sam Clayton, began. The story is a quick but satisfying addition to The Lawkeepers series.

Sadie and Sam friends from being in an orphanage. When trouble happened and she was forced to leave. Sam sent money for her to come, by proxy they were married. Traveling alone by stagecoach with mishaps and hunger. Upon arriving from the Marshall she learned of his murder, he had a successful mining claim. and the fourth one killed before banking a large deposit at the bank.A story that shows the courage to carry out his legacy of someone she knew and married in name. Her feeling for Lucas was something else, and they spent time together and finding those that were doing the killing. Each a stand alone about the days in the 1860’s.

What happens when you arrive and your husband by proxy has been killed? Well Sadie is not one to give up. She intends to take over her husbands mine and work it. But there are problems that soon arise. She finds herself in the middle of trouble. But Lucas is a US Marshall investigating the murder and he takes a shine to Sadie. She didn’t count on this handsome man to help her. Oh, now how does she deal with him? This is a delightful story about making the best of a situation, and not being too proud to ask for help. You will love how these two com to be more than strangers.

Sadie shows up in town to find out her husband has been murdered. Lucas the Marshall is determined to find who’s behind the string of murders and robberies. He’s also determined to protect Sadie. This is a short book and I would have liked a little more depth in the characters and getting more deeply into the situation.

Sadie Steele was raised in an orphanage after her parents were died. While she's there she becomes good friends with Sam Clayton. When he left the orphanage, he moved to Havilah, California to become a miner. Later he proposed marriage to Sadie and and they were married by proxy. He sent her money to come West so she could join him. While Sadie is on her way to join her husband, he is killed, and somebody stole her money on the trip, leaving her with no money to buy food. When she arrives in Havilah, she is met by U.S. Marshal Lucas Graham, who is investigating the death deaths of several miners, including Sadie's husband. During his investigation Lucas falls for the beautiful young widow. Can Lucas solve the murders? Will Sadie and Lucas be able to admit their love love for each other, before other miners are killed?

I really enjoyed this book. It is not long so if you don't have a lot of time to read, this is a nice, clean, enjoyable story. Well written, good characters and, of course, a sweet love story!

I like how the whole story and mystery play out. Sadie is one tough cookie. Her determination is admirable. I like how she then considers what she really wants, and gets it. A good ending.

This story was a pleasant, quick read for me. I liked the characters and the interesting storyline, although I wished Sadie and Lucas' relationship was developed more. It felt too... quick for my liking.
