most whiney lead character ever

with power, money and influence.... the lead character over came it all...

Pushing aside survives guilt. That feeling of not being good enough. Of not having sacrificed enough. Being more in touch with my feelings I think some things will be there forever

and he over came Canadian racism... wow

The author has run dry.

The same old, same old. No new ideas, concepts or plot twists. Development of the characters has stopped, and the authors insecurities are now becoming the driving theme for the story.

Boring, Choppy Base Building...

I love books 1-4. I love Nick Podehl. I love Tao Wong.

However, with this book he's fallen into the trap every LitRPG author seems to fall into. My arch nemesis: Base Building.

It began in book 4 and extends over to Coast on Fire as well. Additionally, our MC is basically playing a side role in this book. He's letting the U.S. Government dictate where he goes and what he does. This is not why we fell in love with the previous books. We fell in love with the gruff rogue wolf who can tackle any obstacle in his path, with one of those obstacles learning to control his anger and learn to work with others.

However, in Coast on Fire the anger is controlled a bit too much. He is no longer the MC, rather just a "Glorified Magic Bus" who get's little to no credit for what he does. I've still got 3 hours left and maybe I'll change my rating, but so far I'm putting this book aside and finishing it later.

Slow, boring meetings, superfluous details, cities we don't care about full of ungrateful people, and frankly full of overarching boring. A few token dungeons, but nothing particularly interesting. Scenes bounce from place to place with no ceremony, just letting you figure out what's happening, and by the time you figure it out and are uninterested with your findings, the scene changes again. Seems to have very little direction at this point, as if the author has run out of inspiration for where to take things. Hopefully book 6 will fix these issues.

Make up your mind

Okay we get it....every white person in his books are racist (unless it’s white women who he’s trying to bang). I get that he’s pandering to our current culture but he forgets to pander to all PC culture. For instance....every white person in his books are racist...okay fine pander away it’s an easy target now a days...but your forgetting to pander to the feminists when every female character has Luscious breasts, amazing bodies and are over sexualized. Just please try to keep on track on which PC groups you’re trying to cater to in your next books please I can’t take the hypocrisy much more.

The story was good but the author seems impatient

The story was good and the narration was outstanding but the author seems to share the MCs impatience. There are several jumps in hours, days, and weeks during battles, negotiation, dungeon dives and traveling. it's not that its important information being left out. it's more that the jumps are during times of detailed descriptions and then suddenly you jump and after a few of the bigger jumps, you get the feeling that the author is eager to "move the story along." This is a personal thing so not everyone will have a issue with it. I just found that it pulled me out of the imagery that the author was presenting at the time. Other than that, it was another great addition to the series.

Advances the Story

I received a free review copy.

I enjoyed the book and look forward to continuing to listen to the series.

In this book, John and company deal with various issues caused by the system apocalypse as they work to unite human and alien allies to drive back evil, both alien and human. John is able to advance in skills and knowledge as he becomes a critical asset in freeing the oppressed. Also, he and Lana continue their relationship. This one is a little more sweeping in scope that earlier books as armies are led in battle and summarizes more than earlier books.

Finally he's not a total raging jerk.

It has been a long time in waiting but our MC is no longer a raging jerk that just goes around yelling at people, being a total shut in, and killing things. The end of this book though has me super excited for the continuation of this book series.
