The Priestess and The Vampire: a mortal and vampire romance (Vampire Addictions Book 1) Kindle Edition
Jade just got dumped by the fiancé she trusted, a man who has been cheating on her. But she's a survivor. She'll get through the ache of feeling like a fool, even if it means accepting a date with a hot stranger to a fancy costume party at his boss's sprawling mansion.
Dressing as a sexy voodoo priestess might help her fake confidence as she meets Draculas and supernatural creatures of all sorts, but it does nothing to protect her from being set up by her date to be a real vampire's next victim.
When the smoking hot billionaire disguised as a marauding Viking tears her away from her rabid attacker's grasp, it's almost too late. Forced to recover in his mansion from an assault that nearly kills her, the brooding Viking demands to know if she wants to die quickly or live a life of bondage, enthralled to the mythically original vampire obsessed with her blood.
But salvaging enough self-esteem to prove she's worth living is just one small feat she needs to accomplish in the ruthless world she finds herself in. And navigating her newly awakened feelings for a man she knows isn't human isn't her only problem.
Because that costume she rented also came with a curse, and if she can't undo it, she might lose more than just a little blood…she might lose her soul.
Fans of Sarah Piper or Kelly St. Clare who love vampire romance fiction will enjoy the twists and turns of this darkly romantic series.

About the author
Thea is a NEW YORK TIMES and USA TODAY Bestselling Author who writes action-packed urban fantasy with dark themes. She used to have a black lab at her feet when she wrote, warming up the calves. Now it's just a cuppa tea keeping her warm.
Whether she's finding ways to lure Isabella Hush into the Shadow Bazaar or throwing the switch on a new monster, her characters are usually deeply wounded individuals struggling for redemption. The romance is slow-burn but worth it, and the humor just might have a touch of Canadiana.
She's a huge fan of Patricia Briggs and Laurel K Hamilton and hopes you'll enjoy slipping into the skin of the characters she's created.

a special shout out to Brenda Levy Tate for the awesome author photo wherein I don't look too dog-lady crazy.

I found both H/h unlikeable and with no redeeming qualities. Maybe if the author had given more information about these characters, rather than just creating superficial ones, I would have felt differently. There is even a scene in the last Chapter where Magnus is telling Jade that he will "tell you all that I am. What I am, began with Gio". And then tells her about how Gio was made and says nothing about who or what he was/is. There are of course inferences, but nothing concrete. It is just plain disappointing. Jade's distrust is never really explained as being long term, ingrained or just the result of her recently being "dumped" by her boyfriend.
Having been so long since I first read it, I was definitely reading with new eyes. While the story was compelling, I strongly recommend the author fire her editor. This wasn't just a case of occasional errors with words missing or inserted in the wrong place, it was throughout the book and so egregious that it pulled you from the moment by having to go back to the sentence over and over to figure out what being said.
With this, I am sad to say, I truly felt in wasn't worth my time and am glad I didn't spend any $$.
Like I said, I have the 2018 version of this book, but received and ARC through Booksprout and am freely providing this review.

I am really torn about how to review this book. First, it's a vampire story. Second, it's not a romance even though it sort of is a romance but it definitely urban fantasy. Third, it's not a finished story in that this part of the story is done but there is clearly more coming. Finally, I can see where the author is going but it needed something more because one of the characters does and says some things that are creepy and pushy and there's no explanation beyond the common romance trope of "you are the one". Did I enjoy it? Yes. Did I sometimes scratch my head and wonder what the heck I was reading? Yes. Did I like the heroine? Yes. Did I think the bad guy fit the story well? That's tough because there is more than one bad guy but yes.
Jade has just broken up with her boyfriend. When she meets a hot man at a coffee shop, she agrees to go out with him on Halloween to regain her mojo. That decision completely changes the trajectory of Jade's life. It turns out that New Orleans has a very active group of paranormal creatures that live there and with that an active market for fresh human blood. At the end of this story, Jade has been forced to come to terms with some pretty jarring revelations, for example, vampires exist and they feed on humans. The way she keeps moving forward and trying to get away from the fate that was thrust upon her was really good. I was rooting for her to come out the other side (spoiler alert: she doesn't). I'm not going to detail the other characters in the story because the story is really about Jade and her discoveries. Also, if I start listing characters then it would give away part of the story that I think is interesting.
What didn't I like about the story? There is a character that is not well-rounded so some of the character's actions don't make sense. Put another way, whiplash. At the conclusion of the story, I decided that the author was doing it on purpose because that will be explored in a later book.
This story is set in New Orleans. I will read more books from this author in the future.
