A Good Horror / Thriller Story With Quick Pacing

I really enjoyed the audiobook for "Escape!", which I listened to during my work commute over a week. The premise is that seven co-workers head out for a weekend escape room team-building adventure, which is supposed to last only 90 minutes. Among the seven is Cheryl, the main character and newbie of the group, having only worked at the company for a few months.

The story moves along at a slow pace until the seven find themselves trapped in an underground escape room they are forced to solve. Oh yeah, it's all put together by someone hell bent on revenge against the more established employees, with Cheryl caught in the middle. As the story progresses, there are tests presented, giving members of the group a chance to atone, with deadly consequences should they not.

I really enjoyed the story and thought it moved along at a steady pace once it reached the horror aspect of the story. You can't really blame it for starting slowly because the progression from casual-team-building-weekend to fight-for-their-lives is necessary. It's all wrapped up with a neat bow at the end. I wasn't particularly happy with how it ended, but that's fine, I don't have to be happy. It just has to make sense, and it does. Kudos to Iain Rob Wright for a well-crafted story.

I had not listened to anything narrated by Aubrey Parsons before, so I didn't know what to expect. My only negative with his narration is that female voices were a little pitchy, which, when combined with a British accent, reminded me of female characters from Monty Python skits and movies. It did pull me out of the story at times, not because of a comical aspect, but because of the voice itself. Otherwise, I thought Parsons did a great job with varying the male voices, and his prose narration was solid and emotive.

Give this book a listen. You'll be glad you did.

A wild, fast paced ride reminiscent of Saw...

Escape! by Iain Rob Wright was such a fun listen and it really moved along at a great pace. On a work retreat, a group of people get trapped in an escape room type setting in a remote area. Only this is no ordinary escape room and this particular group has a few secrets that they're hiding...I don't want to reveal any spoilers, but it's a good listen. There's violence, language, suspense, twists...everything you're likely expecting already. Although I guessed what the big twist was prior to it being revealed, I think it was just luck. I could easily see this being made into a movie, as the plot was well thought out and the story holds your interest quite well.

Aubrey Parsons did a really great job narrating Escape! He had unique voices for the characters and I could easily tell which person was talking at any given moment with the unique voices that his narration lent to the cast. I'd definitely listen and actively look for more narrations by Mr. Parsons. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher for an honest review.

Loved this one!

I absolutely loved this one! How it all came together, the narrators voice, and the overall arching story line. This might have to be a must own for me. Can’t wait to see what comes next in the series!

It's Saw.

Considering the premise and plot are a Saw movie script or novelization, I'm very impressed I enjoyed it as much as I did. A big part of that is the narration of course, but the characters are extremely engaging as well. It did get a bit predictable (yet still sort of ridiculous at the same time) at points, and the hilarious [plot element I don't want to ruin, but basically the 'how'] made it impossible to take seriously. Now that I think about it, just masking the glaring deficits in the plot is a real accomplishment and while it has little substance, is a testament to the author's style! As long as you're down with SAW, it's worth a listen

Gory!!

I don't mind the gore! I knew this was horrorish when diving in. I love me a good freaky book. I really like the plot of this one and the development. There was a few phrases that made me roll my eyes, like I'm going to "mash you up". Mash you up was said a lot. I listen to books written by authors all around the world so I know some phrases are popular where others aren't. So the storyline was decent. I finished it in only a day so I must have enjoyed it!

The narration wasn't my favorite. I would have preferred if the narrator didn't alter his voice for various characters. Some of them sounded plain awful. However, when he just read the story it was fine and didn't interfere with my enjoyment. If I'm stopping and paying specific attention to the narration, it's either out of this world or it needs work. This one needs work. However, not enough to make me avoid the narrator in the future but I don't believe I'll be seeking him out either.

Wow!

This story a was amazing. It was scary and tense. A young woman accidentally finds herself trapped in the middle of a revenge plot. The characters are so realistic you can almost see them. The narrator really brings them to life. You won't want to miss this one.

Just Wow!!!

The plot of this thriller keeps you guessing until the end. Some of it was easy to figure out, but ultimately the conclusion was a great twist. The characters, typical of Mr. Wright, are people you kind of know in your life. They are very believable and relatable. I have read numerous books by IAW, and have never yet been disappointed.

The narrator of this audiobook was a good performer. At first I wasn't sure about the voices he chose for the characters, but in the end, he won me over. His pacing was excellent and at no point did I find it uninteresting.

Awesome horror novel that will consume you

This was a great thriller and had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. A group of work colleagues do an escape room as part of team building work function set up by their boss, or so they think. Our main character, Cheryl, wasn't supposed to originally go on the activity. But the girl who was originally invited asked her to take her spot. What Cheryl thinks is her getting out and doing something different then worrying about her widowed mother turns into the scariest experience of her life. This escape room isn't like the fun ones that are so popular. This one has a sinister edge and whoever is running it knows the sins of the people originally invited. Cheryl, an innocent victim, has to help people she has never been fond of in the first place while learning deadly secrets that put her and all their lives in danger. This was such a great premise for a horror novel. And I say horror because it had me scared on what was going to happen next. And I did not see so many of twists and turns coming, especially the ending. And this book left it open for more and I definitely want to know what happens next. This narrator did a great job expressing the suspense of this novel. This book was written with UK lingo and I am in the US. So I picked up a few new words that are now part of my vocabulary. That's how into this story I got. Thriller fans, this is the book to read/listen. Just warning, it will consume you until the end and even after.

Good Read. Worth the Purchase.

This was a good read. It is worth purchasing. The narrator was excellent. The story keeps you intrigued. I am not from the UK, so some of the conversational language was confusing, but I grasped the gist, most of the time. There were a few times where the conversations should have been shortened and the story needed to move on, but only enough to note. I plan to take a look at some of his other titles.
